    Good morning all.

Thank you all for you concern and well wishes yesterday.

The event went beautifully. Every one had a great time.
We had some excitement with that first storm. The wind surprised the
hell out of me as all I read all day was that the winds aloft were light,
thus NO strong winds. Bull Shit!!

The wind blew over every table outside of the tent and nearly took the tent
down. People were actually holding the tent in place as the wind tried
to lift it. Unbelievable. In addition it poured buckets but no hail that I could
tell. One good thing, it cooled things off considerably as it was freakin HOT!!!

2nd storm just missed us to the South. I was super worried about that one.
We had some more thunder and lightning and a bit more rain.

3rd system came after the event. It rained pretty good for a decent amount of time.
Great lightning display lighting up entire sky.

Finally I could open the windows in the house around Midnight.

I haven’t checked email to see if anyone emailed photos of big tree down.
If I get them, I shall post. By the time I got home, the tree was cleaned up.
all that was left was an 8-10 foot stump of what was a 2 foot diameter large tree.
It snapped right off 8-10 feet up. Amazing. Literally 200 feet from my house.

      1. El NiΓ±o effects, Sahara dust ……… in the long term, it should have an uphill battle.

In the short term, it seems embedded in a moist atmosphere and the upper levels don’t look too hostile, so, it would not surprise me if it develops some in the short term.

  2. Thanks tk πŸ™‚

Received a generous .21 here from last nights exciting thunderstorm night, again every couple to 3 days we get some rain. This summer ranks up there as the best year rain wise for the lawns. No prolonged heat or drought stress with no water. Enjoy the day πŸ™‚

  3. While yesterday was day #7 of 90F+ at Logan, I believe the highest temp seen this summer has been 92F.

There was a Wednesday a week or two ago that was 93F to 95F inland, but Logan seabreezed all day and then hit 92F about 6 or 7 in the evening when the wind turned west.

Which brings me to tomorrow. I think Monday may be the day that gets Logan very close to 95F. I’d be curious to see what it would have gotten to today, but it appears the seabreeze will hold it in the 80s.

    1. Yesterday was brutally hot here. It was awful and very humid.

Logan probably would have made 95 without sea breeze yesterday.
Today does not seem nearly as warm.
Tomorrow? Who knows. But the sooner this blasted heat and humidity
      leaves the better!!!

  4. I heard on WBZ radio this morning that the Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting a snowy winter for NE and the Pacific Northwest.

I suspect El Nino will wipe out that OFA outlook. πŸ˜‰

However, I could see the PNW getting beneficial rains and snows so maybe the OFA will be “half” right, much like even a broken clock is correct twice a day. We will see. πŸ˜€

Great. The Old Farmers Almanac is predicting another winter of above-normal snow and below-normal temperatures for much of New England.

    1. That would be fine with me, except I don’t buy it given the atmospheric and oceanic conditions. Of course, time will tell. One thing we can say with certainty is that 4 months from now when we’re out doing our holiday shopping, it’s not going to hot and humid, no-one will have their AC or fans going, and we’ll all be comparing notes on battles between GFS, Euro, Canadian, Japanese, and experimental models regarding snowstorm possibilities.

      1. Love it.

For certain with a super el nino, odds favor a milder
Winter with less than normal snow. No doubt about it.
However, not a 100% guarantee, so we’ll have to see
what happens. It’s like a sporting event where for a certain game one team is the overwhelming favorite to win the game because of superior players, coach, homefield etc. etc. etc. Guess what? The game is still played and sometimes the inferior team wins. Just the way it goes.

So yes, I know the likely outcome, but I hold out for a different outcome. We shall see.

  6. Thanks, TK.

JP Dave, Glad the wedding went well. Are the newly weds honeymooning this week?

Tom, I think you’re right about Monday being perhaps the hottest day of the year.

Charlie, I think the summer has been very good to lawns down where you are. I agree with you that a summer like this doesn’t stress out the grass or other vegetation. This said, there’s been less precipitation in Boston and so I see more signs of stress here than down where you are.

  7. Having discussed with family who were all watching the storm, we do not think we had three inches here. The flooding reports all seem to be from Rt 9 south and we are north. The main part of the storm was literally just south of us. Amazing how fune a line a storm cuts

  8. Thanks, TK. No apologies needed for yesterday – the weather is and probably will always be unpredictable. Hope you are feeling better (I think you said you weren’t feeling that great – I could be wrong).

Jp Dave, glad everything went well yesterday even w/some wind and storminess. Congrats to the newlyweds.

I shut off my computer earlier than usual yesterday because here in Sudbury it started thundering by mid-afternoon and basically it thundered almost constantly well into the evening. There was lightning too – but no wind – and the rain didn’t arrive until around 9:00 p.m. and it wasn’t that heavy, either.

But the sky during the afternoon was amazing. Towering cumulus in shades of white and deep gray w/patches of blue sky and areas of pink and orange. And just before sunset off to the southeast horizon, through the trees, we could see almost a bright orange sky. My sister in Framingham had small hail, heavy rain, thunder and lightning and wind. Quite a day, weather-wise.

    1. Thank you. The tree in my neighborhood was that big as well.
Don’t have photos as they have not been emailed to me.

Until then, best I can do is snap a photo of what’s left when I go out]
      in a bit.

      1. Huge. Certainly picked up power after it went through here. I still thought it should have been warned earlier.

    1. Love it….I still have one somewhere out in the garage. CB radio had it’s day back in the 70s helping truckers, etc. Now with smart phones, wifi in cars and trucks CB has become a cesspool of the airwaves. Always a poor man’s version of Ham radio it’s almost unlistenable. But now for some reason I want to go find my base station and power it up πŸ™‚

    2. Thanks for the picture. At one time, both me and my husband were CBers. My handle was Cricket and my husband was Nickel-Brick. That was in the 70’s but then we became Amateur Radio Operators. I still have my call but am not active. My husband still has his call and is still relatively active, ‘though.

      1. My husband finally explained his handle to me – it was from Dorchester. It referred to taking a cheap baseball, the kind that loses its cover after 4 or 5 hits and retaping it w/black electric tape and using it to play ball so he wouldn’t have to buy a new one. That was when he was 7 or 8 yrs. old. It was more than a half-century ago.

        1. Oh yeah, We all did that. No one had the money to go purchase a new baseball, so it was slap the tape on em
and good to go. Love it.

        2. I remember playing sandlot ball at the smaller of the two fields at Town Field in Fields Corner (Dorchester) when I was a kid in the early to mid 60s. We used one of two type balls when playing. One was what looked like a normal baseball but was usually stuffed with sawdust and cut up newspapers (usually Chinese) usually after an hour or two the stitching would come loose and the sawdust would come spewing out when the ball was hit. The other was more of hard rubber (best way I can describe it) fake stitching (nothing more than raised rubber) but the ball (when hit) would go a country mile. It also lasted longer than the other ones but usually cost about $1 or $1.50.

    1. How could you have stooped to that level? πŸ˜›

      πŸ˜‰

My nickname came from the CB actually.

          1. The one I have now was purchased from Rat Shack (about 15 years ago). At one time Radio Shack was the place to go for all things radio related. They had a great store on Comm Ave (2 floors) with radios and some of the best stereo equipment around (back in the late 60s through the 70s).

  9. Well if the Old Farmers Almanac is calling for a cold snowy winter we know will get the opposite. The Farmers Almanac comes out later this month.
Dave glad the wedding went well and congrats to the newlyweds.

  10. Jimmy…Did the Old Farmer’s Almanac call for a cold snowy winter last time or the opposite? Just curious if they actually had record snowfall in mind.

The reason I am so skeptical of the OFA is because IIRC they called for “sunny & mild” the same week as the Blizzard of ’78. Also I just don’t believe El Nino can be ignored.

    1. Hi Philip… I believe the Old Farmers’ Almanac did call for a cold snowy winter. To me more signs pointing to a mild winter than cold snowy one.

  11. Remarkable story about how California has been coping with the drought. It’s always been a place that’s innovative. We all know about the technological innovations as well as biotechnological advances coming out of the Golden State. Prior to reading this article, I hadn’t realized how incredibly innovative Californian agriculture is. Hold lessons for other parts of the world that have not been able to handle droughts, leading to deprivation and famine.

    1. Excellent article. Thank you, Joshua. I have forwarded to Mac and to his brother who lives just east of San Francisco.

They started late. One of things Mac is vocal about is water and I’ve heard him wonder for decades where our desalinization plants are…among other things. But they started and they are certainly showing great progress. Your comment about this being a lesson is excellent. However, I’d say we need to learn that lesson right here in this country. The world is facing a water shortage and that includes us.

Again, I truly appreciate your sharing that link as I know my roommate will really enjoy reading (as did I). I thought you might also be interested in these links.

      1. Thanks for sending the articles on desalination.

One thing that may happen with El Nino is an onslaught of rain in California. Although rain is welcome, lots of it all at once on dry ground may produce mudslides.

        1. Very true but it sadly will only be temporary and as you say, lots runs off. We have a problem. It’ll be a lot harder for a country to catch up than it was for a state πŸ™

  12. A little unsettling to once again have a plane go down without the pilots having sent a distress signal or message. Most unusual. The accident in Indonesia is probably weather-related, although that is unclear. Still, even if weather-related usually distress signals or messages are sent. I do know that Trigana Air is blacklisted from flying in Europe, due to concerns with airline safety.

  13. Evening all. Here are a few thoughts in my head about the upcoming weather from here to as far ahead as I want to think about….

*Monday heat: Yup, it’s gonna be hot. Nothing we haven’t seen before.
*Tuesday storms: Yup, isolated to scattered storms, somewhat like Saturday, with a few strong ones possible. Very warm to hot and muggy.
*The heat continues Wednesday then eases later in the week but the muggies remain, so there will be a risk of showers/thunderstorms late Thursday then off and on through next weekend.
*Old Farmer’s Almanac Winter Forecast: It’s fun to read. πŸ˜‰

    1. And the weekend. HHH ? Working on a bday party for Maccer but we’d wait if too hot to make it comfy for him. Thank you πŸ™‚

      1. Not sure about that. I think it may be held at bay by onshore flow but there may be a boundary nearby with some showers/storms.

  14. Went to the sacco river this weekend with a group of my friends. we Swam in the river friday afternoon. then had a fire, and saw shooting stars and an amazing star view. Saturday we went to hike moat mountain, it was a challenging hike but well worth it. great views. the only problem is that when i told them, I see storm clouds, No one listened. we were fine when we went up. then caught in a few downpoors, luckily we had our swimsuits. πŸ˜‰ then today we did the sacco. The cool thing about the place we stayed was that everyone that was camping were so friendly and would just come up and intruduce them selfs. Just a great weekend and just the beginning of the late summer push. Next is band camp. next is cape. I wish the heat of this week would not happen. lol I want the 70s this week lol
