  1. Sweden’s approach has been in the news. After a bad start from March to May, it had a good run from June through August, with relatively few cases and a plummeting death rate. All good. September has been quite different, and it appears from what we can gather that October is showing signs of an acceleration in new cases and hospitalizations. But, it’s excruciatingly difficult to gather data from that country.

For the past 2 or 3 weeks Sweden has reported 5 new deaths every day. That’s statistically extremely improbable. The reporting of new cases and deaths in Sweden is a bit suspect. It’s been that way for a long time.

    – Sweden doesn’t report recoveries at all. Only a few countries are this lax.
    – Reports new cases in an untimely manner and almost on an ad hoc basis (not just a weekend thing) – they get reported with a lag, and with quite a number of days with missing data
    – Reports an extraordinarily unlikely constant number (5) of new deaths. No other country has done this. Not even Iran, and its data is way too consistent, but not to the degree of Sweden.
    – Rarely updates numbers in ICU – says 23; I have a source in Sweden who says the real number is closer to double that and growing daily.

    1. I’ll ask my friend what she is hearing from family in Sweden also. I know they correspond very regularly.

      1. No. It’s shameful the WH doesn’t report on their condition. It only reports on the asymptomatics.

Have you all noticed the traditional GOP slowly peeling away from the grip of Trump. I know I have. There are certainly plenty of Republicans who embrace Trump. But, I believe many see the writing on the wall. The Trump `revolution’ is ending in all likelihood, and it’s bringing many people down with it. In subtle ways, GOP leaders are signalling they’ve had it with the White House.

Mitch McConnell today said: “I haven’t actually been to the White House since August the 6th. Because my impression was that their approach to how to handle this is different from mine and what I suggested that we do in the Senate, which is to wear a mask and practice social distancing.”

  2. Waiver request for my ex-wife to travel to the U.S. to visit her son has been denied by the U.S. State Department. No surprise. We’ll appeal.

Worth mentioning that the White House and federal government officials of all kinds are violating CDC guidelines all the time, on distancing, crowd sizes, masks. Yet, they deny a person entry to the U.S. because it could in their words pose a risk of coronavirus transmission. It is a remarkably nativist policy.

This evening in Florida; see link below. People are flagrantly in violation of CDC protocol as they wait for their hero Don Jr to speak. Yet, the State Department won’t allow for a mother to visit her son (I tend to gag and vomit when I see any of the Trump family):

    1. Joshua I am heartsick for you. The hypocrisy is beyond belief. If it were back in my youth, I’d have a dozen folks my mom could call On your behalf. No more sadly. But then with the staunch republicans of old, this would not be happening. All I can keep doing is to pray and keep speaking out in support of decency

      1. We’re appealing. In the appeal we can provide more accompanying information than in the original request. So, we’re hoping that will do the trick. It’s supremely annoying, though.

If our federal government was acting responsibly, I’d still find it difficult, but could understand that the policy is in place for a reason. But, when it’s obvious the U.S. government doesn’t give a darn about the virus, then I get upset.

  3. Based on McConnell’s comments today I have cautiously renewed optimism in the “Ditch Mitch” campaign’s outlook.

I heard from a friend on the hill that Mitch’s own daughter from his first marriage is a liberal and doesn’t / won’t have a relationship with her Dad – she refuses to speak to him. As a mom who lives for her kid – THAT is Karma.

Joshua – no words except the four letter kind. My husband is from Morocco so we know too well the way we (meaning US) treat non natives – and as a Mom I can’t imagine being separated from my own son.

We got run out of house and home due to power outage and are having a Courtyard Marriott adventure night!!

    1. Mama as always your words echo mine ….no small coincidence. Ugh on power outage. Hope all is as normal as possible in your world soon

      1. Thanks Vicki! We are camped out for the night at a motel in Devens. To be honest I had never actually been on Devans base before – it feels like a WDW version of a military base! Of course it’s deserted.
