  1. Dutch case numbers are improving. That is, numbers of daily new cases are coming down a bit. But, hospitalizations and deaths are rising. Makes sense, given that the latter two indicators are lag cases.

    Today, the Dutch government decided to:

    – Allow for hairdressers, nail salons, and massage therapists to open;

    But:

    – Close museums and brothels (these are legal in the Netherlands).

    I find the museum decision odd, especially because the government is now allowing contact professions (well, except for prostitution) to open. It would seem that having a haircut is riskier than going to a museum. But, heck, I have no idea at this point.

  2. Global daily deaths at 8,000; second highest number ever during this pandemic. My guess is that it won’t reach the record 8,500 tonight, but will get close. For anyone who still thinks this is just influenza, well, I’ve followed the data for influenza for many years. On the worst day during a severe flu outbreak worldwide deaths total around 1,000. And that’s very unusual. More typical global daily death numbers are less than 500 during a limited 2-3 month time period. With Covid-19 the average daily death toll for more than 7 months has been 6,200.
