DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 1-5)
August begins with a fair weather day, courtesy a weak ridge of high pressure over our region. We will see an increase in high cloudiness as the day goes on, and plentiful clouds will fill the sky tonight, though without a rain threat. Sunday will also continue the theme of more cloudiness and less sun than today, but again I believe any rain threat is absent. Humidity levels will be elevated, though not oppressive, this weekend, at least until Sunday night when they start to increase further ahead of an approaching cold front. This front ambles its way across our region on Monday, and while that day can feature intervals of sun, it also carries a strong chance of quite a few showers and thunderstorms triggered by the front. During this time, low pressure develops and cuts off over the eastern Ohio Valley. Previously, I envisioned this system causing a very showery episode around Tuesday into Wednesday of next week, but trends are for a weaker system which does send moisture our way, with the help of high pressure off the East Coast. But this set-up would favor more of an afternoon scattered shower and thunderstorm occurrence those days, with continued warm and humid early August weather.
TODAY: Sunshine becomes filtered to limited with time. Highs 78-85. Dew point 60+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Lots of clouds / limited sun. Highs 79-86. Dew point 60s. Wind S 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Areas of fog. Lows 63-70. Dew point 60s. Wind S 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely. Highs 74-81. Dew point near 70. Wind S up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. A shower possible. Areas of fog. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind S to SW up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible. Highs 77-84. Dew point 65+. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 66-73. Dew point 65+. Wind S under 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. A shower or thunderstorm possible in the afternoon. Highs 79-86. Dew point 65+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 6-10)
Continuation of a more classic summer pattern with high pressure off the Atlantic Coast, moderate to high humidity, and a few shower and thunderstorm chances while most of the time is rain-free. Potential for a disturbance from the west to enhance shower and thunderstorm chances on August 6. Temperatures near to above normal.
DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 11-15)
A general west to east flow should take a couple of troughs / fronts through with shower and t-storm chances, but with majority of the time featuring fair weather. Temperatures slightly variable but averaging around normal.
So here is the complete summary / plan after my surgical consult…
The procedure I will have is a combination mitral valve repair and a MAZE (which is an ablation procedure), so I am getting 2 things done. Operation is about 4 hours when you combine both procedures. I will be under general anesthesia, so I will be asleep and have no memory of the process. They put you on a heart/lung machine and stop the heart for the work, then reverse the process after it’s over, and can even test the valve fix before they finish. Once I am awake they will perform another echocardiogram to make sure things look stable. I spend ~2 days in ICU then ~3 days in a regular room to rest and start recovery. If that goes well I go home and can resume walking, using stairs, etc., but I won’t be able to lift anything over a few pounds for several weeks, and I won’t be able to drive for 4 to 6 weeks and will be out of work for about that amount of time as well. Several check-ups will take place during that time frame and I will begin a physical therapy routine to build strength back up. After a little time doing that, and once I can drive and lift things, life is “normal” again.
This is not an emergency situation, so I have time to decide when I want it done. Option 1 is to do it in late September / early October and recover during the remainder of this year. Option 2 is to do it right after the holiday season and recover during the winter. I am leaning toward Option 2 for several reasons.

Last evening Pete was talking about thunderstorms for several days next week and if my hearing is still working, I swear he said that it included some “BIG” thunderstorms. I guess We’ll find out.
Well, it’s hard to forecast “big” (which I assume means severe) t-storms well in advance. But it is generally the case that if you have several days that include t-storm chances, some of them are going to be on the strong side, it being the nature of such activity. 🙂

I was just about to post that, with the turn of a calendar page, summer is back.
It may be perspective or remembering incorrectly or personal bias, but I always thought that July was the hottest month, but August was the most humid.

I’ve said before that August was always the better of the two months to go to Humarock. But with wind (and it didn’t have to be strong) off of the water both from the ocean in front of the house and the south river or is it the north river at the back of the house, it was much more comfortable in August than July

FWIW, since late June, early July, when we had that very warm/hot stretch, these are some of the consistently higher projected heights I have seen on a CFS run in a while.
And we already know we are looking at a relatively warm, humid stretch, so, need to see more runs of the CFS looking like that for pattern possibilities ….. leaning towards an above avg temp month for August.

For July, per Norton NWS climate data, the 4 major southern New England climate OBs basically came in close to avg temps for July, impressive considering how warm the month started.
The anomolies were +0.6F (Logan), +0.1F, -0.1F and -0.4F. I was a bit lazy matching the last 3 anomolies to their locations, but I think it was Worcester, Providence and Hartford, respectively.

Even with a sea breeze today, Logan is at 81.
With the nice sunshine, ocean temp has risen a bit up to 67 currently.
The Red Sox have allowed 408 runs so far this season. That’s the fewest of any MLB team.
They have been generally strong there all season.
The big problem for the first 2 1/2 months was they just were not hitting the ball and scoring any runs.
