Tuesday April 23 2024 Forecast (7:38AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 23-27)

High pressure brings fair weather to our region today and a milder afternoon after a very chilly start. Clouds arrive tonight in advance of a warm front / cold front combo, trailing low pressure passing to our north, and this will result in our only unsettled day this week on Wednesday. Most of the rain shower activity with this system will be around Wednesday morning and midday, but with a secondary trough trailing the low as it moves by our longitude, another shower or even a possible thunderstorm can move through some areas mid afternoon to early evening. A shot of cool air and gusty wind Wednesday night and early Thursday, but high pressure cruises right in and Thursday afternoon is more tranquil, though the day is a cool one. High pressure parks right over the area Friday with dry, quiet weather, and significant temperature diurnal (difference from early-day low to afternoon high temperatures). This will take place again Saturday as the high center sits over us early then sinks to the south. A warm front approaching later Saturday will bring some high and mid level clouds to the region but the day will be a dry one, with any warm-frontal rainfall likely moving far north of our region late Saturday or Saturday night.

TODAY: A stratus cloud patch hangs around Boston’s southern suburbs briefly, otherwise sunshine today with some high clouds arriving later on. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes developing.

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Lows 40-47. Wind SE-S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy with rain showers likely through midday. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny mid afternoon on but an additional shower and/or thunderstorm may move through some areas later afternoon to early evening. Highs 56-63. Wind S 5-15 MPH, shifting to W by late-day.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 38-45. Wind W to NW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 48-55. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts early, but diminishing.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 33-40. Wind N under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sunny. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes developing.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 33-40. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 28 – MAY 2)

Typical spring set-up. We can get quite warm, at least in parts of the region, April 28-29, and lots of clouds and showers can be around on April 28 with the approach of a front from the west. Also, another boundary (a back-door front) may sneak down from the northeast sometime April 29-30 when and ocean air flow can make us quite cool and when combined with another trough coming in from the west, unsettled as well. Conditions may be slow to improve the first couple days of May if we get into this pattern as well, but that part is low confidence, so please check upcoming updates for more.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 3-7)

Overall pattern looks dry but may turn more unsettled later in the period. Temperatures above normal early period, then a cooling trend.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.
My day started out at 37 here in JP. 🙂 One degree higher than yesterday morning.

  2. Thanks, TK.

There are no easy playoff series in hockey.

Toronto has perhaps the most prolific goal-scorer and game-changer in the league in Austin Matthews. I will admit that I like watching him play. Tavares can be darn good, too.

Also, the Maple Leafs are due, as in overdue. Does it mean they’ll win this series? No. Not necessarily. But for the life of me I do not understand the sports radio `pundits’ (fools is a better word) who proclaim a series over after 1 game (which they all did after Saturday’s game), or who make it seem like aiming for a particular 1st round opponent is a good thing (which some did). It’s not. It never has been. All teams are tough. It’s also why winning a Stanley Cup is THE most difficult thing to do in sports, far more difficult than winning a Superbowl, for example.

By the way, though I’m not a basketball fan I do read analyses of the various series that are happening. You get a sense that locally and nationally commentators make a similar mistake: They judge a series by the 1st game’s outcome. How utterly bizarre, in my view. Granted, in basketball it is more of a sure thing to have the 1 seed beat the 8 seed. But no series – yes, that includes the Heat-Celtics – is over after 1 game.

  3. Thanks for checking, Vicki. 26F north of Sutton on 4/23. That’s impressive. Look for it to possibly get even colder within the next 60 hours or so.

What I find a little strange is that people often dress according to the calendar and not the weather. While doing my shopping early this morning, I noticed a lot of people in shirts and even t-shirts. Meanwhile, I was wearing a fairly warm coat (not a winter coat, but still). If I wore a t-shirt in what was then 46F weather, I’d be very chilled and uncomfortable.

    1. Sorry. Wasn’t north of sutton. Was in north sutton.

I’ve been sitting out on the deck with just a long sleeve tee. It would be short sleeves normally at 62 but there is a stiff breeze

    1. Agreed !

High temp > Max sun angle at solar noon.

      I approve.

Yesterday, max temp was close to 5F below max sun angle
(55F for a high vs 60 degree max sun angle) Drives me nuts in Spring.

    1. Awe inspiring!! Such Majestic birds! Absolutely stunning photos!
      Thank you!!!

      Send them to the news!!!!!

      1. I don’t care how many times I see one of these amazing creatures, I feel goosebumps

There is a video. My SIL sometimes forgets he has a filter. I took photos from daughters video.

        I’ll post the video. It’s not terrible. Just …well, I don’t know what 🙂

  4. Thanks TK.

Down to 30F in Coventry this AM and 32F yesterday AM. Quite the recovery in temps this afternoon though…BDL had topped out at 68F last I checked.

Back in the freezer tomorrow night…. much of interior CT, RI and SE MA are now under a Freeze Watch for tomorrow night/Thursday AM for temps as low as 27F. No Watches north of those areas though, I assume not because it isnt going to get that cold but because the growing in northern areas hasnt started yet.

      1. By the way, you never get this kind of temperature spread in Britain or the Netherlands. In fall and winter there isn’t much of a difference between daytime and nighttime temps, with a typical January day being 41F during the day and 35F at night. April is typically the month with the greatest possible spread, which happens to be occurring this week: 53F during the day and 36F at night (most April days have less spread). In summer the spread often diminishes, with a typical day/night being 67F/54F.

  5. We had a good time skiing up at Sugarloaf ME this past weekend. They were down to 3 lifts operating but still 110 trails open as those lifts access about 90% of the mountain. Plenty of natural snow cover still to the tune of 2-3 feet in the woods on the upper mountain. Not much natural snow near the base but the snowmaking trails on the lower mountain still had good coverage. They are staying open there until May 5.

It was chilly for this time of year, even up there, and it snowed for awhile Sat. AM and again at night. There was about an inch of snow near the summit Sunday morning. Winterlike conditions near the top and spring skiing/corn snow on the lower mountain. Here are a few photos:

    1. Thanks for sharing. Probably better skiing up there in April than in January.

It’s going to be different next year. I sincerely believe we’ll have a more `traditional’ winter. Part of it is wishful thinking, I know.

      1. Hard to believe I was standing there taking that last picture just two days ago – a very deep winter look – while today I am looking out the window at green grass and tulips. Will be savoring that image for the next 7 months until I have the chance to see something like that in person again. I know you can relate!

Did you hear anything back on your Quebec City pursuit?

  6. Mark, thanks for asking about QC. Haven’t heard from them other than a standard automated reply that my application was received. My chances are small. But I figure I might as well try. Crazier things have happened. In 1995 I never in a million years thought I’d get a fellowship at Harvard. But it happened.

    1. Hey it’s worth a try. Brush up on your French just in case!

QC is great. I have been there a few times but the last time was New Years Eve 20+ years ago. I remember two things from that trip:

      1. It snowed and was frigid (didnt get much above 0F)

      2. New Years Eve dinner – I had picked a French restaurant because I liked the looks of many of the items on the menu. However when we got there and sat down, we were informed it was a fixed 5 course meal with no options. I will never forget the stuff that came out…..a plate of steaming hot cheeses, duck foie gras, Emu carpaccio, venison for the main course, and some pastry with assorted fruits for dessert. The last three were OK. The first two I could not eat. In fact I nearly threw up on the tablecloth when I smelled the steaming hot cheeses served to the table next to us. I dont mind many cheeses but whatever this was smelled rancid and was extremely pungent. Needless to say, it was a memorable meal… 🙂
