  1. Does anyone have a way to contact Arod. I know he doesn’t post when there is no snow. But he was active on covid advice. I worry because both he and his wife are literally front line. Well, I worry anyway; but this time it seems there is real reason.

  2. While here in Mass we are doing good with covid, else where like the place I am flying to possibly as early as mid July had 4 weeks of no active cases….. there are now 17 active cases. Many of which on St. Croix and on the map the area I live in doesn’t have any as the tourist don’t go there but its only a matter of time

  3. I’ve also wondered about Arod. I hope all is well.

I did some digging around to find out the following: In Florida, the testing results take about 4 to 5 days to report; new hospitalizations between 3 and 5 days, deaths about a 6 to 9 days. Today 11,445 people were reported to have tested positive. It appears 245 of them have been hospitalized so far. Back in early April when NY was reporting similar case numbers, about 700 out of 10,200 cases were hospitalized. Test positivity in NY was around 30%. It is about 15% in Florida.

The lower numbers of hospitalizations reflect lower test positivity (more mild cases being detected now in Florida than in NY in late March/early April), lower median age (about a 30 year difference) and therefore less susceptible to severe illness.

Though less alarming than NY at its peak, it’s still a very large number of hospitalizations to deal with. Similar story can be told for Alabama, South Carolina, Texas, and Arizona. My guess is the latter two states are a bit worse than Florida, as their test positivity is higher and median age of those testing positive is a little higher.

As far as other numbers, today is July 4th, I expect this weekend’s data to be messy and delayed. My guess is the Tuesday data will show a lot of backfill in many states.

    1. Just curious Joshua. How is Cuba doing through all this? As well as Bermuda?

I would also be curious about the Caribbean islands in general.

Frankly I haven’t heard anything about these locations either way since Covid-19 spread to the western world.

      1. Bermuda has done very well. Just 9 deaths, total. Testing rate is twice the U.S. Its public health system is excellent. In the past, it has dealt swiftly and effectively with cholera and Dengue fever outbreaks.

Cuba has done well compared to some of its Caribbean neighbors. Just 90 deaths, compared to 786 in the Dominican Republic. Both countries have the same testing rate, which is fairly low.

Being an authoritarian state with a solid public health system helps. I’m not saying this to defend Cuba. But, authoritarian states that prioritize public health (note, some authoritarian states do not prioritize public health) can and do enforce very strict lockdowns, isolation of cases, contact tracing, mask and physical distancing ordinances, etc … There is no reopen constituency in Cuba. Well, there may be one, but it was quashed as soon as it raised its voice.
