1 Hot One

10:22PM

Hot days have been hard to come by in Summer 2014, but Wednesday will be one for much of the southeastern New England region. It won’t be middle 90s hot, but more like around 90 hot, which is about the limit it seems this season. This will be accomplished with high pressure overhead and to the south in the upper levels, and to the south at the surface, also with a cold front approaching from the northwest, increasing the southwesterly air flow over the region. This front, working with moderate humidity, may trigger a few showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening but I do not expect them to be widespread. Favored areas for development is interior NH and MA and down to parts of RI as well. But even though the front will not be overly productive, it will send a push of cooler and less humid air in for Thursday. At about the same time, Hurricane Cristobal will be passing several hundred miles southeast of New England. The only thing we will hear from that is some increased ocean swells Friday into the holiday weekend. During this time, high pressure ridging will try to rebuild over the East Coast while another front approaches from the west northwest. It does not look like this front will have too much push to it, but should get into the region during the second half of the weekend (later Sunday and Monday). This will bring an increased chance for showers and some thunderstorms, especially by Monday. This may also linger into Tuesday as the front hangs around along with more humidity again. Though it will warm back up over the weekend proper (Saturday-Sunday), do not expect too much heat. It should cool back slightly Monday-Tuesday.

  1. Good morning, I think.

One last comment on the trade:

After listening to all of the pundits and varying opinions, I still do NOT like this
    trade. So much for that

    re: Tropics

Shear and Dry air is killing development in the Gulf.

Our most recent wave looks to have gone poof.

Our next wave is forecast to develop, however, there are model differences.

CMC wants to March it towards the East Coast, while the GFS wants to
Have it mill about in the middle of the Atlantic.

  2. Usually on the morning of a hot day (90+) you can tell it’s gonna be hot. The air just has that feel to it. I didn’t feel that this morning. Doesn’t mean it won’t hit 90, but just an observation.

    1. I tend to agree with you.

      My thoughts on a reason(s):

      1. The dew point is not way up there.
      2. The nights are just that much longer allowing for a decent cool down
      especially considering #1.
      3. The sun angle just isn’t there anymore and #2 sunrise is that much later.

Even with that, does NOT mean it can’t/won’t reach 90. 😀

BTW last night Eric’s forecast high for Boston (Logan) was 89. 😆

    2. Agree Ace. It has been close to 90 for the past two days and it didn’t feel it. The same so far for today

  3. Watch what happens with Fri. Morning temps, if skies stay clear Thursday night. Cooler airmass, low dewpoints, radiational cooling. Brrrrr.

We’re off to camp for a few nights and I told my wife to pack jackets. 🙂

  4. NWS highlighting the region in the hazardous weather outlook for a low probability of thunderstorms. I don’t see anything approaching severe levels today should any thunderstorms develop. A heavy downpour looks to be the main threat with any thunderstorm today that tries to get going.

  5. Current Tropics:

    From Mike’s weather page:

In case you are wondering, Invest 97 in the Atlantic was dropped but the area is still highlighted by the NHC. It is expected to head West and possibly develop some down the road. The orange area off of Africa is expected to organize. Models are showing a recurve with it right now…. but will watch of course as it progresses.

  6. You might see a quick gust of wind again later today should a non severe thunderstorm develop over your area. More than likely with any thunderstorm development a quick downpour would be the main threat.

  7. It’s gotten warm this week, but it did not have a mid-summer heat wave feel to it. And I suspect that any warmth that comes early next week will be similarly tempered. As I mentioned before, this brief warm spell has a winter counterpart in March (a brief cold spell). In both instances, the seasonal changes win out. That is, March cold is mitigated by longer hours of sunlight and a different sun angle, i.e., winter losing ground. Late August heat/warmth is mitigated by the opposite forces, i.e., summer losing its grip. This year, however, summer really never found its way, especially in terms of dew points. Summer’s punch to the stomach tends to be high dew points, stickiness, the muggies. I’m thankful that we’ve had very little of that.

    1. And I’m hoping the same for winter a very mild dode. It can be as cold as it wants just keep the snow away .

      1. What good is cold without some snow? Just cold bare ugly dormant earth. Need some snow to blanket things and keep them from the harsh cold. Plus it makes winter more pleasing to the eye 🙂

          1. I hear ya, its a difficult season to like unless u really really like snow. To me, a mild winter, around here anyways, is really just a chilly spring, then when spring arrives, its just more of the same gloomy chilly weather, and i hate spring more than a traffic jam.

  8. We’re due for a wet period of some sort – rain or snow. Don’t know when that will happen. But, I think it’s coming. TK suggested October will be on the wet side. This would be somewhat anomalous, given that October tends not to be very wet (I love October in SNE, by the way!!). However, there is precedent. October 1996 was very wet. October 2005 was also very wet. Could this be the 9 year cycle?

    1. Tk sure seems like he has a handle on the up coming fall and winter. I wonder if the weather conf will be going the same way. Time will tell he knows what he is doing.

    1. Police CONFIRM it was a shark, yet this is a recent tweet:

Alleged shark seen off #Marshfield was actually a sunfish. Very common to the area according to #Scituate Harbormaster.

      1. I’m gonna go with the harbormaster on this one. Lot more experience in that category. The police wouldn’t know a shark from a sunfish from a goldfish if it jumped up and bit them

        1. IF ALL the could see was a fin, then unless one is an
expert, hard to tell the difference as one of the Sunfish
          fins could easily be mistaken.

They needed to see the fish in the water like they
          did at Duxbury.

Now, did this harbormaster see the fin? IF so, then
I’d go with him as well.

IF he is just saying that, then it could still have been
          a shark.

Here are a couple images for sunfish:

          http://www.earthwindow.com/mola.html

          1. Looking at that dorsal fin, I’d be hard pressed to
say whether it was a shark or Sunfish. That’s
why one has to see the fish itself and not just the fin. An expert would know it in a heart beat, but the
            casual observer? No way.

  9. Ugh, all the radio hosts are now backpedaling on the trade. The ones who were against it yesterday are now trying to justify it. They’re afraid of the Pats backlash. Have an opinion and keep it, man oh man. I’ve heard the argument on both sides and i still don’t like it. Whether Mankins was declining or not, they are still a better team with him on it.

    1. Agree totally. Here is the confirmation from Lou Merloni.

IF Mankins agreed to the salary restructure, would he be starting?
      Answer: a RESOUDNING YES!!!!

He refused the restructure and was summarily shipped out of town.

Therefore, Unequivocally, the Reason was due to MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is NO other way to look at it.

What a bunch of CHEAP F***S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who says differently is NOT LIVING In the REAL WORLD!!

      1. The thing that gets me, if it really was bc of money, why not wait till the END of this season? It’s not like that money will go to a big time free agent this season, its too late for that. Why make the team worse for this year for what? So Kraft can buy another Yacht with the 6.5 mil he would have been paying Mankins? Guarantee that money will not go toward someone else to make the team better this year.

        1. Again, agree totally!!

Money people do NOT NOT NOT want to give their
money away no matter what. You can say all the nice
things you want to say about Kraft, he is CHEAP!!!!

      2. It’s the same crap the pats have done for the past 10 years. Yes, its one of the reasons why they have been “successful” for this long, but its also one of the main reasons they haven’t won a super bowl since 2004.

  10. Commentary…

    1) Sharks: Shark-mania is a little out of control in the media these days. Those things are all treated like they are Jaws, as in the shark in the movie. How many shark attacks have there been on our coast this Summer? Hmm? Also, shark attacks are not really attacks. Sharks have to taste things to find out what they are. They don’t like people, but don’t realize that until after they take a bite.

    2) Patriots trade: Just a business move. No biggie. Long term impact will be about as insignificant as all the other trades. 😉

    3) Weather: Watch for a few storms the next several hours, but so far not looking like widespread activity.

I woke up with atrial fibrillation this morning. The episode lasted 5 1/2 hours and it converted back to normal at 1:15PM. Quite happy about that.

Heading toward Hampton Beach for a Summer evening there and a fireworks display, or a thunderstorm, whichever comes first. 😉

    1. Geez, TK be careful with that condition. That’s serious crap.

      re: Sharks agree.
re: Trade, it may be business, but it sucks. And we don’t have to have it shoved down out throats and be told to like it by the team and the media. I don’t like the trade and so be it.
re: Storms. I won’t see one. Someone might, but it won’t be me. that’s for sure.

      😀 😀 😀

  11. Hope you feel better. With the sharks I believe you do need to take caution because you never know . Was it last summer that a swimmer got attacked. As far as marshfield goes as a kid I remember lots of sun and sand sharks. Marshfield harbor master is tops in my view.

  12. Logan hit 90 today! 🙁

#5…I don’t know if it is my imagination but in spite of the 90 and 67 dp it doesn’t feel as horrible as one would expect with that temp/dp combo.

Nevertheless, I am keeping my fingers crossed no 90+ during September…but I don’t have a good feeling on that.

  13. Hi peeps.

Long time.. winter will be here soon enough and I’ll be back.

    In the meantime..

Sweet lightning show out here right now.

By the way, nice meeting up with you guys last week (TK, Emily, Nate, Tom, ACE, Hadi)

Hope we can catch up before winter.

    -W

  14. Spent day at Dana Farber. Mac had CT to see if the tarceva (cancer pill) is working

IT IS!!!!!!!!!! The spine is rebuilding itself. No new tumors anywhere. Big day:)

      1. Thank you all. Between losing our dog and worrying about today it has been one heck of a week. But today was good news and we know rascal is running free in heaven 🙂

        1. Vicki: <3 (not sure if hearts translate on here or not) But also big hugs to your family 🙂

TK: We love you and hope everything is okay with your heart!

Weather: Summer sure did make a comeback these past few days, we got some nice thunders today and distant lightning. A friend posted a picture of a highway in the winter, covered in a heavy snowfall with traffic. I told him that to me, that was the visual equivalent of a York Peppermint Patty. I'm in the "I love winter," camp 🙂

  15. Wind is picking up where I am and getting dark. Have a severe thunderstorm warning until 7:45pm

  16. Great….out of power now. First day of homework for the kids my candlelight.

    “Wicked” lightning.

  17. Vicki , glad to hear all is well with husband. I was a cancer patient in 2004 and have been cancer free since 2007. It was scary.

  18. Every cell that starts marching this way, hits the wall and goes POOF. 😀 😀 😀

It’s like Charlie is sitting on Rt 128 in his RV. 😆

  19. Going out. Even though I KNOW it’s NOT going to rain here, I’ll have to shut
the windows anyway just in case I am wrong. I hate it when that happens. 😀 😀

  20. Ok I have had just about enough. We have thunder all around and NOTHING here. Charlie what will it take to get you to stop making these go POOF 😉

  21. In southern California, the surf has been extraordinarily from Hurricane Marie. There was a drowning and probably more than 100 people were rescued yesterday.

  22. My radars must be broken. I can hear what sounds like quite intense thunder and dont see it anywhere on radar

  23. Been raining hard and non stop for a while in Woburn…we always seem to get the most rain and snow around here. TK joked himself that Woburn seems to attract all this weather.

      1. Fine, thanks. Luckily not that type of rain…haven’t checked but it has to downpour for a while for me to worry like that. I should check though!

  24. Storms behaved about as expected. Prime area was W to SW of Boston and it was not widespread, but some areas were visited by decent cells. And that was your cold front.

Now a couple very nice Summer days. Then humidity returns for Labor Day Weekend with 2 nice days (though a few t-storms may be around for Sunday, like Wednesday). Monday is more questionable.

Overall pattern is warm and humid through at least the first half of September. Get used to it. That was expected too. 🙂
