  1. Thanks TK.

XFL is filing for bankruptcy. It appears that they are done as an organization.

I heard this morning that Boston University is not restarting the academic year until January 2021. Is this for certain?

    1. I believe so Philip I heard the fall semester will start in January. That might be to much time in my opinion but they want to play it safe with the uncertainty. Many experts I’ve heard including Fuci that there could be a second wave of this .

    1. If we continue the social distancing protocols into the summer perhaps that second wave can be prevented.

      1. The problem is that the social distancing helps immensely, but
since people are still out and about picking up groceries, medications, their liquor items and their banking, it opens up
the real possibility of a 2nd wave or simply a continuation
of this one until we all get it.

        1. I’m extremely curious as what the government is going to do about Memorial Day weekend. I know the cape & NH do not want folks rushing up from Boston the NH Governor said it yesterday . I have a rental up Hampton the last full week of July .

          1. Does your rental fall under the no rental policy? I haven’t paid too much attention to that. We are to go to Humarock in August and I suspect that won’t happen even then.

            1. No idea Vicki but I’m dealing with the save person I’ve dealt with before I pay cash on arrival. Was reading an article last night from NH Governor he’s in no rush for folks invading there lakes & beaches

              1. As is the place we rent. But I believe many states have stopped Airbnb’s and VBRO type rentals.

      2. We can’t even seem to social distance now. But then key people do not seem to understand we need a nationwide shut down.

        1. The president won’t do that . He is fighting with the Governor’s now because they are forming a economy pact to open up only when it’s safe only . The president is saying they can’t do that because he says when it’s his call not there call . But he left it up to each Governor to call the shots up till now ( unbelievable)

      3. Regardless of how well or well not you think we as a community / society are obeying social distancing guidelines, the fact is we have much less person to person contact because the majority of people are practicing social distancing. Once we start to slowly get back to work and try to normalize our lives again there will be more person to person contact which will increase cases. The cases won’t be close to what we experience now but there will most certainly be a bump up of cases. What percentage remains to be seen.

        1. Agree but doing that I believe is still a ways off & the mayor & Governor both said that . The order in May will 100% be extended they pretty much hinted at that

        2. I hope that I heard incorrectly, but there are a number of western states (governors) already collaborating on opening up their perspective states soon. Scary thought imo if this verifies.

          1. I don’t know . There is some pact that baker just signed along with NY, CT etc . Pact to come up with a plan to be ready when that time comes but clearly saying not now it’s a preparation pact. I believe it’s because the president wants to open everything ASAP and they do not agree & the president is tweeting saying it’s not there call it’s his . They wavy to do it only when it’s safe no matter when that is .

          2. I think, Philip, they will be collaborating on a plan on how to open up their economies, led by science, but not necessarily that they are opening up soon.

  2. Have you ever been in the water at the beach and the waves come in sets.

So the first wave clobbers you and on some occasions, the second wave is right behind it and its just as nasty and it clobbers you, in some cases worse.

Other sets of waves are more spaced and because of the space, you have more time to react to the 2nd wave and you saw the 2nd wave coming, because it wasn’t in the “shadow” of the first wave. You have a plan for the 2nd wave and deal with it much more easily than the first.

Lets see which wave pattern the US jumps into …….

      1. Thanks Tom. But in this case of a virus, is it theoretically possible to “prevent” that second wave from happening in the first place?

          1. Maybe. But Not if it mutates 1918 second wave mutated. But some of the thought is that was from soldiers to different areas of the world

        1. I’m guessing its possible, if mitigation strategies last a long time. Also, we are used to our freedoms. I think we wont mitigate long enough, nor enough of us give up our freedoms to the extent we have to, in order to realize some kind of increase again this summer. I consider this rise part of the first wave. I consider the 2nd wave to be what happens when we get back into the next cold, sun deprived season.

  3. I postponed my trip to London until October. I may have to quarantine on both ends of the trip. I’ll bite the bullet. Quarantining in London at an AirBnB will be difficult and expensive. But, I do have to see my daughter at a certain point. Maybe I can prove to everyone I have antibodies by that time and then wouldn’t have to quarantine.

  4. Wouldn’t you know it, weekend effect appears to have happened again. Numbers in U.S. will surpass yesterday by a sizable margin, I believe. Already surpassing yesterday’s numbers in Europe. Been told by a Dutch official that the weekend effect will be amplified due to Easter and Easter Monday in Europe. So, he expected the biggest numbers of the week to be reported tomorrow. We’ll see.

    1. Not surprised at that one bit.

My more immediate concern will be the Massachusetts numbers as I want
to see if we have peaked or at least plateaued. Not sure what to make
of any numbers today, but with tomorrow’s numbers we should know something.
Either that we have turned the corner or we are in deep shit. If you have
ever been by a pig farm, you’ll know what I mean.

      1. Old salty I do not think you will see a plateau around here for weeks . Peak is just starting to get going

  5. This comment is not an editorial but only an observation:

C19 was not the first, not the second, and not even the third story on NBC Boston’s noon news. It was visited 4th after news about a missing girl, the weather, and a tractor trailer rollover.

Nothing wrong with that, Just the first time I have seen C19 not be the first thing.

    1. I just think the weather is the concern now . Down this way there were multiple trees down throughout the different towns & some folks are still without power including parts of my neighborhood ( I have it’s a very big neighborhood.

      1. I definitely had no issue with the order of the stories. Even when something long-lasting and impactful is ongoing, we need variety. It’s good for the mind, and media can use it to its advantage. Because despite the importance of what’s going on, people can get very worn out mentally hearing the same thing over and over. Granted, not that the other stuff was “good” news, but it was ok to place 3 stories ahead of the big one in this case, just from a media standpoint. This isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and everybody knows it.

  6. TK, thanks for your observation. I’m glad they’re reporting other things, because other things are happening.

  7. The OSU football coach (I won’t mention his name here) is expecting his team to return to their facilities on May 1.

With regard to social distancing the Sports world (pro/semi-pro/college) still doesn’t get it imho!

  8. Time to call the governor again. I was disappointed in his start but then I don’t have the overwhelming responsibility he has. I can’t say enough positive about his actions other than that one small issue. It gives me confidence that the president will not force us to open before Baker is ready. And he made it clear it will be weeks.

As an aside, I literally laughed out loud at his response and body language when asked about state police heading to guard our supplies.

      1. Not good. Also not terrible. The fact that cases remained more or less the same is slightly encouraging. However, positivity rate is concerning. Let’s wait until tomorrow to get a better handle.

As a nation, today’s numbers have been very grim. A reality check, also for myself. I keep lulling myself into believing (hoping) we’ve turned the corner. I even told a friend yesterday that I thought we’d peaked as a nation in terms of daily deaths. Clearly we haven’t. We’re headed towards our worst day in terms of deaths. And, cases will likely approach 30,000 again. Just not good. All we have to do is look at Italy, France, and Spain to find out that plateauing (or whatever we’re doing) lasts a loooooong time. And, those 3 countries actually locked down. We really haven’t, certainly not nearly to the degree of France. As a result, our plateau will probably last even longer.

The 60k revised model prediction of total deaths may be in serious peril soon. In fact, I’ve kind of lost respect for one of the modelers for saying definitively that the U.S. would have zero daily deaths as soon as June 20th. That might happen. Heck, I might win the lottery. But it’s highly unlikely given that we have many outbreaks to contend with, each with their own timeline and characteristics. I’m very skeptical the entire nation is out of the woods by June. I think deaths will trickle in all summer every day.

We are managing it, sort of, in terms of healthcare capacity. It’s at or near the limit but appears not to be going above that. But, if that’s the only real positive to report that’s meager in the positive news department.

My latest Forbes piece on underreporting of Covid-19 deaths. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/04/14/underreporting-of-covid-19-deaths-in-the-us-and-europe/#5e4639b682d7

    1. Very likely if this is accurate.

I’d rather worry now about our country….the one the president wants open by May. I have a lot of words I can use now. There are two sets of motivation for folks right now…..political and medical.

      1. Targeted reopening of segments of the economy soon makes sense in some states. However, it should be noted that a state that everyone (myself included) thought could reopen soon, South Dakota, is now a hotspot. We’re too much in the thick of this epidemic to be considering reopening the way DJT wants to.

For many reasons I want the nation to reopen as soon as possible. But, my biggest fear is reopening too soon or in too liberal a way and then having to close down. That would be really bad for all involved.

        1. Reopening soon is not recommended by any respected medical person I am aware of. One comment today that really resonated was if anyone claims it is for the economy….and I understand you did not say that….reopening too soon will without fail set the economy even further back

Although your example of ND proves that it is way too soon to think anywhere is in the clear. Although plain old common sense should be enough

    2. I read the article. Seems they are struggling with the same problem we have. Fortunately we have governors who think clearly….in some instances. Hard for me to criticize another country with the mess we have made. I will definitely speak with my swedish friend. Thank Joshua

  9. Reopening in earnest in not likely to happen until some time in 2021. New antimalarial drug studies coming out of Sweden and France are not encouraging. It’s going to take drugs that are either curative or preventive to open the economy back up a to pre-COVID state.

  10. I like what Governor Cuomo of NY said at his press conference earlier today talking about reopening NY and saying you got to turn the faucet on slowly.

  11. My brother was tested today, his tests came in really quick and came in negative. We went biking the other day and he did not go 10 minutes without almost passing out. He is by far the healthiest out of all of us in my family so being winded on a bike within 10 minutes.

with that said I am nervous about the talks about opening things up too soon but also feel that Summer will likely be a good time with Late June maybe around the 4th being the time for New England to start opening up. People want to get things back to normal, I actually don’t want things back to the status quo. This virus has been one giant experiment for us environmental and climate scientists concerned for our planet. This pandemic showed several things for us. One Nature is so resilent ( we know this already) and if given the chance can rebound quickly. Water and air can improve. There was greater than 35% decrease in pollution here in the Northeast. Its been better in many other areas. In India, they can see the Mountains in some of the large cities in which with all the smog they can not usually see that. China have seen greater than 40% decrease in air pollution. Animals have gone to areas that people have not seen in over 15 years and longer. This showed that if we face a crisis, we can move our buts to fix it and if we don’t, pandemics, will only increase. George Carlin put it great, Planet Earth might be fine, but we won’t be able to live on it. This is a great time to try and go better when we try and get the US and the world started again. will we probably not.

    1. Hope your brother still self isolates. I’ve heard stories of people testing negative the first time and positive later. I’m sure he is negative but it doesn’t hurt to take extra care when you experience something like that.
