  1. Here are the “Top 10″ Boston snowfall seasons including this 2010-11 season with March snow totals in parenthesis:

    1. 107.6″ = 1995-96 (16.8″)
    2. 96.3″ = 1993-94 (14.8″)
    3. 89.2″ = 1947-48 (11.8″)
    4. 86.6″ = 2004-05 (14.5″)
    5. 85.1″ = 1977-78 (16.1″)
    6. 83.9″ = 1992-93 (38.9″)
    7. *81.0″ = 2010-11 (1.3″)
    8. 79.2″ = 1915-16 (33.0″)
    9. 73.4″ = 1919-20 (11.0″)
    10. 72.9″ = 1903-04 (8.9”)

    1. It doesn’t feel like this yr was even a top 15 only bc it hasn’t really snowed much in the last 8 weeks, have a great day πŸ™‚

  2. My Oldest daughter got her first pony in November 1992. We boarded him around the corner from where she had lessons. We walked him on those snowy 1992-1994 roads every night. I remember those years well and surprisingly fondly

  3. Philip thanks for those stats. I am going to go out on a limb and say we are going to stay in the 7th spot. Nasty thunderstorms with many severe weather reports with the cold front that will be coming through here tomorrow. I don’t expect severe weather but don’t be surprised to hear thunder tomorrow.

  4. There’s a quasi-stationary outflow boundary from the earlier activity sitting in a nearly E-W orientation from the northeastern tip of CT to just southeast of Boston. You can see isolated downpours firing up along it and moving ENE almost in a cyclic fashion.

    1. Thanks for the explanation on what was causing those showers. Very brief, but heavy downpour.

  5. A couple of optimistic thoughts for this week’s weather. I believe Thursday will turn out to be a very nice day. Weak high pressure should build in and winds should be light out of the northwest, combined with April Sunshine, this is a day that should feel warm. I would think temps in the 50’s in most of SNE. South and West of Worcester I think temps could make a run at 60. Right at the coast, the offshore winds might be weak enough for the winds to turn onshore and knock the temps down late in the day. The increasing cloudiness should hold off until after sunset.

Saturday I think will turn out mostly dry as well and if we get more sun than current forecast, it could turn out to be a real bonus day. Again South and West of Worcester might make a run at 60 degrees, but even the Metrowest area could end up with a real nice day.

We will see. With so much cold and gray, I thought I would throw in a couple of days that could actually exceed expectations.

    1. I like Saturday as a day that turns out nice. Not as certain about Thursday. I’m having a hard time ignoring the GFS’s 18z run for some reason, even tho I usually don’t favor it.

      1. I actually have more confidence in Thursday….18z GFS…boo!

Did you catch my update on the NCEP model page changes or lack thereof?

  6. Also note that the reason that I listed March snow totals is to show how “puny” this season’s was (1.3″) compared to the others which are in fact, well ABOVE normal for the month of March. Only the March 1904 total is just a bit above normal (8.9″). The normal in Boston for March is 8.2″. This is the second “March” in a row for well below normal snowfall (last was 0.2″). Very odd with so much snow for the season (81″) and practically none for March. It has never happened in Boston’s history before. I can double check, but I believe that March (and April) snowfall overall has been somewhat scarce the last few years around here regardless of seasonal snowfall amounts.

    1. It has been, there’s been under 2 inches of snow combined in the last 2 yrs for March and April,

  7. Philip, in Mar 93, there was the Superstorm (I think). Do you recall what else happened that month ? That is a lot of snow !!

    1. Tom. My son still remembers the 1993 superstore as the one that ruined his 9th birthday party!!

    2. Tom, IIRC (and I could very well be remembering wrong) it was bare or just about bare ground in Boston before the storm’s arrival, so there must have been other snowfalls after the Superstorm that brought the March total to record levels (38.9″).

  8. Tom the Superstorm was in March of 1993. It was a Saturday and I remember hearing the words the big khuna is coming and it did. The snow was up to my knee caps. I was young at the time.

  9. I take back my last sentence above…Boston has received at or above average March snowfall 6 of the last 10 years. I guess most March snowstorms aren’t particularly memorable due to relatively quick melting compared to December, Janurary and February snowstorms. For me, only the 1993 Superstorm and 1984 really stand out in my memory.

  10. I find it interesting that 70% of the winter’s snowfall at Boston fell in 1 month from December 26th to January 27th.

    1. JMA, it was the same last winter as well. We got most of our snow in December and January with one last event around mid-February, then that was all for the rest of the season (35.7″).

      1. Phillip there is a significant difference to me, as this year 70% of a Top 10 winter came in 30 days or so. Last year the overall snowfall for the entire winter season was a light. I find it remarkable that as rough as winter as this one seemed for many, the significant snowfall was really confined to one month’s time.

  11. The sun was out briefly awhile ago – now it is overcast. Looks like a lot of rain just entering the Berkshires last time I looked at dopplar radar. There are actually still some scattered areas of snow where we live. Probably due to the treecover.

  12. Wind just picked up in Sudbury . It is 56 degrees here now. There has been a fog advisory up but any fog here cleared up after 5:00 a.m.

  13. Morning from Orlando,

Got a nasty line of storms about to move through here in the next hour or so. NWS says tornados are possible so of course I am on the look out. Lucky for me it’s axreally fast moving front. Will keep you posted if I see anything interesting!

    1. Hadi – hello! Hope you have been enjoying your vacation. But be careful with the storms coming your way. I looked at the NOAA radar for the Orlando area and it does look like some heavy weather coming your way. But it should move by fast. We had some thunder and heavy rain yesterday – it looks like we will have mainly just rain here, ‘though NWS earlier spotted some lightning out in Hudson Valley. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

  14. Wow an intense storm right now. Vivid lightning, on the look out for any super cell formation but I doubt it.

    1. I lived there for a year, I did not like it at all, u gotta stay inside the house for 5 months outa the year, I hated that heat, hope ur having fun hadi πŸ™‚

    1. If it was a cumulus cloud, it was a thermal that contained moisture, reached the LCL (where condensation begins), formed the cloud, which then dried out due to the marginal conditions or lack of being able to sustain it or allow to develop further.

  15. Windy warm and rainy today, I don’t think we get much in the way of thunderstorms here today in my opinion πŸ™‚

  16. Charlie I would agree with you on the thunderstorms although I would not rule out some rumbles with the cold front. Wind advisories up for parts of SNE and there is even some mixed precipitation being picked up by radar on the other side of the cold front in parts of PA and Upstate NY.

  17. The sun is in and out in Sudbury – could this cause some instability and make for some stronger thunderstorms later?

  18. The leading edge of rain looks to be pushing into the western part of MA right now. There could be some embedded thunder but I don’t anticipiate any severe weather as the front progresses toward the east. Watch for those temperatures to drop as soon as the front passes so enjoy those mild temperatures because they are on borrowed time right now.

  19. Coastal there are some people looking to join us. I know weather nut is fine but Joe I am not sure of maybe worth a try.

  20. According to radar, there is quite a bit of snow and mixed precip in much of N.Y. state just behind the area of rain in the Berkshires.

  21. It seems as though everytime these type of systems come through, west of us in berkshires usually get more rain, and we get just some periodic showers, I only see .10-.25 through this evening for most, can’t rule out a good downpour somewhere so an isolated half inch is not out of the question πŸ™‚

    1. Wind was SSW with some component off Long Island Sound, which killed the instability. We see it alot. That was my concern on the talk of heavy rain with this, and the reason why I was disagreeing with Barry on the potential 70 degree temps (not sure if you saw that discussion Sunday night on WBZ’s blog).

  22. Fairly heavy rain started in Framingham about 1:10. Wind has been strong all day but seemed to pick up slightly with the approach of the front. Still 63 here.

    1. It hit me in Framingham as well, just as I was parking my car after lunch! And of course my umbrella was already in the office…
I remember the1993 March superstorm… It hit on my 30th birthday, March 13th… Big surprise party had been planned, some friends took me out early afternoon for a sauna up in Rockport, ride back down 128 was something else, just white out conditions, off the side of the road once, but luckily made it home to Andover in one piece… Managed to get behind a plow in North Reading and worked our way up. I remember the depth of the snow was not as much as reported as it was blowing sideways so much, huge drifts, and other areas with little.

      TJA

  23. Moved through very quickly.

Hadi was glad to see you on here this morning. I was concerned when I heard the forecast for your area today.

  24. TK – I know I keep saying this but I also know first hand how much time goes into keeping a blog like this going. Terrific job! I find I’m just coming here now rather than any of the weather stations or blogs.

  25. Looks like there is still a lot of rain out to the west – has the cold front gone through yet?

    1. The front went through Bedford (Hanscom AFB) at 125pm & Boston (Logan) at about 150pm. Both places had sharp wind shifts and temp drops (Bedford dropped from 63 to 46, Boston from 64 to 51). There’s a fair amount of rain behind the front because the upper winds are still SW & haven’t really bent around to the W. The surface wind has no significant influence on this precip as it is originating at mid levels, rather than low (convection).

  26. I could not find any info on the web so I ask again, how does a cloud form in a clear blue sky only to disappear as quickly as it formed?

  27. Temperature is down to 44 in Framingham. Wind is very quiet at the moment – almost eerily so since it’s been blowing for so long. Sky overcast

  28. That just goes to show how strong this cold front is to drop temperatures down quickly. If this was the summer and we had a humid air mass out ahead of the front and plenty of daytime heating those are some of the ingredients for big storms to form.
