July Ends Wet, August Starts Humid

11:14PM

I blew this one. Never expected solid rain to get into eastern MA the way it did. However, blown forecast aside, the rain is beneficial, so it’s not a bad thing all together. Anyway, this mini sorta tropical low pressure area will be gone before we know it, exiting via the Gulf of Maine by early Wednesday. A second mini low will have to be watched as it may take a similar track or a track slightly further east later Thursday, otherwise, the coming several days will feature a typical August pattern as the new month gets underway, warm temperatures, increased humidity, and a few episodes of showers and thunderstorms. The most likely days for showers/storms will be Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday. Friday and the weekend will likely be rain-free in just about all locations.

Eastern MA, southern NH, and RI forecast…

OVERNIGHT: Rain ending southwest to northeast but remaining mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Humid. Lows 62-67, mildest city and coast. Wind N 5-10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Decreasing clouds in the morning then redeveloping clouds by afternoon with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing, favoring southern NH and the 495 belt in MA. Highs in the lower to middle 80s, some 70s south-facing coastal areas. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 65-70. Wind light S.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the middle 80s., cooler some coastal areas. Wind S-SW 5-15 MPH but some coastal sea breezes.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 67. High 89.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 68. High 86.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 67. High 87.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Low 69. High 84.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Low 66. High 85.

  1. TK, thanks for the update. Rained like heck in Newton.

Would like a Red Sox game forecast for tonight. Have tickets and hoping tonight is not a repeat of last night’s game, weatherwise. (Though the results were good.)

  2. Thanks TK…..it sure would have been some good snow down here in Plymouth had it been a winter storm.

  3. heivy rain with currently temp at 84 degrees
s wind at 9 mph with gusts up to 14
    humidity is at 60%
watching radar and most of the activity is moving northeast

  4. Torrential rain and high winds again. Minimal thunder/lightning.

We have had the porch in its current location since 1990. We have never had rain come from the south and into the porch more than 3 or 4 times in those 22 years. Every storm this summe with driving rain has come from that direction. Odd

  5. Off and on moderate rain in Sudbury last 1/2 hr. or so. Now hearing occasional thunder. Sky is pretty, ‘though. It has that summertime look to it that you want to bottle up on a grey winter day.

Speaking of winter – I, too, am hoping for a snowy winter. Never thought I would ever say that. I really missed the snow last winter. Hopefully, we get a cold and snowy winter. Meantime, I am enjoying the summery weather now.

    1. You didn’t get any of the downpours rainshine? The last one was a doozy with pretty high winds. Unfortunately its the kind of rain that is so hard it mostly runs off lawns but should help the rivers

      1. I’d say kind of a downpour, Vicki. Heavy rain but not torrential and it didn’t last that long – ‘though I suppose if you were driving in it it wasn’t fun. And no strong winds around here. Seemed the storms were more southwest and southeast of here.

        1. I think they were just east of you. They went SW to NE right over here and the last one blew up a bit in wayland just to your east. We had two bursts of torrential. They were short lived but gave us just under a half inch.

      2. sadly it destroyed some really nice large flowers on my lemon tree. Its an experiment and so far its doing great
got 6 lemons already and its only about a 1.5 feet tall. with more coming

      1. Yes and reading the NHC discussion the GFS makes it stronger while the Euro eventually weakens it into a wave. Time will tell. At least it is not coming up the coast as of now.

  6. Logan received 0.75″ of rain today…very impressive in a short time.

HHH returns for the forseeable future through much of next week…UGH! 🙁

  7. Sat on Rexhame Beach for a part of the afternoon and watched the dark clouds on the edge of the northern horizon. Otherwise, it was a fairly sunny afternoon overhead.

    1. Thanks Tom for answering my question regarding sunrises/sunsets. It was a lot to digest. Do you teach earth science at your school? I would say your students are lucky to have you as their teacher. 🙂

      1. Philip. I completely agree I do enjoy toms explanations. But shhhhhh Whisper. I don’t want to embarrass tom :))

      2. Philip, do you have a free day, say mid next March, when my students have had me for 6 months and let them know that :):)

I teach middle school math, but have always loved meteorology.

        1. Tom even now after decades I have a handful of teachers I remember. I suspect for your students you will be one of the handful 🙂

            1. Like then HS typing teacher who told my mom never to let me do anything that involved typing. Made a darned good living proving her wrong 😉

              1. i love proving teachers wrong 😀
I love proving everyone that thought i would not make it through elementry ,middle school and high school wrong because of my disability. Proved everyone wrong 😀 and next is college.

  8. July temp anomolies courtesy of Taunton NWS climate data

Logan: +1.9F (9 of the last 13 days of the month were below normal)
    Hartford, CT: +2.6F
    Providence, RI: +1.8F
    Worcester: +3.0F

Compare to say, St. Louis, MO: +8.1F, avg high temp: 98.6F, 15 days of highs > 100F.

    1. They sprayed in Easton about a week ago and I can honestly say I have only seen a couple Mosquitos since. It definately works just don’t know for how long

      1. Oddly we were not seeing any mosquitoes before spraying. We had tons really early spring then after those few hard frosts have seen fewer this year than ever. With the diseases they carry, I have to say that I don’t mind them spraying. I just wish they’d let us know. We have reverse 911 through the town.

        1. where vicki my area is terrible still even with treatment well maybe its to do with the marsh saw some large fat dragon flies so i know they are doing there job 😀

          1. I’m guessing it’s the marsh area – we are not too far from sudbury river but no real water in our neighborhood or nearby enough to be a problem

    1. It will depend on wind direction forcast calls for a south southwest wind. I would have worried if it was a northwest to west wind and only if it was stronger. i think if anything it will move north.

      1. thanks matt – I’m thinking depending on how well protected the transformers containing pcbs, etc are it will not be good for anyone in the path of the smoke

  9. I’m on a phone conference so can’t see in any direction but northwest; however, clouds are really building in that direction. It’s 88 with a dp of 68
