      1. While it’s true more GOP politicians have contracted coronavirus, the virus has no political preference. Also, I feel equally bad for whomever it affects, regardless of his or her politics.

I do think some in the GOP have been less careful than they ought to have been. This continues to be a common thread.

  1. Philip, Biden has no magic wand. The pandemic won’t end following his inauguration. But, Biden is a humble person, who doesn’t mind admitting errors and then listening to people with gravitas to inform his decisions. To me, that’s the key to decent leadership: Humility and evidence-based decision-making.

It’s unfortunate that Trump’s leadership skills were and are lacking regarding this pandemic. I’m not saying Trump is totally devoid of leadership skills. But, the ones he possesses – (over)confidence, (high)energy, an optimistic view that everything will be okay if government doesn’t get in the way –
are useless in a public health crisis. In fact, they’re counterproductive.

The coronavirus ended Trump’s presidency, and will be his lasting legacy. I say that because while the Republicans did relatively well in the election – so those down ballot – he did not. Had there not been a pandemic, I’m convinced he would have won handily. Moreover, had he handled the pandemic with consistent messaging and a coordinated approach with the states to tackle the virus head on and not underplay its importance, Trump would have won the election.

It surprises me that Trump – a politically savvy, if not conniving person – made SO many blunders regarding Covid-19. I put some of the blame on poor advisors, including Kushner, Kudlow, Meadows, Ross, and others.

  2. I’d like to share with you a sad story I just read on the Dutch news site about two members of a Protestant Congregation who died of Covid-19. They were in their 60s. They contracted the virus on December 15th, while recording Christmas carols in their church, in preparation for an online Christmas service.

This disease is vicious and merciless.

Here’s a translation of the article.

At least ten members of the Protestant Congregation in Biddinghuizen became infected with the coronavirus in December when they recorded an online church service in the church. Two of them have since died from the effects of the disease.

After the recordings it became clear that one of the persons present during the recording was infected with the virus, says the chairman of the Church Council Jan Klopman. “After that ten congregation members fell ill, including myself”, he told the regional broadcaster. The deaths of the two congregation members were read during the service this morning.

The carols were recorded on December 15. Due to the lockdown, the church had decided to only provide online services until at least 17 January. According to Klopman, all corona measures were followed during the recordings.

    1. Is it possible that wearing masks won’t be enough? Up until now, masks have always been the key!

      1. Good question.

My daughter lives in the UK and recently visited Boston. On our walks in my neighborhood she remarked several times that people HERE are far more mask-compliant than in London. She also said that there are fewer outdoor crowds. The latter is a function of Boston being much smaller than London. But, the mask comment I find interesting.
