April Arrival

4:31PM

It’s April. No fooling. Ok I had to. Now on to the weather. It will be fairly typical of earlyΒ  April during the coming days. The pattern is still a bit on the cooler side of normal and I don’t see big changes in that for the time being. We will have to keep an eye on the weather next week because we won’t be that far away from getting a threat or 2 of a precipitation event that involves mix/snow. But for now, before getting too far ahead of ourselves, we’ll focus on the upcoming several days. There will be a mix of fair and unsettled weather as we’ll be near the jet stream with passing systems. I don’t see anything getting hung up in the region, which is often the case in Spring. Things should be moving along, so we’ll see some variability. The most “significant” system is likely to impact the region Friday night through early Sunday, clouds moving in Friday, wet weather Friday night and Saturday, and a windy sun/cloud mix Sunday as it departs. Prior to that, a weak system will produce some clouds only on Wednesday but more sun should return Thursday as a high pressure area to the northwest and north extends down into the region. We’ll worry about next week later. Ok? Great!

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 30s most areas, someΒ  upper 20s inland valleys. Wind light NW then variable to calm.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. A few mostly cloudy periods possible. Highs around 50. Wind starts calm then light SE by afternoon.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows in the 30s. Wind light SE to variable.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs around 50. Wind variable to N up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Increasing clouds. Chance of rain at night. Low 30. High 50 except 40s coast.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Periods of rain showers. Low 40. High 53, cooler S coast.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny and windy. Low 30. High 50.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Low 30. High 54.

TUESDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Low 38. High 48.

  1. Thanks tk, you have temps lower than I would have them, I see a lot more mid 50’s here, maybe 60 degrees a couple times this week, I also see 60+ next week in some long range models, also seeing green grass starting to grow, which is always a good thing πŸ™‚

    1. If there is more sun than I expect tomorrow, 55-60 is not out of the question interior southern areas. I’ll adjust later if need-be.

Thursday I think we have too much north wind and a bit of a chilly air tap.

I’m not touching next week. All I will say is there is nothing in semi-reliable medium range guidance that supports 60+ with the possible exception of Monday. Looks colder after that unless we can shoot a storm center up the St. Lawrence.

  2. I just realized that my “all important day 7” got chopped off somehow. I just re-added it. πŸ˜‰

    1. Some nice days for sure. A few unsettled ones too. Typical April, a bit cool overall.

  3. In the quiet of the evening and with light winds, I can hear the ocean waves hitting shore. As the crow flies, the ocean is probably 1 mile from me.

The sound is like a continuous plane engine of a low flying plane, somewhere in the distance.

    1. I literally felt myself relax as I read your comment. We head back Thursday night. I sooooo envy you. Careful….you might have permanent house guests if you aren’t careful πŸ˜‰

      1. That storm is cranking up some serious swells. I can hear the hum of the sound in my house …. with the windows shut.

LOL Vicki……. I saw a possible south shore gathering a few blogs back, but we’ll be south at that time…..

Perhaps before month’s end, we can meet up for an ice cream some evening. I think I could talk my kids into that. πŸ™‚

            1. We’ll be around til the 17th.

But, keep the date that works for the majority, I totally understand.

If an evening comes around that seems free, maybe we can work something out.

  4. What did the NWS do to their site ….. I’m sure I’ll like it soon enough, its just that I kind of had figured out where many things were before. Change…… Change …….. Change. Well, I guess if you dont accept it, the world leaves you behind.

  5. So my son had to go back to the hospital yesterday and spent the night. He wasn’t drinking or eating. While we are in the ER they tell us he’s been over medicated and made my wife feel very uncomfortable. We thought he was dehydrated because it was difficult to get him to drink anything. Now we followed the directions to the T so we were very confused. Once he was admitted and in his room.
They ran tests and saw that he was only slightly dehydrated but they discovered that the ER weighed him incorrectly. Because of this they gave him too much medication and they caused him to over dose. They discovered this problem and then continued to give him the correct amount of medication at his normal times which was incorrect because he already had too much in his system. I was beside myself. He is good now but the way they made my wife feel made me so angry. Sorry rant over. πŸ™‚

    1. Thank goodness he’s good now !!

Sorry what you and your wife have been through during that experience !

    2. Coastal, you KNOW you and your wife are wonderful parents. Don’t let anyone shift the blame for their error to you. As a parent we all know how easy it is to feel we did something wrong.. Sadly so does the hospital which is inexcusable. My heart aches for what you and your wife and your little guy have been through. Believe in you….

      1. So not fair to have to go through that. But I am glad once again he’s ok and hoping for the absolute best for you all from here on!

      2. Glad he is ok and that you took him in when you did. I would send a note on to the hospital management. They need to learn from what they did wrong and that they can’t treat your wife the way they did. Sorry my rant is done too :).

    3. Coastal, I’m really sorry that you and wife had to go through such an awful experience – never mind the fact that your son’s health was put in jeopardy! Thank goodness your son is going to be OK! You guys are great parents – never doubt that!!!

  6. Johnny Manziel is at Gillette for try outs, I know he won’t be a patriots but still weird

  7. 8.2 quake off of the coast of Chile. Possible tsunami …. Tsunami warnings are up near that area.

  8. I’ll get an update on “The Snow Pile” tomorrow.

In the mean time, anybody care to guess which day will be the first day that Boston (Logan) hits 70?

    I say April 16.

    1. I’ll take the day after, April 17th.

And I get the idea on the same day that it first hits 70F, it might also hit 80F and who knows what else too.

No middle ground New England. πŸ™‚

  9. Speaking of 70F temps …..

Did anyone else catch how warm it got today not too far from here ….

I’m pretty sure it was 77F in Pittsburgh and 64F in Buffalo.

  10. I mentioned to coastal the same thing happened to us when our son got his tonsils and adenoids out but fortunately the pharmacy caught the dr error while filling the script and called. The dr has written the script for 5 ML when it should have been 1 1/2 ML for a child his weight. And we are not talking about antibiotics here, these were powerful narcotics for the pain after the surgery.

    1. After reading that you shared a similar experience, I think this is important message to parents – double check dosage with pharmacist before administering any medication to children!

    2. We made the hospital give us copies of all his paper work starting from he surgery. That made them a bit uncomfortable. We are not going to sue over this, their is too much of that now a days. I would like to have a conversation with them about installing signs in each of the pedi rooms for parents to double check all dosages before anything is administered.

      1. Sadly, Coastal, this has not changed since my kids were infants. My youngest had to be hospitalized at 10 days old. A dear friend’s advice to me at the time were not to leave her side, ask questions and then ask more questions, and always double check. But how do you double check if the hospital tells you that what they are doing is correct. We were very lucky that there were no problems, but clearly many are not.

Good for you to use this to try and make a difference. I cannot imagine what you have gone through and am very happy that you little guy is home and well.

  11. Boston received a total of 25.4″ of snow for the April Fools’ Day storm.

    (3/31) 3.0″ + (4/1) 22.4″ = 25.4″

22.4″ is the most snow for April in Boston…2nd highest is 13.3″ = (4/6-7/1982).

Worcester received 33″ on 4/1/97 if I am not mistaken.

What I remember most is that many streets in Boston were never plowed. The city had put most of their plows away for the winter. In my neighborhood, people had to use their own snowblowers to clear the streets and schools were closed for the rest of the week, the remaining 4 days. I don’t remember if any snow days were made up or not.

Today (Tuesday) is the actual day of the April Fools’ storm!

  12. When the wind wasn’t cutting through me, it was pretty warm today! (In relative terms, of course) But it was beautiful nonetheless, and I loved the sun πŸ™‚

I love how the small pond at Endicott isn’t frozen anymore, and you can see it slowly “come back to life”. πŸ˜€

  13. SNOW PILE UPDATE!

The update is a bit earlier than I expected, but here it is.
As of 4-1-2014, the pile is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3 feet high at its highest point. As expected, melting more rapidly these days with many more hours above freezing. But it still has a little way to go. More updates soon!

    1. No coastal not at all, you could have started seeding about a week ago, you want to try to seed in fall as it’s the best time, if you throw seed down today it will germinate in 5-10 days, seed will germinate when soil temps reach 51 degrees, which in sunny areas soils are already at that, you should be applying 2 fertilizer w/ crabgrass reducer, 1 now and another in 4 weeks πŸ™‚

  14. Mt. Washington is 28F …..

It was quite mild yesterday to our southwest.

Dependent on path of high clouds, I’m curious to see how high the temps go today, especially central and western Mass, plus CT Valley region.

  15. Wondering if we hit 60 degrees here today and tommorrow, if not it’s gonna be darn close, weekend looks warm too, who said last week we would be back in the mid 50’s again for a while, lol that’s all I see on models is spring weather 50+ degrees, winter is long lonnnnnnnmnnnnnng gone. πŸ™‚

      1. Just yesterday I lost the last holdout of snow from a big pile along one side of my driveway.

      2. Lol very weird, we haven’t had snow here for quite sometime, I’m sure I can find a snow pile somewhere, but for all intents and purposes snows been gone for a while now, pool opening next weekend πŸ™‚

        1. Charlie, I have to ask. If your kids won’t ride their bikes in the winter because it’s too cold, how in heavens name do they go in pool water in April? If I had a pool, I’d probably open it early too so I’m not criticizing. Just curious.

    1. Don’t be discouraged ace master, your seeing a matted down lawn from a harsh winter, if you had limed a few weeks ago, the lawn would have reduced snow mold and many other winter related problems, like many years my properties south r much greener and r actually growing now, I’ve already had customers south of providence ask if they should mow this weekend. I just reached customer # 744 Good day πŸ™‚

    2. I’ve tried fall seeding in the past, and the only time it did well was when winter temps were above average. So, I can see why your new lawn didn’t respond well after the winter we just had! Good luck with you new lawn πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks shotime! Yea i think i seeded too late in the fall. I planned to get it going around labor day but i wasnt able to do it until very late in sept/early oct. I dont think the little guys had enough time to really strengthen

        1. I can’t tell how the new seed did that was mixed in with the existing lawn. It seems (hopefully) that the border area where we dug up the hostas and plants did all right with the new grass.

Do we put down fertilizer or lime first? Do you know? Can they be done together?

          1. I’ve always wondered that too. I’m not 100% sure. Most lawn care companies usually do lime first and wait till its at least semi-dissolved/absorbed into the soil. A couple weeks in between maybe? Honestly, if ur using the regular pelleted lime, I don’t think it really matters. Lime doesn’t do much initially anyways as it takes a long time to really absorb into the soil and affect the pH. I’ve done lime and fertilizer at the same time before and it was fine.

            1. Thanks, Ace. Maybe we will lime this week while we are home and then fertilize when we are home next week. After that, we’d have to wait until May and I think that is too late. We still have a fair amount of snow cover on the north side but it may be a while before it is totally gone.

    1. Interesting. We’ll see if there’s more accuracy going forward. Its apparent they didn’t apply that knowledge to this past winter’s forecast

  16. TK – what are your thoughts for Saturday morning down here in Plymouth? We are having an outdoor egg hunt at my boys’ school and we have a rain date of 4/12 and am hoping we don’t have to postpone til then.

  17. TK, u have nailed today’s forecast so far. Your addition of “a few mostly cloudy periods possible” have come to fruition in a lot of the area. Its cloudy and just hit 50 degrees here in Walpole. Will the sun come out today and play?

    1. Well I’m in Boston and it’s 54 right now. πŸ˜€

They must mean that spit of land sticking out into the harbor, I think
      it’s called Logan. 😈

      1. lol, i think ur right πŸ™‚ KBOS weather station right now officially reporting 45 degrees and overcast

  18. What’s up with the 8th?

Euro and GFS have an inside runner/almost lakes cutter, while the
CMC has a coastal with marginal temperatures aloft for SNOW.

What up? What up? What up?

OH and as to be expected, the big storm potential for the 11th has gone Poof. πŸ˜€

  19. Spring in NE can tease you from day to day, but often teases on any given day. Today is a great example. It was beautiful this morning, and felt like it would be a glorious spring day. The sun’s warmth suggested it would easily reach 60. But, hold on, not so fast, we’re in coastal NE and so … clouds roll in and a murky, overcast, cool day ensues.

  20. Glad your son is doing better Coastal at least put the fear in the Hospital Admin. about what you could do.

Weymouth Herring Run Clean Up is on Saturday at Herring Run Park in Jackson Square. This is a Rain, Shine or Snow event that starts at 0800. We would like nicer weather than what is forecast please TK if you can help on that front. Anyone can come on down and lend a hand if you are not too busy, the Herring will be grateful.

  21. CMC has gone in the direction of the GFS, euro, et al. with the idea of a lakes cutter for the period around 4/8. Could change though. For the 11th/12th, that period has turned a lot less stormy with SE ridging showing up warming almost the entire CONUS

      1. Yes, more so on the 0Z GFS, but still there on the 12Z just in a different position. The 12Z CMC also has a fairly strong ridge off the SE coast bringing a warm flow into NE

  22. Coastal – I am glad that your son is better. That must have been so frustrating for you – I know I would have been really frustrated, too.

Some crocuses have started popping up here in Sudbury. But the only sign of spring I have noticed are the days getting longer and birds singing in the early morning. I still don’t smell spring in the air yet. I’m guessing that whenever it gets to 60 degrees or higher spring will really start to pop out.

  23. Coastal my best to you and your family. Nothing makes you feel powerless and weak like an illness or injury to our own child that we can not make go way with our parental touch.

I don’t see any significant winter weather precip event impact SNE in the next 7-

  24. Great first 2 days of April weatherwise ! No highs in the 30s, some sun …. Much, much better !!

    1. For once we’re seeing a nice gradual warming. The way it should be. None of this 30 one day and 90 the next πŸ™‚

  25. Yup I think I’ll be wrong about the winter to summer this time. That’s ok. πŸ˜€

    I’ll be updating soon.

  26. With the lakes Cutters pattern similar to latest April when parts of the upper Midwest got a lot of snow.

  27. Severe weather starting to take center stage in parts of the country another sign winter is loosening its grip.

  28. Another 10 day today. Got up to 87 but again no humidity. We went legoland and the kids loved it. No lines!!
