Cold Opener

6:05PM

What a great day for baseball … today was. Too bad the home opener for the Red Sox at Fenway Park, just a few miles from the ocean, is tomorrow (Friday). It’s going to be a cold one. Not Arctic cold, but ocean cold. East wind, thickening overcast, temperature in the 40s. That’s a chill to deal with when one is sitting in a park watching a game that evokes memories of hot summer afternoons and warm summer evenings. Patience all. Patience. Those days will come – though the heat part of it may be to the dislike of some of you. What is true now is that we have to deal with the influence of the cold waters of the North Atlantic, which sits right next to us, and has a profound impact on weather near and several miles inland from the coastline on a fairly routine basis during the Spring. Hey, at least the rain will stay away for most of the game, though we can’t rule it out by later in the game, hopefully very light! Yes, more rain on the way, not that it’s been excessively wet of late. March was on the dry side, actually, for much of it, with a very wet ending to the month. But we do have more rain coming, Friday night and early Saturday, as low pressure passes north of the region but drags a warm front through to start with, and then a cold front just behind it. The speed of the system means that Saturday, though starting wet and grey, turns much nicer during the course of the day as a drier and milder west wind develops. And it gets even better. A little bubble high comes in for Sunday and makes it a very nice day ’round these parts. With lighter winds, however, we cannot rule out sea breeze which would set up a significant contrast between coastal and inland temperatures. But it does look like whatever the temperature, that sunshine will be the rule.

Once we start the new week, a new low pressure area will be coming out of the southern US and heading into the northeastern US, probably taking a similar path to the system of Friday night and early Saturday. The weather for Monday and Tuesday may closely resemble that of Friday and Saturday, with fine tuning to be done of course as that time nears.

By the middle of next week, medium range guidance ranges from a chance of snow to a partly cloudy and mild stretch of weather. With a little science mixed with a little optimistic ignorance, I’ll be generalizing a low confidence outlook for Wednesday/Thursday which is subject to change. So please have a salt shaker ready for when you read those, unless you are on a low sodium diet of course. 😉

  1. Thanks TK.

I’m back on the deck watching the waves. It’s cool. Low 40s but sun is out. I neef a light jacket. Mac is huddled inside !!Hoping to see the moon over the ocean tonight :).

      1. I was thinking the moon might be over the river. Thanks Tom. It was in the west in framingham…..logic might have told me it’d be west here huh ?

  2. TK – I haven’t used a salt shaker in 30+ years. I quit almost cold turkey and it took me about a week to stop for good. 🙂 Unfortunately, it is hard to find low or no sodium products. I still have to take blood pressure meds but imagine if I still used the salt shaker.

There is so much talk about too much sugar, but IMHO sodium is the bigger threat to one’s health.

    1. I agree. But like sugar, sometimes people can go overboard with avoiding it. Sodium is one of the most crucial substances our bodies need to function properly. Each cell in our body uses sodium to maintain a proper fluid balance and helps with muscle contraction and keeps the nervous system functioning properly. The problem is, the line between an adequate amount and too much is very small, much like sugar. Its all about moderation. Avoidance can be just as unhealthy as overindulgence.

      1. I agree with you Ace. In fact, I recently heard about a study that too little sodium can be just as harmful as too much. You are absolutely correct, it is all about moderation.

      2. There is a lot of sodium in our regular foods. I am to the point where I really notice any foods with salt in them. When we were kids my brother worked summers for a moving company. Because he perspired so much the dr gave him salt tablets. He had high blood pressure in his 20s. Crazy what we didn’t know

  3. I just heard on the CBS Evening News that David Letterman is retiring sometime in 2015. I rarely watched his show over the years, however, I have been watching more frequently ever since Leno stepped down from the Tonight Show. It is not necessarily a reflection on Jimmy Fallon, it is just that lately Letterman has had some pretty good guests for my interest lately. 🙂

  4. After a 1 cooler day, could we be in for 4 or 5 days straight of daytime high temps around 60 degrees? Away from the immediate coast I’m thinking so, 🙂 goodnight

  5. Tough night in the central US.

I think there’s 4 current tornado warnings and even beyond that, a lot of thunderstorm coverage, with a cold, wet snow side to the storm in the northern Plains.

      1. True.

Tornadoes are bad anytime, but its really tough to have them at night. That must be extremely scary.

    1. I love how it can vary year to year, from a weather standpoint.

It will be a little tough sitting in the ballpark this afternoon, but that’s the risk taken when you get tickets for a game in April. 😉

      1. Agree it can be tough, but people were lined up at the crack of dawn for remaining tickets.

        1. If they hadn’t won the world series, or better yet, hadn’t even made the playoffs, it would have been a much different story IMO. There would be tumbleweeds passing through Lansdowne St.

          1. Isn’t that the truth Ace! Thankfully, we were able to take our son to a few games some years past when he was just a young lad playing little league, and so very proud of sporting his Red Sox cap! Now, if you’re lucky enough to come by a couple of tickets, and they weren’t a wonderful gift or perk the bank has just been broken so that you can treat your family to a magical day/night at Fenway Park!

    1. Yes, very much so! I will say, the mornings this week have been spectacular 🙂 I suspect clouds will begin rolling in from the south anytime now though. Already overcast in the PVD area and moving northward

      1. I had coffee on the deck and am
Now sitting in the sun. Just a light breeze so very comfortable.

      1. I don’t know, but I can tell you that we were able to hear
the entire Jimmy Buffet concert one night. 😆

We WILL see the jets for the fly over that’s for sure.

        1. That’s very fun OS. Sometimes they fly out over Framingham while waiting and that’s a huge treat

          1. I used to live right next to the South Weymouth Naval Base and nothing beat the sound of the Weekend Warriors performing their drills. And then there was the Blue Angels shows…WOW! They would be so low flying over my house that I was certain they would land in my backyard. Great memories.

  6. Clouding over in Walpole. This morning I noticed some greening up of the lawn on my company grounds. Not at home though, still dead as a door nail, lol

  7. Responding to LESS sunshine and the East wind, temp here now 45.3

That’s an ICEBOX for a baseball game. No sweat for football, but for baseball….
    NOT GOOD. Brrrrrrr

  8. Good afternoon, I thought it would have been cooler and cloudier, suns still poking it, and it’s 50 degrees out here, not bad at all 🙂

  9. The GFS anyway, seems to have been consistent for a couple of runs, regarding April 11th and a SW flow ahead of a cold front attached to a low moving to our north.

I wonder if a week from today could be the 1st 70F day ????

  10. Sun has been in and out all day, lean towards more sun, just recently has clouds really thickened

Has many friends involved in those tornado warnings from Krum to McKinney Tx last night, I used to love seeing those storms there, even held baseball size hail back in 99 in garland Tx, amazing stuff there. Scary but amazing, off to a movie around 430, good day everyone 🙂

  11. Quite cloudy here in Plymouth. I am off to a flag football game on a field that always feels at least 10 degrees cooler. But OS was so right when he said if this was fall football then I would think it was perfect. Go Vikings!!!

      1. It was a win against their arch rivals from last season. Awesome game and my son was a defensive dynamo! Love flag football!

    1. BJ Thomas. That was my favorite song when I was about 6. 😀

Who’d have thunk at some point I would like a song that bitched about rain? 😛

  12. Not that I think we should expect this, but the 12z Euro showed a big snowstorm 9-10 days from now, 8-12″ all the way to the Cape and Islands.

    1. I think that model is confused.
Though I don’t count snow out in April, I’m not sure that solution is viable.

  13. went from 57 degrees this morning/early afternoon and sunny and plummet down to 38.. with clouds and wind welcome to new england

  14. I wrote this story and posted it to my personal Facebook page a short while ago. It’s unrelated to weather, but I wanted to share it here. And yes it is a true story. 🙂

At a local assisted living facility, the residents often do activities under the supervision of activity assistants. One of these is balloon volleyball. You can probably picture it – a couple rows of seated seniors batting a balloon back and forth. You don’t see too many spikes in this game, but sometimes they attempt one… usually accompanied by a big cracking sound and a howl of pain. Anyway, this particular facility recently welcomed a new activities coordinator. On one of her first days, balloon volleyball appeared on the schedule, so off she went to get the balloons. Now picture a couple rows of seated seniors, staring puzzled at the ceiling, a balloon stuck to it.

Helium? All you needed was air for those balloons. Rookie mistake. 🙂

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  15. Just got back from the lux level Patriot Place and dinner, light rain on the ride home, temp 41.2 degrees, goodnight everyone 🙂

    1. So true Hadi. Tomorrow my daughter is going to St. John with her friend’s family. How I wish my wife and I were going too! Hope you and your family had a great time in Florida.

  16. I think everyday this coming week could be above normal temps. Not sure it will happen, but a very decent shot at it. It’s hard to believe!

    1. Today – near.
      Sunday – slightly above.
      Monday – near to above.
      Tuesday – above.
      Wednesday – near to below.
Thursday – near (cold start warm finish).
      Friday – above.
Next weekend – near to below.

  17. Average high for today is close to 60 degrees, looks like we will be around the average high today, like I said the week coming up looks nice with temps 60+ degrees 🙂

  18. And don’t think you will, snow is gone till at least late fall. Hopefully it’s not as cold as next winter. All and all even though we missed some really close storms this in my thinking was I would say a pretty normal winter with cold and snow. Over 50 inches of snow is not bad but the cold was the big story . Looking like high 50s most of next week from what I’ve seen.

  19. Beautiful start to the day with the sun out.
Final Four Saturday one of my favorite sports days of the year. I was fortunate to go to the Final Four and National Championship game in 1996 when it was in East Ruthford, NJ. It was an experience I will never forget along with going to two world series games in Yankee Stadium in 96 and 09 and NBA Finals Game In Madison Square Garden in 94.
How many final four teams did you get correct??? I had one Florida and I have Florida winning the whole thing. I maybe the only person in CT not rooting for UCONN tonight since I have a chance to place 2nd in the pool I am in if Florida wins tonight and on Monday Night.

  20. I’m going to kill the “mostly sunny” part of the forecast later today. I think after we break a bit the clouds are going to fill back in over a large portion of the region.

This will also cap temps a bit, maybe 3-5 lower than what they would have been.
