Thursday Forecast

7:22AM

DAYS 1-5 (JANUARY 23-27)
High pressure hangs on with nice weather today then moves offshore as another high presses down from eastern Canada with a cold front dropping through the region north to south on Friday with some cloudiness but no precipitation. Low pressure then tracks northeastward and the strongest indications are now that a primary low will remain stronger for longer and its secondary low will be a little weaker and too far west to hold cold air, which is marginal anyway, in for the upcoming precipitation shield, which will also have a quicker timing than previously expected. So look for a rain event starting Saturday afternoon and ending by the early hours of Sunday. But we do need to watch some energy as cold air returns Sunday for possible snow showers. Right now it does not look like this would develop into steady snowfall. By Monday, high pressure brings fair weather and a seasonable chill. Forecast details follow…
TODAY: Sun and high clouds. Highs 40-47. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
FRIDAY: Variably cloudy, limited sun. Highs 36-43. Wind W shifting to N 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 28-35. Wind NE up to 10 MPH.
SATURDAY: Cloudy. Rain arriving afternoon. Highs 40-47. Wind SE increasing to 10-20 MPH, strongest South Coast.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain likely evening, ending overnight. Lows 35-42. Wind SE 10-20 MPH early, then variable up to 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of snow showers. Temperatures stead 35-42. Wind W increasing to 10-20 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 20-27. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 35-42. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 1)
Quick disturbance may bring a snow shower January 28. Fair, seasonably cold January 29. Watching the January 30-February 1 period for possible storminess, but too soon for details.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 2-6)
One storm system may be impacting the region to start the period and another one may arrive mid to late period. Too soon to determine precipitation type.

  1. Projected temps showing for next week through Saturday 2/1 show a pretty decent week with pretty nice temps overall .

    1. Thank you, TK.

This January will feature 1 week of below normal temps and 3 weeks of above to well above normal temps. Won’t land in the top 5 for `warmest’ January, but could still land in top 10. Boston still hasn’t gotten to single digits this winter. Not even close, really, at least by my thermometer’s readings. Perhaps Jamaica Plain or Roslindale have? We’ll see what February brings, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say Boston doesn’t get below 10F this winter. And that my friends is unusual.

    2. Indeed, that westerly flow is not going to have much bite to it. Thus far, winter’s punch has been a jab here and there, but hesitant at that.

  2. The 8-14 day CPC outlook of above normal temps cannot be ignored. That would go into the start of February.

  3. JP Dave, indeed, my low in Back Bay was 15F in January, and 15F in December. I’m assuming Logan has similar numbers.

It got to 9F in January 2012; a very mild winter. Ain’t going to go below 10F this month. The CPC outlook, as Philip pointed out, suggests above normal temps. Kind of a return to the weather we were having in early January. Can it get cold and snowy in February after that? Yes, of course. But, at this point we must conclude winter hasn’t packed much of a punch, and doesn’t look like it will do so in the near and mid term.

    1. Even if February produces the snowiest month this winter like last winter the last few winters here have been for the most pretty easy to handle would most here agree .

  4. I don’t think the CFS weeklies and thus, monthly model run, have been great this winter.

With that disclaimer, the CFS has been consistently projecting very cold to arctic air in February.

    1. If I remember correctly, Middleborough had 30″ from storm and no classes for an entire week!

    1. Thank you Mark. I was going to post a link.
This is the same system the Euro has as all snow to a much lesser extent.

Bottom line, as you say, we have a WATCHER!!

      1. On that GFS run, Vicki, you’ll have to ship some snow to my home.
Looks like Sutton and vicinity will have 28″+ and Taunton less than 3″. I’ll send over the dump trucks! 🙂

        1. We can have a snow party in Sutton. Everyone bring a shovel please. 🙂 ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

  5. Yeah I fixed that typo. It is now “precipitation”. I was working on 2 solid hours of sleep and a couple short naps otherwise. 😛

Still pales in comparison to my 3 biggest weather-related typos of all time…
#3: “temperationes” .. If I had a dime for every one of those…
#2: “Siolated shopwers nad thudnerstorks”. Yes it was a very late night.
#1: “Scattered showers/thunderstorms in the drug areas of Columbia” … Yes, “drug” was supposed to be “crop”. I believe I was sleep-typing at my desk at about 2AM on that one.

Thankfully that last one did not actually go out over the newswire…

Anyway I’m still leaning mild and quick with this weekend’s system because things just don’t come together correctly. This is why I failed to get detailed beyond day 3.

I’m also still concerned with the same time period previously mentioned as we hit the first couple days of February.

      1. It’s about 50% gone. Definitely better today. I think I had what I like to call a “quiet sinus infection” .. one that is not bacterial and doesn’t really need to be treated, but will just clear itself over a period of time.

        1. Makes sense. My youngest has had them for a week or so now. She also thinks there is some sort of allergen

Glad it is improving. I hope it disappears completely though

        2. Doctor said Monday my headaches might be caused by sleep apnea I’m getting tested . I did about 5 years or so ago & showed a minor case . I just don’t think I could wear the mask every night as I think I would freak out and have some sort of panic attack. Well anyways I agreed to the test & we will discuss the results at my next appointment in August.

            1. I have sleep apnea and was diagnosed few years ago but like you I couldn’t see wearing that thing. Now two years later I can’t sleep without it. I feel refreshed and ready for the day. It took a couple months to get used to. Get the study done I’m sure you’ll be happy you did. Especially the crazy hours and shifts you work you need to be healthy and alert. I do thank you for your hard work and dedication!

              1. Oh wow thank you for that very kind . Yeah between the hospital job with overtime year round plus operating a small business I work an awful lot . I never wake up feeling refreshed . Like I said I told my Doctor I would at least do the test I hope Insurance approves the home version

              2. been using that damn machine for over 20 years!!!
I still hate that freakin thing!!!
I have trouble with it all of the time as I toss and turn so much.

  6. Fwiw…Pete has concerns about next weekend as well as it may have “some tricks up its sleeve”. His exact words, btw.

  7. My worst typo by far was in an email to the CT DOT Planning Dept. a few years ago. It was regarding some traffic count data and I left the “o” out of count. Oops!

    1. LOL. And oops is right.

We have Whitins school and whitinsville out here. For some reason, I most often type an S rather than W.

  8. It finally has stopped raining in Spain. “Gloria” had been raging since Saturday. A village north of Barcelona had more than 19″ of rain. There were 13 deaths because of the storm, the delta on the Ebro River is ruined and infrastructure, such a railroad track, has been destroyed.

  9. SSK
Not usually, BUT much better than without it.
Without it, I’m a walking Zombie. With it, I can at least function. At my age, the bigger
problem is getting up to piss in the middle of the night. Do NOT get old!!!!!!

  10. SSK I have sleep apnea and use APAP. It has made a huge difference. Encourage you to stick it out if that is indeed the issue. I had a close call falling asleep driving and it provided the motivation I needed once I knew what it was. Good luck.

  11. I’ve had a CPAP machine for 3 months now.

My wife told me besides snoring, I occasionally stopped breathing. Reported that to my dr and was in for a sleep study at south shore hospital about a month later, then a follow up sleep study where they tested the pressure setting, then about a month or so ar Er that, received the CPAP. Now need about 6-7 hrs of sleep and awake rest of the day.

  12. Wow pretty common thing . Thank you all for the advice it’s greatly appreciated I will keep you all updated .

      1. My doctor said that yes but when I checked out reception said it’s up to you know who the insurance. Thant was Monday I have not heard anything yet .

  13. Regarding the sleep test…in my case they gave me a take up setup that did an initial screening and from that they figured out I should do the full overnight. My brain was “waking me up” out of normal sleep up to 33 times an hour and that was a “moderate/high” level. Maybe I should change my WHW screen name to Darth Vader…again, good luck.

    1. I was diagnosed with SEVERE apnea. I have it as bad as one could possibly have it. I need a full mask set at the highest pressure. There is a hurricane blasting
down my throat to keep the air ways open.

    2. Thank you CC. Mac had very bad apnea but after he was diagnosed with cancer. They didn’t want to add that to everything else. I have this feeling I’d go for the test and just lie there awake all night
