The Week Ahead

4:51PM

As was mentioned yesterday, the week ahead will not feature a great deal of weather, in terms of storminess, but will be remembered for its swings in temperature.

A cold front will move through southern New England tonight, setting us up for a couple chilly days to start the new week Monday and Tuesday. Monday will feature bright sun but it may have to share the sky with some fair weather clouds.  A low pressure wave exiting the Mid Atlantic Coast will pass well east of New England Monday night and early Tuesday. Warm air will already be on the return above us later Tuesday, and this may result in some increase in high to mid level cloud cover during the day.

By midweek (Wednesday-Thursday) high pressure moving offshore will create a warmer southwesterly wind flow and temperatures will respond quickly. Expect many areas to be over 50 Wednesday and over 60 Thursday, along with fair weather!

A cold front and wave of low pressure will bring unsettled weather on Friday, then a drier, cooler weekend is expected. There are some questions as to how quickly the front late in the week will move offshore, so that Saturday’s forecast is somewhat uncertain. Going with the drier scenario for now.

Also, next weekend is the weekend to change the clocks and move them forward one hour on Saturday night (or 2AM Sunday morning, which becomes 3AM, as Daylight Savings Time begins).

Forecast for Boston area, eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

  1. Thanks TK ! Looking forward to some sun, thinking the first 4 days of the month have seen < 20% of the possible sunshine….or so it seems.

  2. Thanks TK. Exciting month in our house. Oldest is due to have her second little girl in 2-3 weeks. We are getting very excited

  3. Looks like a couple of seasonably cold days ahead. Wish we could get that storm to come closer to SNE. Such a waste of late season cold air.

  4. I’m wondering if I didn’t progress things fast enough at the end of the week. On one hand I worry about the front late week having trouble getting out of here on Saturday but there are also indications that things could move along swiftly in a split jet stream flow that next Sunday is much warmer than what I have there. Well, at least it’s just day 7 right now.

  5. On Chanel seven weather blog tonight It said after a cool down on Friday temps should rebound into the 50s and 60s for the weekend.

    1. If things are a little more progressive, for sure, Friday will be cooler than I have, and Sunday will be warmer than I have now.

    1. Yes. But that doesn’t mean the snow threats are completely gone.

You just cannot rule them out, climatologically, with uncertainty in the day to day weather beyond several days, even knowing the overall pattern.

April 28-29 1987 comes to mind.

      April 6 1982.

      March 31-April 1 1997.

      March 13 1993.

      March 29 1984.

      May 9-10 1977.

May 18 2002 (1/2 inch of snow here).

      The list goes on.

      1. Now snow in may is just not right. BA humbug. Snowing with shorts on, I would not like that. I dont know if I can say It wont snow, but I hope not. I am ready for the next season. They took down the towns outdoor rink yesterday. First year for it. It got used once on mlk day, what a shame because that was a fun day. Time for bed, goodnight.

      2. I remember the April 6 1982 storm. Was living on Beacon Hill at the time and it was a nasty cold storm. Opening Day at Fenway was delayed a couple of days due to the snow. IIRC it was all gone in 4 or 5 days.

Also remember the March 29 1984 storm. I was working in an office building on Russia Wharf (Congress Street). A house boat (that was being used for office space) was docked right next to our building and it sank during the storm. Also the barge that was next to the Tea Party ship broke its lines for a short time.

Finally the May 1977 storm left very little in the city but I remember traveling home to West Roxbury where I lived and there were several inches on the ground.

        1. The 4-6-1982 storm was on a Tuesday. The following Sunday was Easter and I remember all the snow being gone by then.

The 3-29-1984 storm was violent. The winds were insane. Sustained winds held me up as I leaned into them. That storm was noteable for how quickly a foot of snow fell, and the cloud-to-ground lightning strikes during the height of the storm.

          1. The 3-29-84 storm was when my son was 16 days old – we lost power for 4 days – yay – and all I heard during the storm were tremendous cracks from the limbs breaking. Last Oct reminded me of that

The May 1977 storm did a lot of damage to trees etc

        1. Climatology says that. What we were saying is that it can and does happen, and sometimes in big ways. 🙂

      1. Theoretically it should be easier in May (the first 10 days anyway) due to colder air aloft and colder ocean water temps in the Spring.

        1. Haha April or May it won’t snow, make a friendly bet it’s 60+ degrees in April, and May will be 70+ degrees, winter has been done in Feb the last 3yrs and this year will b no different 🙂

  6. TK are we close enough for a forecast for Burma precip wise? Have to start malaria meds tomorrow but really thinking its not necessary this time of year. CDC says yes to malaria meds and the travel clinic says up to me 🙂

    Thanks.

    1. Hadi – I am sure checked this already but Weather Undeground has hot and dry with highs of 100-105 for the next 10 days w/ 0% chance of precip. It’s probably a pretty safe bet you won’t be seeing much in the way of precip! When are you going? Is it a business trip? That’s quite the exotic location.

      1. I did look at the weather and yes its look hot and dry, but I just dont buy those type of forecasts, like our weather can change and was curious to see if there is any chance.

I leave on Thursday for 10 days!! I work for a travel company and this is a trip as a reward for 10 of us so its fun!!!

          1. Nope its just work people as its a reward so I am getting paid to go and its free so cant beat it. Tough leaving for 10 days as my wife is pregnant!

            1. I hear you…I have two little ones myself (4 and 2) and it is tough leave. Your wife will have a lot of fun passes stored up after this trip!

  7. 5:50 am and its fairly bright, love it ! In a week, we’ll have light into a good part of the evening 🙂

Happened to read Barry Burbank’s blog and he mentioned on it that yesterday (I think) was his 34th anniversary of his first weather cast. Amazing !

  8. Birthday is coming, I have always thought even as a kid as the gateway to spring, I never remember much snow for my birthday in the last 40yrs

    1. never had much for my birthday either……………………………….

      maybe cause it’s June???

      Happy pre-birthday days, Charlie!

  9. So just a small pet peeve I usually have as we get closer to spring. On my drive into work this morning I was stuck behind a school bus (surprisingly, not the pet peeve). As I watched the kids get on at each stop, I counted a total of 3 or 4 kids with shorts on. If this was Wed or Thurs of this week then maybe I wouldn’t be as surprised, but man it was cold this morning and will be seasonably cold all day! I just don’t understand this. I don’t have kids yet, but when I do, I could never in good conscience allow my kids to leave the house in shorts today. (I think my mom would be smiling if she saw this…lol) Ok, sorry, that was my rant for the day 🙂

    1. Funny that you bring that up. I have a neighbor I think he might be in 6th grade and he has worn more shorts to school this winter. I say to my wife all the time how can his mother allow that, just crazy. It is cold this morning. Froze my but off doing rounds.

    2. my son-in-law was shoveling last week with shorts and a t-shirt on and then played outside with his son (who was dressed in a snow suit) for an hour in shorts. He just never gets cold I never wear a jacket unless it’s actually snowing and that’s to keep dry and not warm.

Girls didn’t wear pants to school when I was in grade school. My mom made me wear pants under my dress. I still remember being embarrassed.

    3. gym classes require you to have shorts in my school and alot of people do not want to change in the locker rooms .
Also some schools are roasting hot and others are cold. It depends on the school

  10. Ace I have a 2.5 year old boy and trust me he would not go out in shorts today wether he was 2 or 12!! But on the flip side as a parent you have to pick and choose your battles 🙂

    1. Very true Hadi. There could be more important things to battle over, especially as kids get older. I guess it’s one of the things my mom was hard on me about. She made sure I was prepared for the weather, and as much as I fought her on it, I’m thankful now that she cared so much.

      1. My son is almost 8. My wife makes sure our son is prepared before he heads out the door. And he is not even at the bus stop for that long. Sometimes all you can do is just shake your head with some things that you see.

        1. John, I’m glad you and your wife feel that way and make sure your son is prepared. I always had a 60 degree rule when I was growing up. If it wasn’t at least 60 at the bus stop, no shorts.

  11. good stats Hadi.

Boy it’s cold out there today with the wind–can’t wait for mid-week warmth

  12. Had a great day of skiing yesterday at Killington… I was pleasantly surprised at how decent the conditions were. They never had much of warmup or much in the way of rain or ice Saturday as conditions were not really icy at all and the coverage was good. The tree skiing was decent as well with few bare spots. It snowed lightly most of the afternoon….overall a nice winter day!

      1. You must have had a great week as you got to enjoy some of that fresh powder with none of the crowds. Not that I can even say it was that crowded yesterday…we pretty much walked right onto all of the lifts. Pretty unheard of for a weekend day in early March at Killington. I think the resorts up there are really hurting this year!

  13. A lot of warmth across the country in both the 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks. I hope there is one more snowstorm to track before we go into a lull before tracking thunderstorms when the weather blog seems to light up like a Christmas tree.
2-3 big thunderstorm days this summer but no repeat of what happened last June 1st.

    1. Yeah JJ, aside from some cool weather today/tomorrow and again Friday/Saturday, the long range GFS is very warm and uneventful right through March 20.

    2. Last June 1st I was in Nebraska dodging softball sized hail, and following the events here online within the chase van. At one point we could see a curtain of white behind us as the hail core was chasing us, but we had to drive slowly because big stones were landing all around us, some making five to six foot splashes in the gulleys that ran along the side of the road.

  14. I noticed that the NWS adjusted its (final?) winter snowfall totals for Boston this morning.

    1. 9.0″ = 1936-37
    2. 9.2″ = 2011-12*
    3. 10.3″ = 1972-73
    4. 12.7″ = 1979-80
    5. 14.9″ = 1994-95

  15. Still no Old Salty – I am now officially very concerned. TK any way you have to check to see if all is ok or would that be impolite?

    1. It’s not impolite to be concerned about someone you consider a friend, be it online or in person. I may be able to check. 🙂

  16. Hadi – have a great time on your trip!

Vicki – I had to wear pants under my skirt on cold and snowy days when I was in grade-school, too. I hated that. I also had to wear sneakers, not thongs (those rubbery sandals) whenever we went to the beach! Hated that, too! Sand and ocean water got in my sneakers – ugh!

I also still am not going to write winter off yet. It is still early March and we could still get at least one snowstorm before spring really sets in.

I hope Old Salty is ok.

    1. rainshine – I have been laughing for 10 minutes. I honestly thought I was the only one who had to do those things and yeee gads I remember the sneakers at the ocean also. And bathing caps.

  17. Thanks rainshine. If I get wifi I will post some temp observations from the other side of the world.

  18. A site that I like to visit is arctic sea ice and analysis……Since about mid February, there’s been a quick overall growth in sea ice extent, so much so, that’s its almost nearing the climatological average. Over the last several winters, sea ice has been well below normal, so to see the current sea ice coverage is somewhat eye opening.

To me, this increase in sea ice makes sense. The cold has been locked up around the pole all winter, instead of being released into the mid latitudes.

I wonder if with more sea ice………..maybe a colder arctic……might lead to overall lower pressure up there and keep the +NAO conditions going for the foreseeable future ?

  19. I think you might be on to something Tom. The last month of negative NAO was last August.

  20. Question for anyone who wants the chime in. My wife teaches high school math. Today a student had a note on his desk and would not hand it to her when he was asked several times. My wife then reached over and grabbed the note. The student, 14 yo, grabed my wifes wrist in squeezed it violently. She then told the student to stop touching her and droped the note. The student held her few several few moments after she dropped the note and then threw here arm away. Black and white question here, should the student get 10 days suspension or be expelled from school?

    1. 10 day suspension and a warning that if he acts up again it will be worse plus talk to parents

    2. My opinion is it first offense? I want to say expelled but if first may have to be suspended. But it should be more. I don’t know what but suspension is not a punishment to me. Just gets kids out of school. Something major to do after school and if he does sports or any extracuriculas he should be banned

Is your wife ok. I can imagine she is very shaken as are you

      1. I hope your wife informed the principal. Whatever punishment is up to him/her. However, perhaps your wife could press assault charges? Probably nothing would ultimately happen, but if nothing else, a good scare for the kid and his parents. 😉

Has your wife had issues with this student before?

    3. I look at it like this, a student aggressively grabbed a teacher, I also look at it as a man/boy aggresively grabbed a women/girl. His history does not come into play for me. If a boy grabs a girl that way then there is a major issue with this kid. For those reasons I would expel him, press charges and file a restraining order. What kind of message are you sending thw other 25+ kids that saw this happen in class and see him abck in two weeks?

      1. Kids at 14 make mistakes. He’s a man/child still. History is huge. And it’s natural that his history doesn’t come into play because its your wife and that’s as it should be. If the punishment is right the other 25 kids will know it.

I just asked my kids who had IMHO the best perspective. SIL was planning to be a teacher. Because of his history and strengths college has suggested he become juv prob officer

They said suspension will do nothing but send him home to where he may likely be with a abusive parent. They feel there needs to be family investigation but most of all and they stressed the only answer is to HELP him. Otherwise he will continue on same path.

  21. At the very minimum it should be a 10 day suspension. If the student has a history of this kind of behavior then I would push fof that student to be expelled.
