    1. As much as I am on the side of general public health first, I’m not confident at this point another shutdown would really do all that much good. I am really wondering now if stores, restaurants and other businesses are even the actual sources of the uptick in cases. I heard a stat a few days ago that restaurants are <1% of actual Covid cases. Don’t know if it’s accurate though.

    2. I agree with you. I think if baker were doing the same now as he did in the spring that we would have those same positive results. Now he stands there and lectured to people who just do not care and we continue to get worse.

Shutdowns suck. Deaths and long lasting illnesses suck more. It’s a tough decision but in the end I will always go for the greater good. We are bad in this area. Businesses are shutting themselves because of positives and I’m betting those positives are spreading. Shut now for a limited time or keep on going in the same direction

And a big thank you to those who are doing what they know works for all rather than just themselves

  1. It’s a good question regarding shutdowns. Always a balancing act, and a very difficult one.

What we know about virus transmission is that between 65 and 80% occurs within households. Of course, this begs the question regarding the origin of the first infection in each of these households. The evidence is clear on this: Indoor spaces lacking good ventilation, with clusters of people not distancing and using masks are breeders of coronavirus spread. So, indoor bars and restaurants, for example, churches, offices, gyms, movie theaters, etc …

I don’t think Baker will go much further with restrictions. As a result, we’ll be treading water in Massachusetts with relatively high infection rates.

Interestingly, Germany and several other countries in Europe with lower infection rates than Massachusetts are going for the strictest lockdown yet. Germany is closing all non-essential businesses until January 10th. And, Germany is going further than most European countries by closing all schools until mid January.

What is noticeable in coverage of the coronavirus this weekend is that Europeans (and even the Brits where vaccination has begun) aren’t focusing on the emergency use of newly approved vaccines. I only found 1 story on vaccines on 2 popular Dutch media sites, and the piece discussed challenges with respect to distribution.

There’s a general awareness that the first 1-3 months of vaccinations will do little to stem the spread. Hence, the emphasis is firmly on mitigation measures.

  2. Baked will absolutely not do a shutdown he has become a very weak Governor & I lost all of the respect I had for him . I think he needs to do more as we hit 4, 677 and 41 more deaths today & close to 5K cases yesterday . I know closing down & restrictions in place are not ideal & we all know that but we need a leader who can make these tough calls based on life & death situations not $$$$$ lost in my opinion only .

    1. Why bother to shutdown when the cases are likely coming from families within homes anyway, due to the change of seasons?
