  1. French police detained five people Saturday at an underground New Year’s Eve rave party that drew 2,500 in western France despite a curfew and other restrictions. The party lasted at least 36 hours. Police issued 1,200 fines including 800 virus-related rules for not respecting the curfew, not wearing masks, illegally gathering and illicit drug use.

France has reported 64,000+ virus-related deaths.

  2. The new Covid-19 variant has been identified as “B.1.1.1.7” and now found in 3 states (California, Colorado and Florida) to date.

    1. Thanks for the article Vicki. It will be interesting if asthma visits actually go back up again once everyone gets the vaccine and the pandemic ends for good.

      1. Thank you. I was surprised. But I notice my winter asthma is better this year. I suspect going fewer places may play into it

  3. Baker and I disagree re schools. That doesn’t make one of us right and one of us wrong. It is a disagreement only. I do think he has taken an approach unlike the one in spring. But then he has information I don’t. And he is in a nasty position. Today he let into the Republican Party. He is clearly frustrated as he and others should be. Well done, Governor.

  4. And now we want to cut the vaccine dose in half. I know the reasoning. But it is without a ounce of scientific data. I truly think we are a ship of fools ….no, not all ….destined to sink

  5. UK is now in the strictest form of lockdown until at least the middle of February. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2021/01/04/Boris-Johnson-says-lockdown-needed-due-to-new-COVID-19-variant/3111609791194/

Everything, including all schools, is shut down for the next 6 weeks. Keep in mind, the UK’s vaccination rate is significantly higher than ours. Clearly, when cases/hospitalizations are rising exponentially no matter how many vaccinations you’re doing it’s not going to matter for a very long time.

Hospitalizations in England have gone up 92% in the past month.

The latter concerns me more than the increase in cases, and suggests that perhaps the new variant is more severe. I don’t know, obviously. But, such a dramatic increase – ours in the U.S. has been significant, 35%, but not nearly as dramatic – suggests the possibility of the new variant causing more severe disease.

      1. Influenza cases are nearly non-existent this year. Every year different flu strains begin in Oceania (Australia, NZ) and then winds their way northward. Countries where new flu strains start completely obliterated Covid and also had some of the strictest lockdowns and social distancing in the world. This contributed to almost no flu there. It was predictable that because of more social distancing here than normal, plus less travel and crowds flu would be minimal in Europe and the U.S. that has indeed played out. Note, flu is much less contagious than the novel coronavirus and also most RSV strains. So, even minimal distancing will limit flu spread.

        1. And to think Gov. Baker insisted all school age children get a flu shot. Pretty much a moot point now.
