Final Days Of Summer

7:30AM

The last 7 days of Summer before the Autumnal Equinox (next Monday after 10PM) will feature a variety of weather but in a rather quiet pattern. Things look very much like described in the previous post, the small system coming through today with the shower threat, then dry and cool air mass for midweek including the reinforcing front setting up a couple very cool mornings at the end of the week, but high pressure also bringing nice weather for the end of the week and most of, if not all of, the weekend, which will feature a warm up after a chilly start. The next front will be due on Monday with a shower threat.

  1. Tk This is now 3 times that I’ve heard that Oct looks slightly above normal temp wise and above average rain wise, will see how it pans out 🙂

  2. Even with the above normal temps earlier this month, i would guess with the recent and upcoming below normal temps, we are back to near normal for the month so far

  3. I think someone mentioned(Tom?) breaking 80 is pretty much a sure bet but I don’t see that happening this weekend or at all the rest of the season. Sunday might be our only shot but slim one at that.

    1. Yes it was Tom and I as well.

I thought that we would Certainly see 80 again this year.
      I still feel that way.

Last night Eric said 80 for this Sunday. We shall see if that happens OR
we fall a bit short. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen later.

It “could” easily happen in October.

      1. Yup. Looking at record highs, 80F is possible for another month.

Of course, our friends at Accuweather go out 15 days beyond that. 🙂 🙂

        1. Its been 89F at Logan on Oct. 17th and 85F on either the Oct 25th or 27th, I forgot which date in the 20 seconds since I left the page. 🙂 🙂 🙂

        1. As long as TK continues the same format, I could care less about the color. I like the idea of a different color per updated blog. 🙂

    1. This is from Eric Fisher’s fb page. He points out that far SE MA saw 8″ of rain from Arthur and is still below normal!

          1. NWS believes low 80s are attainable. Exceptions will be where a SW wind is coming off water, as well as higher elevations.

  4. Hmm. I think AccuWeather’s super extended forecast is going to go horribly wrong next week. 😛

    1. Oh and they are forecasting the first snowflakes for the NW suburbs of Boston on the morning of Tuesday October 21. Get ready!!!! 😉

    1. Neat stuff OS.

An opinion, I’m not sure what the effects of El Nino or El Nino Modoki might be……..

      BUT ….

There’s got to be something to read into that so MANY eastern Pacific tropical systems hugged the Mexico coastline and of course, the last one just crushed Baja.

Thats probably trying to tell us something about winter, I just have no clue as to what its foreshadowing.

      1. Tom, as you often are…You just may be onto to something.
I don’t ever remember such an Eastern Pacific hurricane
season. (Or as I like to say, Mexican Hurricane season)

I thought I read somewhere (A post by Cantore I think) that indicated that this latest Hurricane was the Strongest EVER to
        hit Baja California.

        1. Thanks OS !

I dont remember an Eastern Pacific Hurricane season like this either.

Was googling Baja storm damage photos and some of the initial ones are startling. The airport is in shambles.

          1. Unfortunately, construction is pretty poor down there, so damage was MORE than it needed to be.

I saw a good sized boat resting in a street, utility poles down, roofs off, many of the shacks where poor folks lived where totally destroyed and even more solidly constructed building took a good wallop. Pretty sad situation for sure.

NWS is concerned about MAJOR flooding
in Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas from the remains of this storm. Some models predicting nearly 7 inches of rain!!!

    2. One thing we DO know, is that it’s probably not going to be very effective to try to forecast the winter based on comparisons to non-Modoki conditions. Yet people are going to compare them just to make a cold/snowy forecast for either purposes of hype or wish-casting. Forecasting what you want to happen is not generally a good idea. 🙂

    1. A friend of my parents from Belmont was one of the team looking for Nessie way back in the 60s…..you’d think they’d have found him by now 🙂

      1. I don’t agree with that. You sound the government poo pooing something. 😀 Certainly NOT likely to be real, but rather It looks like a fine photoshop job to me. That isn’t a branch and rock!
It is a nice placement of a Computer generated Nessie into that photo. 😀

  5. TK – Are we looking at above normal temps overall from now through the rest of the year including the big holiday season (Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years)?

  6. There are very few hints of color on the trees here in Boston. It is going to be a late drop off season no doubt. My bet is Boston doesn’t see the final leaf fall until well after Thanksgiving into early December in some areas.

      1. IIRC we had late leaf drops in 2002 and 2011. The following winters were on both ends of the spectrum so to speak. 2003 we had the President’s Day snowstorm and 2011-2012 very little snow. Who knows what lays ahead? 🙂

        1. Here we have had late drops the past several years. We have been collecting leaves for pickup until nearly thanksgiving and honestly if we were not Christmas decorating we could rake after

    1. Looks like I’m going to end up going back to blacks/greys/whites, and forget about new colorful styles. 😛

  7. I doubt there is much correlation of leaves dropping, causing snow etc… I also have noticed acorns are falling much earlier this year. Do the squirrels know something? Again IMO little impact on winter.

Why the smiley face about leaves Charlie?

    1. I agree. We had tons of leaves on the tree when we had the October snow…was if two or three years ago. Please tell me it was just two

      1. It was three years ago Vicki. The farthest distance in time we get from that horrible snowless winter, the better AFAIC. 😉

  8. Different areas of SNE may see very different leaf color and drop. In areas with the highest rain deficits leaves tend to drop early. Unless we get some widespread rains in the driest areas it will be a muted short lived foliage season.

    1. That’s what confuses me. We have been very dry and dropping late. Although as I said yesterday, the bug damage to maples has to make a difference

  9. 75% or more of these “incredible” photos and videos out there are at least enhanced, if not complete fakes. There’s a great one going around right now that everyone buys about this stunt plane losing a wing and landing safely.

It was a hoax. And there’s a video out there made by the people that did the hoax, explaining how. Yet it’s still circulating as a legit event.

      1. Having the tech is what makes it so easy to produce these videos and photos.

Some of them are fun. The ones I have issues with are the ones that convince people that something physically impossible just took place.

That picture of lightning “hitting” the tree is a classic example.

  10. Oh and don’t even get me started on the “tornado sticking up a rainbow” photo.

That one just plain pisses me off.

    1. The question should be asked of everybody, not just Pats fans.
However, no matter what team they are affiliated with, they can comment or not comment, as is their choice. It’s not a requirement to comment. That’s where people are wrong. Period.

People will read it whatever way they want. He said he has strong feelings toward the subject, but chooses not to make them public. I can respect that. Why don’t they concentrate on going after those who have committed a crime, instead of picking on someone who chose not to comment about it. THAT’S cowardly. End of story.

      1. Amen and well said. It pisses me off (sorry but I liked it when you said that above) when everything comes down to being about the Patriots and NOT the individual who committed the crime.

      1. RGIII is a flop at this point unless he gets his act together. This has nothing to do with him and making that comment about him being my girlfriend is pointless.

  11. RGIII is not a superstar, I think players that are respected and carry a lot of weight should be weighing in. Payton, Rodgers, Brady etc… RGIII hasn’t earned anything and his opinions are not important to the league. Don’t make this about him bc I didn’t.

  12. Perhaps not for Logan, but I think this has been the coolest morning so far in Marshfield. It was a CCC night down here and it got down into the low 40s. Brrrr …….

  13. Hadi, I’m with you 100% on the stars of the game needing to make their voices heard. They are the only ones who can truly make a difference and by them keeping quiet is cowardly and in a way enabling players like Rice and Peterson. Whether they like it or not, they are the spokesman of the league and need to do more than just play football and collect a paycheck. They are more than that and should start voicing their distaste for these players’ actions.

    1. Ace, I don’t think by speaking out that the players will have much, if any, influence on the decision. I think the actions of the individual teams the player is a member of will. Hernandez was gone immediately. That had to do with the Patriots. Rice and Peterson do not. I would not want another franchise telling the Pats what to do.

The real influence on the decision would come from the people boycotting and that isn’t going t happen. The other real influence comes from the sponsors and that is happening.

      1. You are right about the sponsors as I have been hearing some pulling their sponsorship and that hurts the team and NFL where it hurts. IMO its not enough. Change needs to come from within and it starts with the stars of the game. It doesn’t matter what team it comes from, its a league-wide problem.

  14. And how come its ok for Robert Kraft and his son Jonathan (mumbles) to go on TV and radio and talk about this and actually throw their support behind the commissioner but the players can’t come out and give their thoughts? Just plain stupid. This whole thing will leave a deep and permanent scar on the NFL and all sports for that matter.

  15. Good morning.

I Agree with Hadi that Brady’s comments were weak.

Makes me wonder (and one talk show host commented on this, don’t remember who)
that should Brady speak out strongly, he might alienate some players in the locker room (Presumably because they are sympathetic to Peterson and/or Rice?). I’m guessing this domestic violence/abuse is very prevalent among players in the NFL.

    Sad, sad, sad.

I’ll stop there, because I fell a MEGA RANT coming on and it would get nasty!!

    1. Oh for heavens sakes mega rant all you want – it is a quiet day in the weather area 🙂 And we don’t know what is being said to the players in the locker room and out of earshot of the media which will hype anything and everything Brady et al says.

      1. I have REALLY REALLY REALLY STRONG feelings on this
and I may offend some. Any man who beats a child or a woman
is an ANIMAL and a DIGUSTINGLY POOR EXCUSE for a
human being. And NOTHING anyone could say would ever
change my mind on this!!! Send those SCUM BAGS UP THE RIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. Oh and for the record,

I think that both Krafts have WIMPED out on this and
defended Goodel to the nth degree. PATHETIC!!!!!!!

          1. The Krafts have done a lot for this league, but when it comes to this issue, mega fail. They seem to care very much about the money and the brand, but when it comes to the people and human issues, they fall short like most other team ownership.

            1. I must have missed something on Krafts. I thought he (didn’t hear son) said that he supported the handling of Rice (suspended indefinitely) . I’ll have to look further it seems.

              1. He supported Roger Goodell in his original handling of the situation (2 games) and said Goodell had no knowledge of the footage inside the elevator. That’s the part where i think he’s full of you know what.

                1. Agree – and no one had to see what happened INSIDE the elevator to know dragging an unconscious woman OFF the elevator is absolutely not justifiable. Remember, Goodell punished top down for bountygate

            2. And no, they don’t get brownie points for how they handled the Hernandez situation. That was a no brainer.

        2. I totally agree and that is why I have said all along – end of career – absolutely no return to the league.

I hear what peterson says about his upbringing. His comment that strict discipline from adults in his life is what he credits with his staying off the streets and out of trouble. But his child is not in that position. And strict discipline does not EVER justify beating and breaking skin.

  16. And also back to weather – it is 54.4 and feels refreshingly lovely. I loved the dark clouds yesterday – no rain here – just dark clouds which made me think of Fall.

    1. I loved the dark clouds as well. We had a few drops around noon yesterday but other than that it stayed dry

      1. They sort of feel like a warm blanket on the earth when the weather gets colder. I know it sounds silly but I can’t think of another way to describe them.

        1. Off to the office SANS coat or jacket. 😀
We’ll see how long I can go without a jacket.
Last year it was about October 15th, so we shall see.
Friday AM threatens to be pretty chilly. May have to
          throw that jacket on.

  17. By the way my comments are intended for all stars not just Pats. I brought up the Pats bc of our location and article.

  18. Here is an interesting NWS display regarding the flood areas in the SW:

  19. Average 1st frost in north attleboro is 10/6, average 1st freeze is 10/23
Average last frost is 04/29, average last freeze is 04/11

If we did receive a frost in north it would be 3 weeks early
