The Week Ahead

9:51PM

The week starts with a shot of refreshing air from Canada on a northwest wind behind a departing upper low and arriving surface high. The air moderates a little but remains comfortable through Tuesday. A warm front pushes eastward toward the region by Wednesday with more clouds and eventually a shower threat. We’ll be near a front on Thursday and Friday with warm/humid air just to the south. It’s hard to say how strong the push of this will be into the region at this point but going to lean for a stronger push of it, along with a shower and thunderstorm threat due to the closeness of the front. Looking into next weekend, low pressure in eastern Canada and high pressure over the east central US combine to send a warm westerly flow across the region.

  1. Thanks TK! On friday, I’m planning on making a beach trip, do you know when those thunderstorms might become an issue?

    1. Not sure yet. May luck out with lots of the activity Thursday and less Friday.

      Check back. 🙂

  2. Good morning all.

Pretty cool out there this morning. Yes I am fussy. As I said before, I have a
narrow comfort range. This weather is great for golf, tennis, hiking etc.
Not so good for swimming. But I digress, since I’m stuck at the office and it doesn’t
    matter.

On another subject, “could” this be our next tropical system? Look how far out this
    is. 16 days!

    1. LOL, me too on the narrow comfort range …. I’m always commenting on it being too hot, cold, humid, dry, etc ………

        1. I think they are eerily quiet ………. understandably quiet because of the current atmospheric conditions, but still eerily quiet.

I believe a big tropical system is going to impact the east coast of the US before the season is over.

I dont like that we are having a long duration east coast trof right now, because if it persists through about Sept 1st, that would be a stable 6 week pattern (since July 21 when it started) and my guess is that a new pattern might take over in September. My concern is that it would evolve back more towards a bermuda high, both creating a more favorable environment for development and tracking systems towards the US East Coast.

So, yes, I’m somewhat concerned about the next 2 months tropics wise.

  3. Thanks TK !

Mt. Washington at 32F this morning, coolest airmass I can recall in a few months anyway.

  4. Thanks TK! Sent my son off to camp in a hooded sweatshirt. Quite chilly out there this morning however I am not complaining. 🙂

  5. Not too much below normal as many have been forecasting

THIS COMING WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK…
LEANING ON THE ECMWF…WHICH HAS BEEN MORE PERSISTENT IN
TIMING…SUGGESTS THAT WITH THE SECOND WAVE THE STALLED FRONTAL
BOUNDARY IS ALLOWED TO SINK SOUTH OF THE REGION…ALLOWING FOR A
NOSE OF HIGH PRES TO RETURN BY DAYLIGHT SAT. THEREFORE…IT
APPEARS DRY WX WILL ONCE AGAIN RETURN. MID LVL TEMPS HAVE BEEN
WARMING SOMEWHAT WITH EACH MODEL RUN…SO INSTEAD OF TEMPS BEING
COOLER THAN NORMAL…IT APPEARS THAT CONDITIONS MAY ACTUALLY BE
CLOSER TO OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL.

  6. High school football has begun, the Patriots have started, I love this time of year, love it 🙂

  7. I can’t believe Attleboro is getting a new field plus football stadium for 8,600 and building it before north attleboro does there new football stadium, can’t believe that 🙂

  8. I will go on record as saying this is absolutely spectacular weather very typical of August. If I had the time I’d look into how often crisp cool weather in early August follows HHH Julys

  9. Now this crazy!! Game 6 of the Stanley cup drew a local rating of 5.8, last nights most meaningless preseason game of the year drew a 6.9,, now that’s crazy!! Who says New England isn’t becoming a football region? Seriously Football is a ratings monster

  10. I think every major city is more a football city. Football is king in my opinion. That is not disputed, i just think other sports are great to watch.

  11. Charlie, that is crazy about the football out drawing Game 6, but that is nationally. In Boston Game 6 had a much higher rating then 5.8, Boston had 33.0 rating for game 6.

    1. Hi haterain – great to “see” you and good comment! Hope you are having a wonderful summer!

    2. And nationally last night’s football game had a 3.3 share…so I doubt that Boston did better than the national average. Charlie…where did you get your #’s?

        1. Do you understand what “metered market” means??? Doubt it. But feel free to continue with some of your silly post as I’m done commenting on them…not sinking into that morass any more. Have a good one.

  12. Of course the NFL is bigger than the NHL on a national level but the ratings locally between Game 6 and an NFL pre-season game were not even comparable.

It’s a bit early to get locked into this idea that it’s suddenly going to be cool and dry. It’s August. Humidity is back by late Wednesday, with us Thursday and Friday before lowering over the weekend and returning sometime next week. Of course no major heat at the moment but we’re not done with a couple days near to over 90.

We are not even HALF WAY between Summer Solstice and Autumnal Equinox. 46 days behind us (counting today), 48 to go. In fact, the mid point takes place at 7:54PM tomorrow (Tuesday).

  13. This Summer Polar Air from Canada that we are temporarily experiencing was quite commonplace during summers back in the “Don Kent days” of the 1960’s and 70’s and would usually last for several days on end. HHH would be fairly brief and maybe last 3-4 days in a row at any given time at most.

I don’t know if the pattern change since the 1980’s is due to global warming (jury still out for me) is responsible for HHH days now dominating most summers. Also Alaska is still currently experiencing record heat. 🙁

I believe Wednesday will be the last of the Summer Polar Air until Sunday. I will enjoy until then…aaaaahhh! 😀

  14. As uncomfortable as most of this summer has been so far and as many downpours as we have had, not all that many “thunderstorms” surprisingly all things considered.

TK – Is it my imagination on this or am I correct on that?

Of course, I hate thunderstorms so it is certainly fine by me…not complaining about that part.

    1. Depending on your location. There have been some “hot spots” and some “storm drought” areas. I have not had all that many direct hits here in Woburn, but if you go to another place, Plymouth, for example, they have had many.

      1. At least here in the Boston area, most of the downpours have had very little lightning or thunder with them if at all lately.

  15. Argh. I love losing power but the one jeopardy I wanted to see was cut short by a power failure last week…..and I wasn’t even here to enjoy the blackout 🙁

  16. To: Charlie, Hadi, TK;

I am a big football fan or maybe I should say a Pats fan. The problem with football, for me, is that most studies show that an average NFL game has 11-12 minutes of actual action, yet the game is on TV for 2+ hours. In other words if you follow the Pats, you will see 11-12 minutes of action in a week. In addition, a WSJ article stated that the average play in the NFL lasts 4 seconds.

For viewing, I’ll take hockey. The average play lasts 40 seconds before there is a whistle and if you watch your favorite team every night, you will see 3 hours of action per week. In short, if you view the Pats and the Bruins during the same week, you will view, on average, 1,500% more action with the Bruins.

The TV viewing numbers for the NFL will always be higher than the NHL. Fewer fans understand and like hockey in America. In other countries, soccer will always be # 1. And other countries still, it will always be bullfighting…..a sporty which most Americans abhor.

    1. Oh dear longshot. Does that put golf in the negatives for action? Don’t know how ill break it to mac 😉

  17. 1st off you are correct tk but forgot that not only is the NFL ratings on a national level better than hockey but on a local level also. The Patriots this week for preseason game 1 will have a tv rating between 12-15.0 Locally, game 6 of the Stanley cup this year drew a 32.9 locally and Patriots games during regular season draw around a tv rating between 30-35.0, nationally the Patriots have huge tv ratings, BUT think about it since everyone is worried about the local ratings which to me personally don’t matter but anyway game 1 of the Stanley cup had a 22.1 locally and the Patriots tv ratings for game 1 of the regular season will be 30-35.0, and if it was national televised it would bring in between a 15.0-20.0 HUGE NUMBERS!! I’m not making up the numbers folks, we can turn a blind eye to this and say its non comparable but the facts r that what was once heavily saturated back in the day by baseball and hockey is no longer the case, the Patriots drew almost 20,000 people for a practice last sat!! For Practice!!! on a nationally level it’s a joke comparing football to any sport in this country, I guess what I’m saying is it not like it was back in the 60’s-70’s and even 80’s around here anymore. BEAUTIFUL NIGHT!! 🙂

      1. What do you mean by the “best” team sport in America. If you mean the most watched, that would be true.

        1. No Best team sport, no comparison, 11 vs 11, everyone has a job and if 1 player doesn’t execute his duty, the play is more times than not gonna be a dead play, I’m sure coming from a sports family pro dominantly football, my uncles a football coach my dads a football coach, I do strength conditioning with the 3 captains of the team so it may have some to do with it but this time of year is great

    1. Last nights preseason game didn’t even have our team playing and it drew a 4.6 Locally, some of our games the bruins play in regular season barly get those numbers, it’s rather astonishing to me, and baseball has been a fading sport the last few decades and we all know why 🙂

        1. Bc last nights preseason game was between 2 teams that Boston doesn’t care about really and it draws a 4.6, and then lets say the bruins our team plays a regular season gamegame and it would draw about that or less locally, I do think that tells a lot

          1. If you listed the top 50 most watched sporting events in the U.S in 2012, hockey would not make it to the list at all. NASCAR and maybe even bowling wold be there before hockey. In fact, i doubt that that baseball would even make it to the top 25 most watched sporting events in 2012 even if you threw the All-Star game in there. You are actually surprised by this??

      1. Charlie…earlier you said it was 5.8?? Which is it….and don’t tell me nationally it was 5.8 cause it wasn’t

    2. Charlie….the NFL plays a limited number of games compared to other sports so naturally the viewers are chomping at the bit so to speak and want to get their once a week hit.

20,000 for a practice is a lot…but check on the numbers for exhibition Baseball in Fort Myers for the Red Sox….about 9,000 per game for something 20 games….

Once again Charlie you lob a grenade out on the blog and enjoy watching the scramble. You are a piece of work 🙂

      1. Everyone has their own opinion about sports and what they like…for me it’s baseball….and this quote from Field of Dreams sums it up for me…

Ray. People will come, Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. “Of course, we won’t mind if you look around”, you’ll say, “It’s only $20 per person”. They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again. Oh…people will come Ray. People will most definitely come

          1. It’s one of my top 10 movies. Don’t know why I get into these arguments with Charlie..it’s a no win situation..hell it’s not even a tie…It’s like talking to stubborn 14 year old.

  18. ISS pass very visible tonight just after 9:50PM, WSW to NE. Should be a bright one.

  19. Tk, how much rain are you thinking for Thu? I’m thinking a decent dose of rain, do you concur?

    1. With a slow-pass of the trough axis, we have the potential for 1 inch plus in some locations. A bit early to pinpoint. It could be the type of setup where a ribbon of rain persists over a certain area but places outside of that get much less.

Barry B. seemed to think it may get out of here a little more quickly Thursday morning, so the jury’s out at this point.

  20. Vicky I hope you are having a nice summer as well. I am always reading comments, I just post more during the winter months or when a hurricane is on the way. My 12 year old son is always reading the comments as well because he is now a weather nut and he knows this is where to come for the best weather talk. As far as the Bruins and Patriots go I love them both but hockey is my first love. Football will always outdraw hockey and every other sport, it is one day a week and only 16 games. Every game is so important. The fact of the matter is the Bruins drew a 33 share and the football game drew a 4.6 locally. I just didn’t want any confusion on that. The Patriots will always out draw the Bruins. Let’s remember one thing though, the Bruins championship parade outdrew the Patriots.

    1. I’m not a hockey fan but the bruins IMHO give back more than any of our teams.

I’m having a great summer thank you. My youngest turns 27 tomorrow tho and that’s both exciting and a bit difficult to comprehend :). I’m glad your son is reading. Very exciting to have so many generations

    2. I agree the Patriots will always have higher tv ratings than all 3 other home sports team, i mean they play Patriots games in bars in china and london on Sundays bc of demand and there wearing Patriots jerseys, its a rather popular team. I’m not trying to be competitive by hating on the other home sports teams bc i root for them but just stating how much has changed in the sports scene locally in the last 30-40yrs. My dad said baseball has taken a huge hit from steroids and has been a fading sport and tv ratings also back up that the younger generation r not watching like they once did.

  21. Who would have thought that Boston (Logan) would have a dp of 39 at 8:00 pm obs on Aug. 5th? Nice!! 😀

    1. TK – If Boston had no tall buildings, cars, pollutants, etc. and absolutely no wind, would that “39” be a potential low temp in spite of it being August?

      1. In theory yes, but the hours of night will be inadequate for that reading to be reached even in the conditions you describe. A longer night would likely be needed.

  22. Longshot very true about the shortness of the game. I grew up abroad and watched all types of sports from cricket to soccer to tennis etc… I love all sports but for sheer entertainment value the nfl is king in this country. It came be a surprise that the NFL draws more viewership Charlie.

I love soccer as much as football but its just not as entertaining anymore unless its the World Cup.

I think the reason football is so popular is due to the fact that owners know how to run the league. Fantasy football is a huge reason it’s so successful. I think all sports offer a unique perspective on the human element and we all appreciate the differences. I don’t think bc 1 sport is viewed more, means its better. Personally put a Brazil vs. Spain or Argentina vs. England for the World Cup final and nothing beats that and I can gtd you viewership around the world would beat anything we get here. :).

  23. Also each game in the NFL means a whole lot more than a hockey or baseball game. 1 game can make the difference.

    1. I agree and that’s what I love about football, u bring your best today or go home, none of this 9 lives crap,

      1. It always amazes me Charlie how you can agree with someone and then crap on them (or their sports) in the same sentence (ie: the 9 lives crap).

  24. Good morning all.

Keeping an eye on the tropics and looking Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out there:

    http://www.instantweathermaps.com/GFS-php/showmap-natlncep.php?run=2013080606&var=PCPPRSTMP_850mb&hour=384

re: all of this sports talk.

For me, I grew up with baseball morning, noon and night. In the Winter it was hockey, hockey and more hockey. I’d fall through the ice every year trying to be the first one out there. Football was a distant 3rd for me and I absolutely loathed basketball and still do. You can take soccer and put it on the Moon for all I care. 😀

Now, it’s actually football #1, Hockey #2 and baseball #3. Basketball doesn’t exist for
me nor does soccer. You could add golf as #4.

When basketball is the subject on sports radio, I change the channel to music. 😀

    Just my 2 cents.

    1. Odd how many of us who grew up with everything baseball no longer list it as number 1. Do you think it’s because the game has simply changed to big business? To me the players simply do not in any way represent those of our days, OS.

      1. Oh and back to weather…I wonder if that dust cloud is still hindering development. I’m ready to start tracking hurricanes. hnmmmmmm that sounds bad doesn’t it??

        1. I would say for now it is. However, long range prognosticators indicate that it will break down and
will become favorable for tropical development. 😀

      2. Vicki,

Interesting question. Part of it is that I’m not playing baseball. (But then again, I’m not playing Football or Hockey either)
The other things is, the game is Oh Sooooooooooooo Sloooow!!!!
When I watch a Red sox game on TV, I’m constantly switching
channels to see what else is on and IF I find something, I’ll switch back and forth. I cannot sit through a baseball game. Even IF I go to a game, I spend a good deal of time looking around at other fans, at the press box, the announcer’s booth, the City Sky line, signs etc. etc. The game is too boring.

        1. I agree in good part although as a young person I had no trouble sitting through a game. Maybe it’s a bit of everything. Curious though.

          1. Oh and I soooo agree re basketball Just mention it and I run the other way. I enjoy golf in moderation and will watch all of the majors.

        2. watch the last inning of baseball and there is your game. basketball the same, hockey and football, you gotta watch the entire game.

  25. A little irritated with our weather for Sat morning, have a big Golf tournament to benefit Parkinson’s research and look at what we have, heavy rain Friday and Sat morning. How about a little help from all my weather peeps to get the atmosphere moving a little quicker 🙂

    1. I’m pulling for you. Wait, that will produce a Hook. How about I’m wishing
      for clear sailing for you.

Btw, we’re headed for Harwich on Saturday. For sure the Cape will be
      last to clear. YUCK!

    2. I’m wishing it away also. My husband’s uncle – one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know – had Parkinson’s. A great cause!! Good luck!

  26. Wow!! Only once have I seen crabgrass and nuts edge stunted by the 50 deg lows, it’s early for this

              1. I’ve got professional stuff called manage, it’s expensive to get rid of but I include it with the lawn program.

                1. Tx Charlie. We will have to learn to love it I guess. My lawn is a mess. I’m hoping to reseed in the fall but I say that every year so we shall see.

  28. What a chilly and on and off rainy day down here in Virgina. Highs struggled to reach 70 here today. It was nice yesterday when I arrived with nice temps and dew points in the upper 50s. I am hoping the weather is less wet for the rest of the week.

      1. Seems to be a Friday thing although last Friday it ended early. We need the rain so not complaining

  29. From the NWS:

FRIDAY…ANOTHER STRONGER COLD FRONT WILL MOVE THROUGH SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND…PUSHING THE FIRST FRONT OFFSHORE AND BRINGING ANOTHER ROUND OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE REGION. LIKE THURSDAY… MOSTLY CLOUDY TO OVERCAST SKIES WILL PRECLUDE A LOT OF THE SURFACE INSTABILITY. HOWEVER…THERE IS STILL ELEVATED INSTABILITY AND UNLIKE THURSDAY…THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF SHEAR BOTH IN THE 0-1KM LAYER AND IN THE 0-6KM LAYER. IF WE GET A BIT OF SUNSHINE…THERE WILL LIKELY BE POTENTIAL FOR A FEW STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. OVERALL THOUGH THE LARGEST THREAT WILL CONTINUE TO BE FOR HEAVY RAIN AND URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE FLOODING AS PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES INCREASE TO OVER TWO INCHES.
