DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 28 – NOVEMBER 1)
High pressure maintains control of our weather through the weekend. The only “interruption” will be two frontal boundaries that pass by during Friday, the first in the pre-dawn hours with some cloudiness and perhaps a sprinkle of rain, and the second later Friday with little fanfare other than a breeze and the introduction of a slightly cooler air mass after a prior warm-up. The weekend, which is one hour longer due to changing the clocks back 1 hour at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, will be dominated by high pressure, including Halloween evening which will be dry and cool with light winds for outdoor shenanigans.
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 55-62. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 32-39. Wind SW under 10 MPH.
THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 62-69. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 43-50. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Sun / cloud mix. Highs 65-72. Wind SW shifting to NW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 33-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 26-33 except 34-41 coastal & urban areas. Wind calm.
SUNDAY: Sun and high clouds. Highs 56-63. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.
DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 2-6)
Trend has been for the disturbances in the pipeline to look less and less impressive, and therefore associated rain chances to become minimal for November 2 & 4, to the point we may be looking at just fair weather and above normal temperatures as a ridge of high pressure becomes dominant next week.
DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 7-11)
Medium range guidance trends have switched to a trough passing through with unsettled early period, and perhaps another late period, with fair weather otherwise. Taking all this with salt grains as medium range guidance performance has been iffy. Doesn’t look overly chilly, and doesn’t look overly stormy.
Good morning and thank you TK
37 up from 36. I thought it might have gotten a little colder than that, but nope.
Ocean: 56
Wordle: 5. After 3 guesses I had 4 letters and 2 obvious choices . Of course I chose the wrong one with guess 4. That’s how wordle rolls.
Since I posted the above Ocean has dropped to 55. I see it pretty much leveling off over the next few weeks, perhaps dropping 1 degree over that period. If we want even a chance for snow this WInter that Ocean temperature has to drop considerably. Yes, it is still early, but prospects for colder weather any time soon don’t look too promising.
Nice 5, JpDave.
The nearby airport down here reported 32F just before sunrise.
Thanks Tom. I would have rathered the 4.
Someone will get it in 3 today.
Yes, I agree.
Nice 5. Bit of an odd word
Thanks TK !
Wordle: 4
I had the same exact experience JpDave had on Wordle, but luckily had used the other option letter #1 could have been in an earlier guess, so that helped out.
Nice 4 Tom. You made a wiser choice than I. 🙂
Super 4!
In Wordle, I “missed it by that much” on guess 3 and got it in 4.

Wonderful
Very nice !
Thank you TK!
Wordle: A lucky 3 for sure.
Excellent!
And There it is, the expected 3. Great job!
Excellent, Sue !
Wow. Fantastic 3!!
Thank you, TK.
There is a ton of talk in the (social) media about the impacts of El Nino. Some of it is serious and rational and focuses on historic precedent. I like these discussions. But I’ve seen a tendency of some prognosticators to put blinders on and give El Nino a disproportionate impact, almost as if it’s the only consideration, in my view, this can lead to ignoring the other factors that go into long-range forecasts.
What has struck me this month – and we’re in an El Nino already, correct? – is our temperature profile. It has NOT been a warm month. Correct? I haven’t checked the data. But based on observations and experiencing as many Octobers as I have, we’ve actually had a remarkably cool (and consistent) temperature profile at night with a fairly large differential between day- and nighttime temps (typical during patterns like the one we’re experiencing). The consistent temps in the 20s in some inland locations – and not just NNE – suggest to me that whatever is happening this month isn’t warmer than normal.
Of course, if a zonal pattern emerges things could change. I get it. But what happens if that zonal pattern doesn’t take shape quite the way many think it will?
Quite true in the northeast.
Check out slides 30 and 31, I believe it is and it shows much of the rest of the country has been a lot warmer, both the past 30 and 90 days.
For October, Boston and the 3 other major climate stations for southern New England are 1-2F above avg temp anomolies, right in line with what you described.

The Wordle gods shined on me today. – Wordle in 2!! My initial guess left 19 word possibilities. For some unknown reason, I chose the correct word with second guess.
That’s amazing!
Superb Bill, Congrats !!
Incredible!! Very Well done!!!
Fantastic! 5 here, same story as Jp
Welcome aboard the 5 car. Happy to have the company.
Great 5, Tjammer!
Nice 5, Tjammer !
Impressive 2. Wow
39/29 now
Thank you, Tom, for your post.
Interesting, as I wouldn’t have thought Boston is above average by 1 to 2 degrees (F) this month. But there has been the large discrepancy between day- and nighttime temperatures.
I’m really curious about what will happen the remainder of this fall and winter. No doubt, El Nino will have a considerable impact. I’m just not convinced the Northeast will be as warm as some weather folks are indicating. We shall see.
Indeed, we shall see. I don’t what another horrific Snow season. Yes, last year was decent, but the previous 3 were a total bust.
I think TK gave us a hint yesterday that “perhaps” this Winter won’t be the total gloom and doom predicted by many.
Well, yes ….. sort of
It would take 1 storm to dump 15-20″ to get Boston anyway to 1/3 to 2/5 of the way to their season total.
And a couple 1-2 day arctic blasts that are progressive, to accumulate 4-6 really cold/frigid days.
I don’t think its going to be 50F everyday with 0″ of snow.
But, everything the atmosphere has been showing the last 3-5 months makes me thing the majority of time, say 80% of the time, perhaps, its going to be warmer than average and very little snow falling.
But, a complete non – winter? I know 2012 was one, but that is really difficult for the atmosphere to do, even though, it did, in fact do that. But, I’d call that an extreme outlier. 🙂
Killington a few minutes ago after they turned the snow guns off.

I had nothing for guess one and by third guess had one correct location and a second incorrect location. How the word popped into my head, I have no ideas. But love when that happens.
Wordle 4
Excellent!
❤️
Yay, Vicki !
Well done!
The game is an interesting combination of frustration and joy. 🙂
Thank you, TK. Halloween is looking great

According to the mainstream media, El Niño is the direct cause for the massive King Tides on both coasts.
King tides are astronomical events related to the alignment of earth, moon and sun. On the West Coast, this is intensified by El Niño and a slow-moving band of warm water known as a Kelvin wave.
Yes, I heard it explained pretty much in that way. I find it interesting that the waves are much more pronounced on the West Coast as opposed the East Coast.
Still, much flooding on both coasts.

Watching and interesting series on Netflix entitled Lupin It is French, dubbed in English but only a fair job of that. S+Dubbing could be much better. But aside from that it is pretty good.
Sounds interesting. My maiden name was Lupien.
Very close. I find it most enjoyable. It is a little different. 🙂
Thanks TK

The dew point is certainly coming up even if the temperature is down from yesterday. Much cloudiness about.
Medium range hints drier even for what it was showing as a more active period after this week …….. so that trend continues.
No changes to today’s blog after reviewing 12z INFOOOOOOOOO!
Boston.com now has a paywall. So many news and newspaper sites do nowadays. I subscribe to 3 bi-weekly periodicals (physical copies), 2 newspapers (online) and 2 websites for health news. And then there are of course all the various subscriptions needed to have internet/wi-fi, use applications like Word, Adobe, antivirus, etc … Every year the price of the subscriptions goes up, sometimes by a lot. It’s kind of getting out of hand and taking a sizable chunk of each person’s income.
I don’t have an issue with some subscriptions. But I find the boston.com subscription and also Forbes (for whom I write) REALLY annoying. My articles on Forbes are plastered with ads. There are so many ads that it crowds out the article and looks terrible. Boston.com has lots of ads, too, though they’re not quite as intrusive. Still, it begs the question, why all these paywalls? I just don’t buy the conventional wisdom that the ad revenue doesn’t adequately support the sites or publications.
Anything with a paywall, I say byebye. There are enough ads. They don’t need me to give them any more. 😉
Totally agree.
If it weren’t for ad blockers I would probably give up on using the internet entirely. 🙂
Agree with you both
