Record Heat Today, Thunderstorms Friday

3:05AM

High pressure aloft and a west northwest wind at the surface will be the perfect setup for record heat today, along with significant humidity, though it may become slightly drier than yesterday. It should be mainly dry though a fewΒ  isolated air mass thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, especially in southern NH to northeastern MA in the evening or night.

Friday, a cold front will approach from the west, but it will still be hot and humid during the day. Thunderstorms will develop during the day as this front pushes into the hot and humid air mass. The coverage and strength of the storms is not completely known, but there will be the potential for strong to possibly severe storms in some locations. The storm threat will continue for at least part of Friday night.

Saturday, the front will have pushed through but be just offshore, with lingering clouds for at least the first half of the day, and still the threat of a few more showers and thunderstorms (though do not look for them to be widespread). The air will be somewhat cooler.

Sunday, a sliver of high pressure will provide a dry and comfortably mild to warm day, the pick of the weekend.

The first half of next week will be somewhat unsettled and cooler as upper level low pressure dominates the weather.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

  1. Thanks TK.
Thunderstorm Index at a 2 tomorrow since there is the threat of some severe weather. I don’t see this as a widespread severe weather outbreak at this point. The biggest threats look to be heavy rain and strong gusty winds. No matter what happens with the thunderstorm activity this will break the heat.

  2. Thanks tk. Leaving pembroke this morning at two am and it was off to a warm start. I am wondering if we could hitt 100 today in many spots. Have a nice day everybody, stay cool.

  3. Thanks TK. Could the showers happen at any point during the day sat? Will be interesting to see if we hit 100. Just a bit warmer today than same time yesterday it seems and a bit stronger breeze

    1. They could but they favor the morning hours. And as for 100 today, the more the wind is NW the better shot we have at some triple digits…

      1. TK – I probably should know the answer to this, but I am going to ask it anyway. πŸ™‚ With this heat and humidity, shouldn’t the winds be out of the southwest? I thought that was the warm-weather direction.

  4. Currently 86 degrees on Nantucket at the moment, Looks like they will be hitting 90 by days end.

  5. That’s warm for Nantucket. It’s 88.9 here so just about 5 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. I’m rooting for 100………….sorry for those who don’t have AC – you are welcome to come here πŸ™‚ I made some killer root beer bbq chicken last night and a great potato/tomato salad I’d be happy to share !

    1. To add to the people who don’t have AC I feel for the people who have to work outside on days
like today landscapers, construction workers etc.

        1. I feel for you too and was happy to hear that you have AC to go home to. And ugh on the roof for pigeon.

      1. I absolutely agree – I wonder if extreme heat or extreme cold is more difficult for those who work outside or if it depends on what the person likes.

        1. They came to replace my gas pipe from the street to the house today. I wondered if they would still come in the heat but they did. They left the part they have to do in the street itself until a cooler day, but they did the rest of it up to the house and were here for about 4 hours with alot of water, etc. to keep themselves hydrated.

These are the days they hate their job, but I am sure the days when it is nice outweigh these.

          1. Wow a long job in this heat. Hasn’t stopped my husband from golfing though although he likes this weather.

          2. I was surprised when the masons showed up yesterday to repair my chimney in the attic crawlspace. It must have been at least 120 degrees up there! I gave them a large fan and lots of ice cold water, along with the option to reschedule. They were thankful for the fan, the water but declined my offer to reschedule the job. My heart sure went out to them!

            1. oh my gosh. I wanted to get something down from our attic yesterday and didn’t have the heart to even ask my husband to go up there for the few minutes it would take. That is one nasty place to be in the heat when it’s a small attic.

  6. Tom or anyone who can answer, we are planning on taking the kids to hummarock first thing in the morning, around 6 or 7. Do I need a permit or pay for parking at that time? Wanted to go early before the heat and crowds. Then we plan on going to that terrific breakfast place Vicki suggested.

    1. If you go over the bridge and then straight toward the ocean, there is a parking lot on the left (when you cannot go any further) that costs $5.00/day I believe. You cannot park in the large lot across from the Post Office without a permit.

It’s all rocks on the public beach this year so far. Beware!!!

If you can get one of their chicken parm dinners to go at the Corner Cafe and please tell them Vicki from Framingham says hi and we’ll be seeing them in August πŸ™‚ Thanks

    2. Depending on how long you are staying on the beach, you can park in any of the spaces along the street for an hour. You do exactly what we did – very early on the beach and off before sun is too hot.

  7. I think were going to here some reports of temps reaching the century mark across SNE.
We break the heat tomorrow with a front with showers and storms and a few could be strong to possibly severe. I don’t expect a widespread severe weather outbreak.

  8. As of 11:00 am dewpoints all over NE are held in check below 70 (mid-upper 60’s). Surprisingly Boston dp is “only” 65…usually they would have the highest.

At least in extemely cold temps, one can layer up as much as possible. In heat, one can only remove but so much. We humans can’t remove that final layer…our skin. πŸ™‚

    1. The NW winds as opposed to the usual heatwave SW winds are possibly keeping those dp’s under 70 for now.

  9. just hit 93 in Walpole, dew point of 67, lower than yesterday but still considered oppressive

  10. In terms of humidity were in the humid to very humid range on the comfort index. 70 and over it is oppressive and feeling like the tropics. Speaking of tropics 1st hurricane of the season with Chris but thankfully its a fish storm and won’t affect anyone but the fish.

    1. A dear friend of my in-laws had a husband who captained a ship/barge for LandSea or something like that. She would get so upset when someone said a storm was over the fish – her husband was out there. Both are gone now but it always brings back her memory when someone makes that comment – thanks for the smile JJ

  11. Backed off a degree to 92 in Walpole. Air seems to be moving more today. Doesnt feel as hot to me as yesterday for some reason. Might be that yesterday’s heat was such a shock to the system, getting used to it now

    1. AceMaster – I was just out putting some water on plants that are now in the shade for the day and I thought the same thing. Either I am used to it or it is more comfortable. There is definitely more of a breeze but it just felt nice where last night we ate on the deck but were in no hurry to linger today I sat for a bit and watched my grandson in his small pool

  12. A backdoor cold front has past through most of Maine, I’m really wishing it gets to at least northeast Mass.

  13. NWS updated that winds have shifted slightly thus allowing a weak sea breeze that should develope this afternoon. I would think temps have come close to max at Logan at this point, we shall see

    1. I’m laughing at myself because I read the first as develop!

I guess that means no record broken today either πŸ™

    1. Hi Hadi, I think the record was 95 today. That is what I am seeing on Weather Undergroud. I did hear on BZ that Logan hit 96 between 2 and 3.

    1. I hadn’t noticed that Longshot. First hurricane of the season in the Atlantic. They have the disturbance in the Gulf up to 50% now for chance of development. This morning was 30%.

      1. There was a breeze yesterday morning in boston, i felt it got hotter as the day went on. Was in boston this morning at 3 am and it was warm. And of course took of from there. Just my thought felt way hotter today. Back at work at 3am tomorrow and will try to get a tempature reading.

      2. Odd that both Acemaster and I thought yesterday was hotter – unless I misread acemasters comment which is also likely πŸ™‚

  14. Very, very warm on the campground….but the lake is nice and chilly from the past week’s weather. We had a bunch of cumulus today around the noon hour, but they disappeared around 2 pm and its been blazing away since. In the middle of last night, a ventilating breeze kicked in, which helped out. Hot start to the camping season, but looking at TK’s forecast, I see more reasonable weather is ahead. Take it easy all !

  15. According to harvey yesterday felt hotter. Working outside i think today was hotter, of course just my guess.

    1. Imthink it may be that I got used to it too. Although the breeze was a fair amount stronger here today.

  16. A bunch of “harmless” cumulous clouds popped up around Boston around noon and were out the rest of the afternoon. With the sun coming in and out, it seemed to temper the intense sun some. There was still a new record for Boston at 96. I do wonder though, if we had full sunshine for the entire day if temps would have been closer to, if not right at 100 degrees.

    1. Philip it was full at work today all day mostly in the longwood medical Γ‘rea. Oh how i like the summer sights.

    2. Hi Philip u mentioned something yesterday about can hardly wait and neither can I but even if they weren’t the team to win a championship the Patriots have been and always will be my favorite sports team in New England and anywhere lol πŸ™‚

      1. Me too I used to be a big NASCAR fan but not so much in the past. I do love the start of the football season. We make a huge deal out of Sunday food and celebration and then the game.

    1. My son in law says he has ability to be best player ever played. Great speed. Throwing ok. Needs work but has amazing ability. I’m quoting. He’s the one who started buying grok rookie cards long before grok was big and who has a ton of harpers rookie cards. Hope you don’t mind my answering

    2. Rg3 will c, he will probably be an impact player, the redskins are a better team than they were last year, I think they go 9-7 πŸ™‚

  17. Yesterday felt hotter because the dew point was a little higher along with the heat index. The dew point was just slightly low but still on the very humid side.
A few strong to possibly severe storms tomorrow so going with a 2 but I think the bigger threat is the heavy rainfall with the atmosphere loaded with moisture.

    1. I suspect you and my SIL would have some great conversations. His eyes lit up when i read your question to him

  18. IMO, Wednesday felt hotter, as the dewpoint was higher than it was most of today. More breeze here in Woburn today (Thursday) compared to yesterday (Wednesday).

    1. As I said I thought so as well – maybe some of the other areas didn’t have the stronger breeze that we had???

  19. Last day of the heat but watching the skies for a few strong to possibly severe storms to develop this afternoon and evening.
I don’t see this as a widespread outbreak of severe weather. To me it looks like pulse type of thunderstorms could develop where there weak then get strong quickly to only weaken just as fast.

  20. TK any thoughts on next week? Are we gonna get any type of decent weather, or just stuck in gloomy days.

  21. We just decided to take the kids to York Beach tomorrow morning. Hit the Zoo and just hang out. What does the weather look like from 8am to 3pm?

      1. We made an attempt but we had some friends unexpectedly swing by last night and a bit too much wine. πŸ™‚

    1. Coastal, if you’re talking about Saturday, it appears that York Beach, ME is looking at a possibly stormy morning and at best an overcast/cloudy day. Sorry to say, but from what I’m seeing it does not look to be a great beach day.

  22. Watch those skies later today for anyone with outdoor plans. Level 2 activity with the storms with the threat of some severe weather.

…STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE LATER THIS AFTERNOON
    INTO THIS EVENING…

SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS SOUTHERN
NEW ENGLAND BY MID AFTERNOON AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT.
A FEW THUNDERSTORMS MAY BECOME SEVERE WITH THE PRIMARY THREAT
BEING DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. HEAVY RAINFALL WILL ALSO BE A CONCERN
WHICH COULD LEAD TO ISOLATED FLOODING IF STORMS MOVE OVER THE SAME
    AREAS.

THE STORMS SHOULD INITIALLY DEVELOP IN THE INTERIOR BY 2 OR 3
PM…MOVING TOWARD THE COAST BY EARLY EVENING.

PEOPLE ENGAGED IN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SHOULD KEEP AN EYE
TO THE SKY AND BE READY TO QUICKLY MOVE TO SHELTER IF A SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS ISSUED OR THE SKY BEGINS TO LOOK
    THREATENING.

      1. Hi Vicki πŸ™‚ Not surprised! Since temps didn’t go down much last night, it didn’t take long for the air to heat up this morning.

        1. Sure didn’t – we are just at our high for the past two days so will be interested to see today is highest here for the week

  23. I see a thunderstorm over the fish south of Long Island which to me is an indication that the atmosphere is primed and were just waiting for the trigger to deliver strong to possibly some severe storms. If we see any severe weather reports I think it will be wind reports. The atmosphere thankfully not setup for large hail or tornadoes today.

    1. Will there be any ocean influence this afternoon in the Brighton area which would prevent the storm from becoming severe?

  24. Watch that wind direction because if it comes off the water that could stablize the atmosphere just enough to keep the storms below severe levels there. I would not rule out a strong thunderstorm in that area.

  25. totally off topic – what was the restaurant in pembroke that John and Sue were talking about that has great chowder? Thank you

      1. THANK YOU BOTH πŸ™‚ That’s what I thought the name was and we have it #1 to visit when there in August. There is an Oliveiras in Framingham too which is why I asked. It’s brazilian – I never new it was here but the name caught my attention. Do you think it’s the same owner?

          1. It is on Route 36. It used to be the Lake Palace years ago if you happen to remember that place.

            1. did you see my post regarding the ship. do you think it is a good ship. I heard the pool is not that big and since were going during peak time might be hard to swim.

              1. The pool was definitely on the small side but since we went in October (during the fall nor’easter) I couldn’t be a good judge of how crowded it will get. The kids pool was really cool though.

          2. center street coastal. as your heading through the center of town keep straight and it will be on your left. not far at all from center stores.

  26. Just reading the latest discussion from the SPC and it looks like a severe thunderstorm watch may be issued for parts of SNE.

  27. That storm is being warned upon and moving east near the MA CT border. Its currently producing quarter size hail and damaging winds of 60mph. So in the watch box of the storms that have warnings this looks the most impressive.

      1. The warning has been extended in Litchfield Coutny CT until 3:45pm so the NWS out of Albany sees that storm
        holding on to warning criteria.

    1. I just hope the storms hold off till 5pm when I get home. Rt3 will be bad enough on a friday. to make matters worse I was in at 3am so my car is here in Boston so I already have a tough start.

  28. Looks like a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is up now for Western MA, parts of CT and NY. Storms are popping up more, now. Well, I guess this is it for the HHH for awhile, according to the weather forecasts. Actually, that’s ok w/me. This latest heat wave has been a true sign of summer – and ‘though nxt. wk. looks cool and wet (apologies for those on vacation) doesn’t bother me as long as we get some more HHH weather off and on before the summer is over.

      1. Yes, I am seeing them, too. They are moving eastsoutheast and some look like they are trying to build.

  29. Disturbance in Gulf of Mexico which could become Tropical Storm Debby.

Uh-oh. That’s my sister’s name and we don’t always get along so well. πŸ™ But she spells her name Debbie. Anyway, slow-moving front should keep anything from getting up here.

    1. Oh dear my cousins name and she never liked me much growing up. Is this a bad omen πŸ˜‰

      1. Vicki – when I put lol and smiley face, I just meant that it wasn’t an omen. Sorry your cousin didn’t like you. I wish my sister and I got along better.

  30. That cell is moving right along. Looks as if one popped up over Manchester CT. Is it possible those cells zapped, the strength from the cell to their north in MA. It seems to have weakened considerably

    1. I’m not sure. There is a large area of just rain in WMA. I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point some storms develop in Western, Central and Eastern MA. ‘Though Matt Noyes said about 20 mins. ago that for the time being, a dry slot might have developed in MA but we still should watch for storms.

  31. We’ve had torrential rain, frequent cloud to ground lightning, 50 mph wind gusts, and half inch diameter hail here in Manchester, CT. The storm literally blew up right over us and I see the NWS has now issued a severe T-storm for it. Just lost phone service here at our office, but still have power.

    1. Wow mark. I saw it blow up over Manchester and tried to remember what part of CT you are in but couldn’t.

  32. Mark you got that storm and the one in Litchfield County CT which really to me has been the most impressive of the storms this afternoon.

  33. JJ – that’s where I had my eye earlier this afternoon and then all of a sudden this thing just blew up right over us. It is still pouring and we have had cloud to ground lightning come within 200 yards of our office on either side of the building. This lead storm looks stronger to me now on the radar than the Litchfield Co storm. I think this first storm may stabilize the atmosphere a bit and take some of the juice out of the second one. We’ll see!

  34. A lot fo lightning and heavy rain with these storms. There not moving fast and another cluster in the Hudson River Valley non severe storms might move over the same areas already were hit.

  35. We have been deluged here. Very slow moving storms. I see the NWS now has issued a Flood Advisory for our area. We just got a brief break from the rain and now it is pitch black again with the Litchfield Co storm moving in. I would not be surprised if we end up with 4″ of rain by the time this is all said and done (don’t know how much we have received yet as my rain gauge is at home).

    1. Holy crap…it is absolutely scary black here. Darker than the first storm. All the lights are on in the parking lot. Thunder clapping again.

        1. Onnthe radar it looks as if there is a dark core or center to the storm extending from Manchester up to south Windsor

  36. So much for the first storm “stabilizing” the atmosphere. We are in an all out severe storm again! It looks like 2AM outside. Just got word that downtown Manchester is flooded.

  37. These storms are not moving fast and I would not be surprised if more reports of flooding happen. Only one warning now in southrn parts of Windham county and will see if the warning goes into parts of Rhode Island.

    1. Odd that they seemed to move quickly from NY to west CT then just slow down. Perhaps I was working and lost track of time. Just had dog out and no matter which way I look there is a different cloud formation. All incredibly unique.

  38. Transformer just exploded outside of our office and half of the building is without power. Just tremendous amounts of rain coming down. There are two large lakes that have just formed in the grass outside the building.

  39. I’ve been watching the CT radar so closely I forgot to check MA. Looks like a tiny cell is what was popping those towering clouds just south of here

  40. Glad to have made it home before the storm, getting dark here in . Was a rough ride home because i am exhaused coming off a 52 hr work week.

        1. Husband just got home too. I was worrying about both of you. He has been working 50+ hr weeks as well. Have a relaxing night

  41. Mercifully the storm is over. The eastern end of our bldg has about an inch of water on the ground. We have got three cubicles flooded and electrical cables sitting in water. Not good!

Vicki, in response to your earlier comment, the forward progression of the cold front was forecast to slow down which I think contributed to the slower movement of these storms.

    1. Ahh somi didn’t imagine it. You sure were smack dab in the center. It was amazing to just watch on radar

We have thunder all around but no idea from where
