  1. According to Covid-19 vaccine tracker, U.S. is up to 9.3 million administered doses. A nice jump since the weekend. Probably some backlog, just like when they track cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Still need to ramp up vaccinations to between 1 and 2 million a day. Keep in mind that in most cases the doses administered were 1st doses.

    1. I saw on the news this morning that Covid-19 herd immunity is highly unlikely in 2021 even with vaccines.

Joshua, is this due to the slow start of the vaccine rollout?

And when will the J&J “one” dose vaccine be available?

  2. Found out a coworker in my department (another one but this one who was taking covid as a hoax) had covid. None of us were informed and he was out for about ten days but was still coughing when he came back. They didn’t even require him to have a negative test when he came back. Always fun to be risking your health to do a job you don’t like.

    1. Oh Dr. I have chills. How awful that they didnt tell you and he is still coughing. Isn’t contact tracing mandatory?

      1. Apparently it’s very narrow in regard to contact tracing. You need to be in close quarters with the person for at least 15 minutes for them to consider you close contact. And that’s only if the person names you as a close contact – when the person you’re talking about is a conspiracy theorist who thinks naming names is being a rat – you won’t get named and if you get sick you’re using your own time to be sick from work instead of having the time covered by the state if you’re named and wind up being sick.

  3. Tk If this is not appropriate, please remove. I suspect it is borderline and I debated for a while. If I had a way to contact philip outside of whw, I would

Philip, if armed protests are planned in all 50 capitol cities, are you near where they might be? I was thinking of you being in Boston and also using public transportation. I don’t want to prolong the discussion here, but just want you to know I’m thinking of you. I suspect there are others in Boston. JPD I am glad you are working from home

    1. Thanks for your concern Vicki. I plan to be near/stay home next Wednesday on the 20th to watch the Inauguration, which, I believe is going to be the most likely day for trouble. Even if protests occur this upcoming weekend, I’ll make sure to stay away from downtown Boston. I highly doubt those Trump supporters will come to any of the neighborhoods.

  4. Meanwhile in the U.K., Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip received their Covid-19 vaccines on Saturday. The U.K. goal is to vaccinate 15M by mid-February.

Also, I believe President Elect Biden received his second dose yesterday.

  5. I do not think we will have much trouble but I could be wrong . They are going to have everyone available & then some protecting things . I hope I’m right on this . And I hope so bad this imposter they call a president is impeached ASAP as he is a danger too all of us

      1. None Vicki not even sore arm . It’s the second one I hear that May or may not get you as I heard some say no issues & others felt like crap . Second shot I think is 2/8

        1. Good news. My niece and a few others did have a very minor reaction. Yes it is the booster but that is a good thing

  6. Dr. S, I’m sorry to hear about what happened at work. Your employer should require a negative test, especially if a person was symptomatic. They’re treating it too lightly.

Today’s coronavirus numbers are once again quite bad. We’ll be well over 4,000 deaths by the end of the day, that is, nationwide. Perhaps as many as 4,500, which would be another record. Numbers hospitalized have gone up, but so far it’s only been a small bump. Let’s hope this number reverts to its trend from the past few days. Cases continue to be horrendously high.

International travel – which I hope to do later this year (May) – will be complex and expensive. To enter most places you’ll have to show proof of a negative test within the last 72 hours. So, this often means use of rapid PCR tests which are more expensive and less accurate.

Then, to get back into the U.S. you’ll need to show proof of a negative test. The airlines will accept proof of a negative result OR of recovery from Covid-19, but NOT vaccination. That’s because an immunized person can still potentially become infected and transmit to others. I wish this last bit of information would be publicly disseminated more often. Vaccines are great, but not a panacea. In fact, we now have 3 members of Congress who got their 1st dose and were infected afterwards, during the Capitol siege. That number will surely grow. The superspreader event (riot, insurrection, Trump’s last hurrah) will be massive, with all the protesters returning home. And then you have the morons in Alabama celebrating the national championship. Literally thousands of college kids crammed into a small area, most without masks. Some will pass it on to Grandpa and Grandma and others. It is simply unacceptable that these things continue to happen on a regular basis.

  7. I’m beginning to despair about 2021.

I’m trying not to think about it too much.

I’m just not seeing improvement in behavior or rational responses. You almost wonder whether people really want to put the pandemic behind us by doing the right thing, or whether they’ve put their blinders on. I think the latter is happening. And that will mean another year or more of suffering.

    1. These daily numbers though Philip must me lower than they thought now I think a trend is going on . High numbers yes but not what we were seeing

  8. Canada instituting a stay at home Jan 14. I can’t imagine the people in this country Handling this. We are an amazingly selfish people…not all to be sure, but far too many

      1. Thanks for sharing, Vicki.

Canada’s numbers are much better than ours – per capita – and yet they institute a stay-at-home order. Similar story in Germany.

We’re counting on vaccines to rid us of the pandemic. But, it’s not that simple. I worry about the mutations and variants. Viruses are evasive. The more prevalence of the virus around the more it mutates. We’re asking for trouble when we have 200k new cases every single day. As we’re learning the vaccine won’t necessarily reduce the numbers of cases.

Virtually every other Western industrialized country is in a stay-at-home order of some sort right now, except the U.S. They’re all very concerned about what is happening. We appear to be almost blase.

I don’t pretend to know what the answer is, but it’s not the haphazard way we do things, surely.

I haven’t driven much since last March, but do go out to hike, bike, or see people from time to time outdoors. Today I drove to the Blue Hill reservation. The number of people on the roads is the same as it was pre-Covid. It took me 40 minutes to get there and an hour to get back. It’s only 20 miles from my house. Unbelievable traffic. Can’t be all commuters, since many work from home. Stores of all kinds are packed, restaurants are pretty full, too, even in places with `25%’ capacity. It’s weird and disconcerting, especially on a day in which 4,259 deaths were recorded (record).
