    1. Euro looks hot and dry through the weekend while the GFS is cooler (though still warm) and more unsettled, especially in the Sunday time period. Took a look at the accuweather extended (for what it’s worth) and it indicates temps in the 80’s all three days over Mem. day weekend with a chance for a few showers Sat and Sun. However, I think their extended forecast is pretty much based right off the GFS.

  1. Does anyone have any knowledge of fischer cats? I just heard what I am fairly certain is a fischer cat. I know it’s back in the area. I heard what sounded like another animal first and then what sounded like the cat going in for the kill. But I’m concerned that they are supposed to be nocturnal and is it a bad sign it’s out at 10:00 am?

    1. A fisher cat sounds like a women screaming bloody murder. Usually in the middle of the night in the woods. If you see any nocturnal animal in the middle of the day its usually a bad thing. We had a fisher cat living in the woods behind my house last year. It sent chill down your spine to hear.

    2. We have the same thing in the woods behind our house and I heard that characteristic blood curdling scream just a couple nights ago. I have never heard it in the day though. Watch out if you are outside…I doubt they would approach you but you never know if they are sick or injured and you get too close!

      1. Thank you both for your comments !!!

It was the typical cat type cry at first and then I heard what sounded like a bird or duck panic type squack and then the building – almost frenzied – cry of what I am sure is the fisher. We had one for years and as you said it was terrifying when it wakened you at night but I never heard it in the day.

What worries me is that there are tons of little kids out playing here all the time and if it’s rabid I’m not so sure it wouldn’t go after a human.

    3. They will attack anything stay away and bring in your pets. They are really annoying sounding and have been known to take down deer. I have been keeping track of them and go out sometimes at night with the neibor and she is always saying we need to stay in the boat. I did see one before but from a distance. they can be more deadly than a black bear.

        1. Good article, Mark Thanks so much. Doesn’t make me very happy since my husband takes the dog out – he’s a cairn and he’d be just about fisher size.

      1. oh no Matt – I had a feeling you’d know a lot about them…….but should it be out during the day? Have you seen that before?

        1. yes I have on rare accasions in the woods in darker areas. Also when it has been wet out they come out durring the day.

          1. It was bright and cool today. And apparently Framingham has become wild kingdom. Our neighbor said there was a fox in our yard last night but it was grey and not red

  2. Seems like for the past month, there has been a weekly repeating pattern in the weather. Decent start to the week but quickly becoming unsettled lasting through midweek, then decent end of the week/weekends. Much like the pattern that set up this past winter with cold and dry weekends, esp. sundays, with warming and unsettled weather by midweek.

    1. I’m trying to remember back to the winter I’d like to forget – just kidding. If nothing else I have old man winter to thank for an unusually glorious January at the beach – or maybe Coastal and John and Tom arranged for that. Speaking of which………John?????

Anyway, I think you are right, AceMaster. And if not, what a great way to take the blame off the golfer and husband of golfer in the group 🙂

Someone else is a big golfer here too. Is it JJ?

      1. Yes, what happened to John these days? I haven’t seen a posting from him in weeks. I hope he is ok…although many have left here for awhile until winter returns (i.e., Joshua and OS).

        1. I was thinking about Joshua yesterday when we were talking about areas that plow snow well. I wanted some input from him on NH and if they still do the exceptional job they used to. And with the Tstorms I’m really going to miss OS’s posts – although I miss him being here period.

  3. What is going on these days with so many wild animals roaming around neighborhoods in the immediate suburbs? I live in Dorchester and the “wildest” I have seen are racoons and skunks. However, there was a coyote running around near the Ted Williams Tunnel in downtown Boston not too long ago. Perhaps it is time for the federal government to allow states to go back to active hunting again. I can understand animals need to be protected, but there may be way too many of these creatures nowadays and for some reason they are attacking humans and anything else with a heartbeat. It is clear that they do not fear anything anymore and are constantly under “attack” mode on sight.

Also, just the other night I smelled skunk for the first time this year. During the winter of 2010-11 I smelled skunk just about every time I shoveled and yet this past winter, I never smelled or seen a skunk as warm as it was. Can anyone explain??

      1. Seriously…animal behavior is starting to get more bizzare the past few years. Back in the day, they couldn’t get away from humans fast enough.

    1. We are encroaching on all of their territory. It’s our own fault. Many are just plain gone. We rarely see racoons and skunks in our yard and our house backs up to woods. We used to have pheasant but I can’t remember the last time I saw one.

  4. I’ll take the rain during the week as long as the weekends are nice.
Vicki yes I do golf. I am okay at.

    1. Welcome home Hadi…hope Samir settles in nicely and starts sleeping right through the night for you. 🙂

    2. Welcome home Hadi – how is Samir adjusting. And how is his big brother adjusting? And most important – how is mom? and you too of course!!!

  5. Ocean temps are slowly climbing, ocean temps range from 60 degrees just south of RI to 50 degrees north of Boston, Boston sea surface temps are around 55 degrees.

  6. Holy Toledo….look at the 12z EURO now for Sat and Sun of Memorial Day Weekend. Looks like it builds another “super-ridge”, and the 850 mb temps are even warmer than the 0z run. If I’m reading correctly, Sunday’s 850 mb temps would be about 20C. With late May sun, full mixing and a westerly surface wind…….mid 90s….Ok, I know, a week away, it will end up cloudy, drizzly and 55F.

    1. It really has been good ! It will be interesting to see what the next 3 to 4 days show for Memorial Day Weekend. We are camping and will have a lake about 100 ft from our site, so I guess I’m hoping for summer like weather.

        1. Sure thing Vicki. My ideal summer day is sunny and 85F with dewpoints in the mid 50s and overnight lows of 55F to 60F.

  7. Not that it affects New England directly….however, Alaska is warming up. Barrow, AK is currently 34F….first time above freezing in several months….on the Arctic Village, AK web cam picture….the snow is melting quickly and there’s increasing amounts of bare ground and Fairbanks, AK is a nice mild 60F. The residents up there must be enjoying this weather, as Alaska actually had a fairly cold winter, even by their standards.

    1. Oh gosh I forgot when ur bday is. Or did I know. Sometimes when Ive been away I miss posts. And we will all wish the rain away

  8. Thanks all!! Adjusting fine so far. The sleep is always the #1 stress otherwise it’s like riding a bike.

    1. After her second baby was born last march my oldest said she had never realized how easy one child was :). Although she also admits #2 is a far easier adjustment than #1 :). Enjoy!

  9. Please save Paul Watsohttp://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/2012/05/17/german-prosecutors-late-motion-gives-german-ministers-more-time-to-free-captain-paul-watson-1378n he is one of the few people that care about our oceans.

  10. Sort of weather related. I am looking for a place where I can dine on the water in Marblehead. I think today is going to be a great day!

    1. I would recommend the Barnacle, great seafood. Although we will have a sea breeze going by dinner time.

  11. seniors have gotten out of our afternoon classes and are going to be playing a game of kickball its going to be so nice outside 🙂

    1. I wonder if my employer would mind if I suggested we all go out an play kickball this afternoon. Enjoy it Matt….the high school years were the best!

  12. EURO continues theme of a big ridge with a bubble of very hot early summer air. The forecasted 850 mb temps continue to be unbelievable and today’s placement of the ridge aloft is interesting. Instead of it being a bit further east, which would have a typical surface type Bermuda High, it’s a little further west, where the extreme warmth would rotate into our region from the west and even northwest.

  13. getting a senior award , and now I have been invited to a meeting which people and teachers are saying is about senior scholarship night. This day can not get any better… Oh wait it has heard that math teacher is out. 😀

  14. honestly will like more clouds this upcoming week. Highs this weekend in the high 70s work wonders to warm up the pool but it does not help when low temps go below 50s. Once the air temp goes down below 50s the pool starts loosing it head. the 70 degree temps this weekend will be folowed by more cloudy conditions with times of sun. temps look to be in the low 70s which still warms up the pool and then night time lows do not go below 50. Not to mention it will be muggy. So Memorial day weekend will be warm as well and this will work out perfectly to keep my pool water temp in the upper 60s to low 70s.

  15. Tom do you know of any hotels in your area on the ocean? I have a friend whose daughter works in Pembroke and she wants to stay at a hotel nearby next weekend. Thank you!

    1. In Marshfield, right overlooking the ocean, just pass Brant Rock Village is the Fairview Inn and in Cohasset, right on the harbor, is the Cohasset Harbor Inn…..This is a guess, but given location, I’d think their rates might be towards the higher side of average. I also believe if you google Fairview Inn and Cohasset Harbor Inn, both Inn’s websites will come up.

      1. Thanks Tom – I thought of Cohasset – My oldest’s wedding reception was at the Atlantica – but thought it might be too far. I keep forgetting about the Fairview. That would be close to Pembroke and as you said more in the “reasonable” rate range.

  16. It looks like the 12z GFS has latched onto the Euro’s thinking and is showing very warm to hot weather for Memorial Day weekend (850 mb temps reaching 20 deg C in some locations, esp just west and south of SNE!) The Euro’s forecast for 850 mb temps next weekend across SNE is 12-14C on Sat, 16-18C on Sun and 17-19C on Monday. If my translation is correct, this would be 80’s on Saturday and temps exceeding 90 in most areas away from the coast on Sun and Mon. TK, would you concur with those assumptions?

    1. At the moment, maybe tweaking back slightly due to slightly wetter topsoil making more work needed to heat the ground, but overall yes I agree (assuming model correctness).

  17. I do believe we have a good chance of rain Tue/Wed, I’m not sure how much as there are alot of players that need to be worked out. Also I find that if we did have a severe weather season it would be June 1st-July 31st, and it’s almost that time.

  18. If you could have the temp stay the same all the time what would it be? Mine is 60 degrees 🙂

    1. I guess I do like the seasons, cause I’m having a really hard time settling on a number. 🙂

      1. I could not have just one number. I love the seasons. I was standing in my family room yesterday looking out at the deck and the yard with everything so green thinking what a spectacular time of year

If I absolutely had to have one temp it would be one where it could snow

  19. Good afternoon all!

Sorry for the lack of commenting. Tied up with some errands related to a family wedding coming up in 2 weeks.

Going to update the blog quickly in a few. Very short discussion. Met’s (pro, amateur, etc) feel free to add your own thoughts about the upcoming pattern!
