DAYS 1-5 (MAY 26-30)

“Ain’t it foggy outside, all the planes have been grounded”. Bonus points if you can identify the song and band (hint: it predates the 1980s). Some of you woke up to quite the foggy morning, courtesy a calm wind and the marine layer that’s been hanging about since Sunday evening. This layer of air is not going to be obliterated by a strong wind but only gradually scoured away by a wind that shifts gradually around to the southwest and west, but that takes until tomorrow. So this morning, and again tonight, some low clouds and fog will be the result of the low level marine air in place. But in between, it will clear up enough for a hint of a summertime feel to the air, away from the shoreline at least, during the day today. Coastal locations will be kept cooler due to a light southeasterly breeze, which doesn’t really shift more to the southwest until sometime tonight. Wednesday’s weather will likely be the warmest (hottest in some cases) as we get more of a westerly wind largely off land. There are limited coastal locations where a west wind is still at least a partial ocean breeze, outer Cape Cod and the islands, for example. These areas will continue to be cooler than others, which is completely normal and typical, especially early in the warm season when the ocean water is still fairly chilly. Our dew point will be creeping up gradually, but unless you are super-sensitive to rising dew points, you won’t really feel it that much until Thursday when it will be borderline muggy for early season. I’ve a risk of pop up showers for that day, but I don’t really think they will occur in most locations, perhaps far western areas late in the day and maybe a few more at night. Ahead of an approaching cold front on Friday it will be rather humid as well but we’ll see more cloudiness and a rain shower risk, perhaps a few thunderstorms as well. If this front’s timing was faster we’d be looking at a bigger thunderstorm risk but I think the front itself will not be crossing this area until Saturday morning. This does likely mean that some of Saturday may end up showery as well, a little more pessimistic an outlook than I had previously.

TODAY: Low clouds and areas of fog eventually give way to sunshine. Highs 78-85 except 70-77 South Coast. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Areas of low clouds and fog mainly South Coast. Mostly clear elsewhere. Lows 55-62. Wind S under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Some early low clouds/fog South Coast, otherwise mostly sunny. Highs 81-88 except 73-80 South Coast with coolest over Cape Cod. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear except patchy fog interior lower elevations. Lows 56-63. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Slight risk of an isolated shower or thunderstorm inland locations mid to late afternoon. More humid. Highs 80-87 except 72-79 South Coast with coolest over Cape Cod. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Risk of a few showers. Humid. Lows 60-67. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and a slight risk of thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 75-82 except 68-75 South Coast. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Lows 60-67. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers, possibly a thunderstorm, favoring morning and midday hours. Gradually lowering humidity. Highs 68-75. Wind SW shifting to NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 31-JUNE 4)

Dry end to May and start to June with a cooling trend May 31 and June 1. Warm front may bring cloudiness and wet weather by later June 2 and a brief return to milder weather June 3 before the end of the period is much cooler again.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 5-9)

Overall pattern looks cooler and drier than average but at least one threat of showers/thunderstorms should occur.

      1. I wore the grooves out on that album (their debut album) back in 72. Many people thought that the lead singer on “A Horse With No Name” was Neil Young…voices sounded a lot alike.

  1. Good morning and thank you, TK.

The roads last night were quieter than usual, with thick fog hovering under the street lights. It felt like an old movie was about to start. Classic New England by the shore.

  2. Thanks, TK !

Logan, as of 9am, 4F cooler than any other ob I can see in southern New England.

I liked Eric F’s tweet on Logan and its temp yesterday, “Logan is a silly place with silly temperatures”.

  3. Montreal and Quebec and surrounding areas are going to have some hot weather the next 3 days.

Not to the level of the early July, 2018 heat wave, thankfully !!

But 90F to maybe 95F with 60 to 65F dew-points has to be a shock to the system after the below average weather pattern of the last month and a half.

I believe there is less A/C up there, hopefully this won’t be dangerous to anyone up there.

    1. My sensor is now reading 73, but the sensor is now into partial sunshine, so I suspect it is over by a couple already and at prime sun angle it will probably be
      4 or 5 degrees over.

  4. Between the coolness and the late afternoon fog at the beaches hopefully was a blessing in disguise for keeping crowds down. No promises for future weekends obviously.

  5. some of the long range models been hinting at some tropical development, starting next week in the western Caribbean, its been going on and some of the EURO ensembles also have it. This morning how ever the latest run a cat 2 hurricane hitting New Orleans, lets see it go poof in the next model run or move back into the unorganized weakened stated going out to sea option.

  6. Wow – the America lyrics bring me back. The first big concert that I went to was America in 1977 in Potsdam, NY. The opener was Jimmy Webb. If you don’t recognize that name, I am almost certain that you would recognize many of his songs. Give ’em a Google!

    1. Had to look up Jimmy Webb, seems he has a lot of popular songs. That must have been a great concert !

    2. There is a version of Webb’s “Wichita Lineman” on Amazon that features Webb and Billy Joel and is really good.

    3. Very interesting and I don’t know the name. But will do some hunting.

Odd it was 77 when Dolly Parton was opening for Mac Davis as an unknown

      1. Here are just a few of the songs he wrote followed by those made them hits.

Up, Up and Away (recorded by the 5th Dimension)
Wichita Lineman (recorded by Glen Campbell)
MacArthur Park (recorded by Richard Harris)
        Galveston (recorded by Glen Campbell)
All I know (recorded by Art Garfunkel)
Where’s the Playground Susie (recorded by Glen Campbell)
By the Time I Get to Phoenix (recorded by Glen Campbell)
Worst That Could Happen (recorded by Brooklyn Bridge)

Other songs were recorded by the likes of Mark Lindsay, Brenda Holloway, Linda Rondstadt and others

  7. 00Z CFS model loop (out to 768 hrs) looks much warmer today compared to yesterday’s run for mid and late June. We’ll have to see the coming runs and see if there is consistency with either a cooler or warmer outlook.

It’s perfect in Marshfield today, or at least in our neighborhood. The blend of the strong sun, warm mid level temps and light onshore breeze has it about 70F with some humidity in the air to make it feel summerish, yet not uncomfortable. I’m guessing Logan’s 61F is also the beach temp at the water line. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Speaking of the strong sun and light winds, that is allowing a shallow top layer of the ocean to moderate just a bit. Highest reading I’ve seen at the Logan Buoy this spring of 54.1F.

    1. The 45 day EPS is also “warmer” but not excessively hot. I’m not sure I buy any of it completely.

  8. Absolutely perfect down here today. Temperatures right around 80 and dew points in the low 60s. Maybe just a tad humid for my liking but no complaints!

  9. We are 86 down from 88 with DP 85. House is warm but not hot enough for more than ceiling fans.

  10. Amazing that much of NNE is considerably hotter than SNE. I bet that doesn’t happen often.

  11. Marshfield and Blue Hill’s wind have come around to south and their temps have risen.

Perhaps we see a temp jump at Logan btwn 7 and 9pm.

    1. Holy crap, they followed that up with 3.53 inches of rain in 1 hr from 6 to 7pm, for a 2hr total of 6.35 inches of rain.

  12. Thank you, TK.

Philip, to your point on NNE v. SNE. This tends to be the one and only month (into early June) that NNE can be warmer than SNE (at least anywhere near the coast). Of course, places like Nantucket often remain cooler than the rest of all New England throughout summer.

    1. A warmer NNE can occur any month of the year, but it’s most common from late March to early June. Other times of year there are specific regional patterns that can result in the same thing.
