    1. They need to prioritize Matt unfortunately some need to wait . Hospital workers & first responders who both come in contact with this must be treated first .

      1. I am not saying that, I am saying where they put K-12, they should put college (Grad and undergrad) students there as well instead of considering them general public. (Phase 2) I was not expecting to be in phase 1 like my Mom and Dad which I am happy about. I just feel this is another way for society to crap on my generation. I should not be behind someone that works at Dunkin Donuts.

        1. I am still reading it . May I ask why your in phase 1 as I’m looking at what phase for my wife as her immune system is compromised

          1. we are not in phase 1 and I am not saying that I should be. What I am saying is that college students should be in phase 2 with the K-12 students. I feel all education should be in phase 2. At the moment I would be in phase 3 which I do not think is the right thing to do. I should not be after someone that works at dunkin donuts but I also should not be ahead of someone that is high risk like your wife SSK. I also believe she would be in phase 1

            1. People working at DD serve customers and can spread the virus. I’d put any service individual before me. But Matt the amount of vaccines are limited. I get that they are doing their best. College kids can work online. Or behave.

              1. Well tell that to the administrations of the universities as my University is doing a hybrid in class and virtual. Also I should be graduating this semester but many are not because of Covid. I have had to go through way to much red tape just to get the go ahead to do my research that other wise would have just been go on and do it. Grab some of you fellow students and do it. I understand the need for prioritizing etc but they need to look at how this is impacting people directly. Those with jobs at the essential workers like DD and MCs etc are not losing their jobs they are making money and obviously been able to work just fine without the Vaccine. College students are being stressed out mentally and also falling behind which will increase the time needed for their studies and research which increases the student dept even more than it already is. It will directly impact our futures more than the people that are working at Dunks. (ps I am just using DDs as an example there are many other so called “essential workers” that I think should come after college students and professors. Its not so much insulting as it is just another barrier that my generation unfortunately has to face that will continue to impact the 20 to 40 somethings the longest.

        2. Matt I think they are limited and don’t have doses for all at once. Second a college kid is old enough to behave re masks and distancing. I’d look at that as a compliment to your generation. Overall, no one is insulting anyone. I am high risk for three reasons and surely do not think my generation is being insulted by not being first.

          1. With regard to college students, it might be a good idea to prioritize those specifically living on campus but those living off campus and commuter students can be on their own with the general public.

Those living on campus should be like those in nursing homes, prisons, etc.

    1. As of now they will not be mandatory but I wonder if that will be the case where I work . The flu shot is absolutely mandatory.

        1. I’m not sure what you mean. Proof of what? Do you mean at the hospital that he received the vac? That wouldn’t surprise me. I know those working at Dana and Brigham had to have the flu shot.

        2. Does your dad work for a hospital ? If so I suspect he would get there & it would be recorded into the hospital database just like they do with the flu shot .

          1. Yes, he works directly with MGH’s Covid team as he is the senior executive director of the Blood and specimen lab. Himself and his staff when they get it will have a special sticker on their ID card at the hospital showing they been vaccinated. Is what he is hearing is a possibility.

            1. Should be mandated for any medical Staff. Glad to hear MGH is doing this. Since I know Dana and Brigham did and they are are one now…..well, not Dana but Brigham….is think they would do this as well.

  1. Vicki, I’m doing okay. No fever. No aches anymore. Do have a cough, but not alarming. Energy level is normal, too. Unfortunately whatever I got did a number on my already chronically distressed GI system (GERD/IBS). Tomorrow I get tested. We’ll see.

The numbers nationwide are really bad. Yesterday we recorded the highest number of deaths in one day (2,960) and the highest number of people hospitalized (close to 105,000).

But, at least we have Mike Pence to soothe us into complacence with a combination of platitudes and lies. In March he said “any American who wants a test can get tested.” Then, in late April, Pence asserted that “by Memorial Day this virus will be behind us.” In recent months, he keeps uttering the vacuous phrase “help is on the way;” and today he declared “we continue to save many lives.”

European numbers continue to tumble for the most part, except Sweden and Switzerland.

    1. Good news, Joshua. I feel for you re GI. As you know that is a weakness for me also and it takes a lot out of you. Be well soon my friend.

      1. Thanks, Vicki. In the past 18 months I had begun to really manage my GI system to the point where I was more or less okay, But, in recent weeks it’s felt a lot like 2017 and 2018. Oh well. There are worse things.

  2. Initial data suggests Covid-19 will lower U.S. life expectancy by 1 year. Keep in mind, the U.S. has seen some appalling life expectancy numbers since 2012. No other industrialized nation has seen life expectancy drop during this time period. In fact, life expectancy elsewhere continued on an upward, steep trajectory. The U.S. stagnated around 2012 and then started a declining (!) trend from 2015 through 2018, with a very slight upward blip in 2019, and now followed by a sharp decrease in 2020. There is a clear disconnect between dollars spent on healthcare (we spend a tremendous amount) and the value obtained.

Life expectancy is a function of many things. Perhaps the two most important are health conditions of the population (these are getting worse in the U.S. – thanks to things like the opioid crisis and public health (underfunded and woefully inadequate in the U.S.). Third on the list are socioeconomic determinants such as healthcare access and inequality, with increasing numbers of poor and working poor.

  3. I saw a stat that on the evening news regarding “trust” in the vaccine and it is, at least for me, considerably shocking to say the least.

    Men vs. Women:
    Men 61%
    Women 28%

If I’m not mistaken, women traditionally have been far more likely to go to the doctor and maintain their health during the course of their lives than men. That is the main reason their life expectancy far exceeds men.

Overall, trust has improved considerably in general:

    50% (September)
    61% (December)

A massive PSA campaign is definitely needed in the coming months. According to the medical community, 70-80% compliance is necessary to defeat the virus.

    1. Yes and as the Governor said it will not be mandatory. Per some phone calls of different employers he got the sense most would want it . With me at the hospital & you at the school Philip it will be interesting if our places of employment mandate it for us if they can even do that . Hospitals have there own set of rules as well as I’m sure colleges do as well . Personally I want to get the shot & I do not . Of course I want to be safe but I’m nervous with how fast it came out . I’m sure most can understand that .

      1. I’m guessing you hit the nail on the head SSK. Women may be more proactive Heath wise; but not being sexist, I think women also question things more. The upside is that the vaccines are done ….as far as I can see…without trump and having absolutely nothing to do with trump.

      2. it will be similar to the Flu Vaccine I think which are mandatory at most medical facilities. MGH use to excuse religious reason but that was scrapped 3 years ago and is now solely only if you have a medical reason that allows you from not needing to have it. If you don’t you can not work.
