Sunday Forecast

8:18AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 5-9)
Short and sweet update, with basically no changes from yesterday’s forecast. More heat for a few days as ridge dominates and then that ridge slides to the east again and a trough brings in a better shower/storm risk by the middle of next week. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Moderately humid. Highs 78-85 Cape Cod, 85-92 elsewhere. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 64-72. Wind light W.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Moderately humid. Highs 80-88 south-facing shores, 89-96 elsewhere. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 65-73. Wind light SW.
TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. More humid. Highs 82-87 coast, 87-92 interior. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Humid. Showers/thunderstorms likely. Lows from the middle 60s to middle 70s, warmest in urban areas. Highs in the 80s.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Slightly less humid. Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Lows from the lower 60s to lower 70s, warmest in urban areas. Highs in the 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 10-14)
Isolated thunderstorms are possible August 11, 12, and 14, otherwise mainly dry weather and temperatures ending up above normal with more building heat as the dominant high pressure ridge slides back to the west, closer to the Atlantic Coast.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 15-19)
Very warm to hot pattern with mainly isolated showers/thunderstorms at times as the Bermuda High remains dominant but some heat from the middle of the US also gets transported eastward as well.

      1. Between the Saharan dust and the below normal sea surface temperatures out that way, it will be tough to get anything going out that way in the near future.

  1. Thanks TK.

The operative word in the forecast going forward: hot. Just a downright hot and often humid weather pattern continuing for the next 2 weeks. The latter part of July, while warm and oppressively humid, didn’t feature much in the way of excessive 90+ degree heat. Looks like we’re bringing the 90’s back for August. Quite a summer from a heat standpoint.

Also, some very impressive rainfall totals (4-5″) on the outer Cape last evening. That was a dynamic weather system impacting us yesterday.

  2. Thank you, TK.

In these parts, heat has been a theme this summer, although I’d say humidity has been more dominant than heat. Anomalous heat has been persistent throughout much of Europe and parts of Asia, such as Japan and Korea. At the same time, the polar regions have been relatively cool. And that has been persistent as well.

While it rained in many parts of Massachusetts yesterday, Boston didn’t get much. That’s been a theme, too.

  3. So far I think the very best two weeks of the summer were July 7-21. The south shore folks sure know how to get it done. Thank you.

  4. Some thoughts and questions

For the Douglas Northbridge tornado, there is a noticeably narrow and easily traceable path of tree damage through Uxbridge and then along the path with tree debris on the roads it crossed. There was no house damage where the two larger trees were downed.

I know NWS is still determining the full path but

As with the Douglas tornado, it is very easy plot a path from where the cell entered west Sutton to just north of the Blackstone CC and into east Sutton and then south Grafton. There is the same tree damage and debris. However, from photos on the storm chaser FB page, the damage in S grafton is very similar to what I saw in Upton. Note I saw Upton first hand but only saw photos of S Grafton.

So….can a strong cell alone cause a long, narrow path of damage? Or would straight line winds cause a long, narrow path of damage? Or would it be a continuation of the tornado in webster?

FWIW….I think we have had our share for rhe season and am more than happy to share the “joy” with anyone else.

    1. Tk you answered my questions on FB. Thank you. I’ll be curious when nws delivers its final report tomorrow to see if this thing skipped.

  5. Yes it’s Cape Verde season and it will produce few than average storms due to dry air and below normal water temps.

Regarding the first comment today… As my 7th grade English teacher would have said: “You think you’re gonna get an F? I’m going to give you a Z minus!” Loved that guy.

    1. My mother used to use the term “Z minus” in conversation on occasion. All these years I always assumed that she was the original author. 😉

      1. I can honestly I never heard the term. If any of my teachers except math knew of it, they would have used it with me.

  6. Great day down here in Sarasota 90°Dp has been hovering 75°-78° today. Looks like the muggy air will follow me back up to RI next weekend.

  7. Some TV Met said it would be a little more comfortable today.

Right! abd I’m Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy all rolled into
    one.

    Bull CRAP!!!!

Dp is 70 here!!! It’s 70 at Norwood and 69 at the air port. How the hell is that more
    comfortable.

Honestly I didn’t expect a big drop in DP, but was hopeful for 65 or so.

    NOT! NOT! NOT! NOT!

That front has simply washed out leaving in its wake essentially the same
    damn air mass!!1

    1. How is Mrs OS. I may not mind this weather but I’m ready for a day to throw up the windows and let nice fresh air run through the house. All of that said, it looks as if there will be a long wait.

      1. Absolutely MISERABLE! I was hoping for a bit of a break.
We are supposed to be heading to our daughters for a cook out.
Not sure we will make it.

        Thank you.

  8. Ik for some it’s tough but we love 85-90 degrees with dew points in the mid 60’s. For me it becomes uncomfortable 70+.

  9. What a joke. LOGAN has a sea breeze and it is only 82
there while the rest of the city BAKES in 90+ degrees)(!@#()!@&#&!@&#!)@(#&*)

    JOKE JOKE JOKE JOKE!_)@*#(!&@*(#&!(*&@#*(!&@*#&(!*&@#*(&!@(*#&!(*@&#*(!&@*(#&!(*@&#(!*@&#(*!&@(*#&!(*@&#(*!&@#*(&!(*@#&(!*@&#(*!&@(*#&!(*@&#*(!&@#*(&!@*(#&(*!&@#*(!&@*(#&!(*&@#*(!&@(*#&!(*@&#(*!&@#(*&!(*@#&(*!@&#*(!&@*#&!*(@#&(!*@&#(*!&@#(*!&@#(*!@*#&!*#@&

absurd location for weather obs and records.

      1. They do now, but it was not always the case. 😉

It’s essential to have a station there BECAUSE of the airport, but it is not representative of the entire city. It is more anomalous than any other location, often cooler spring/summer, warmer autumn/winter, than other parts of the city. And despite what people think, Boston covers quite a bit of area when you take all its sections together.

  10. I’ve been running around all morning with slippers on my feet.
They were so sweaty, I couldn’t put my socks on………….

geez enough already! Send it away NEVER to return again!!

  11. So there is an up side to the on and off rain. I haven’t had to water rhe lawn since return from Humarock. It didn’t occur to me until we just turned on a zone for the grandkids to play in the sprinklers. A right of childhood. It’s looking quite good…except a part beside the driveway which is nothing but what I untechnically call nuts hedge or witches grass. Arghhhhhh.

    1. I hadn’t heard about this today until my wife and daughter started telling me about it. Sad story ! Upon heading home from the beach today, the channel 5 truck was at the Brant Rock wall, I assume ready to report on their evening broadcast.

      1. I am sure you are right. It truly is sad

It seems there have been more whales than I recall in the area this year, but you would know best.

        1. I believe you, I’ve rarely seen whales over the years. I do think the seals seem to be increasing.

          1. Yes on the seals also. We also never saw them and now see them regularly even in the couple of weeks we are there

  12. We are on the porch. This weather is truly beautiful. Having a cookout, many have said that. Honestly extremely comfortable for a 61 yr old.

    1. Many have said “having a cookout?” And who is 61? You? Is it comfortable for a 60 year old, or a 59 year old, or do you have to be just 61? 🙂

  13. It was pretty hot today. I did some biking in the heat. Though I enjoyed being in nature and seeing lots of birds (mainly herons), it was not comfortable. Humidity is still fairly high.

My cat’s had it with the humidity. Was sitting in front of an unplugged fan when I got home, meowing (“turn that thing on, now!”).

Philip, the .64 of rain at Logan sounds about right. But, that was not much. Certainly not if we compare it to other parts of the state. And, it’s been that way with almost every rain event this summer.

    1. Hi Joshua. It compounds. I am laughing at your cat. Very clever

Some Kids in Atlanta start school tomorrow. Makes no sense to me or my sister in law who said, wisely, it is far more humid and temps are higher on average now than in June. Schools have AC but most buses do not.

  14. Not good for many folks and Not the end.

    Heat Advisory

    2:58 PM EDT, 8/05,expires 8:00 PM EDT, 8/07

… Heat advisory in effect from 11 am Monday to 8 PM EDT Tuesday…

The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a heat advisory, which is in effect from 11 am Monday to 8 PM EDT Tuesday.

    * Heat index values… between 95 and 100 degrees.

    * Timing… Monday and Tuesday.

    * Impacts… heat related illness can occur for those who do not take precautions.

    * Location… most of southern New England.

    Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9 1 1.

    1. Thank you, Vicki.

Now, contrast the heat advisory with this weather warning from January 5th, this year:

      http://www.wbur.org/news/2018/01/05/mass-cleans-up

      Which would you prefer?

I think the vast majority of people would prefer tomorrow and Tuesday to what we had on January 5th. That said, I’m not in the majority. Just by looking at the picture in the link and seeing the words “wind chill warning” I get excited about the prospect.

      1. I love the photo for me. I worry with extremes for people. Personally, although I love seasons, if I has to choose one, it would be colder. It’s why I say my favorite seasons are October 1 to Sept 30 😉 I think you and I are a lot alike with energy levels being temperature dependent.

      2. O geez that sends chills literally up our spines. You are right. Leave that for the North Pole. Of course I’m sure many don’t live there, or would want too.

        1. I heard only about 0.07% would want to live there, but only if they could meet Santa in person.
