  1. Massachusetts wastewater analysis indicates coronavirus spread is abating. This is a very good sign, as wastewater analysis back in mid to late December predicted the surge that took place through the first week of January.

    Let’s hope we thread the needle. That is, vaccinate faster than the advancing B117 and other variants.

    Yesterday, 4,005 deaths were recorded nationwide. One of the worst days thus far, in terms of deaths. Let’s hope we don’t go over 4,000 again.

  2. Glad I saw my daughter in December, because it may be a loooong time before I see her again. UK is mandating 10-14 day hotel quarantines for US visitors to the UK, but also for folks returning to the UK (like my daughter would be if she visits me again this year). See link below. When you arrive at the airport in the UK, immigration official accompanies you directly to the hotel. No way to circumvent it. Besides the inconvenience of 2 week stay in a hotel – can’t leave for any reason – it is prohibitively expensive. If the US had the virus under control I could avoid this. Alas, it’s not under control. We flail along, muddling inelegantly. I think the Netherlands may institute a similar quarantine which would prevent my son from seeing his mother for another year. Good God, when is this going to end? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/04/uk-covid-hotel-quarantine-rules-wont-take-effect-until-15-february?

  3. Epidemiologically something is up.

    Cases are significantly down almost everywhere in Europe and US. Yet:

    – The slope of the downturn in hospitalizations is much flatter;
    – Deaths are basically flat

    Could we attribute this to an advancing B117 in the U.S. that is largely undetected, and an already dominant B117 in Europe that is detected?

    B117 is more transmissible, which one would think leads to more cases. But, Europe is in very strict lockdown, bringing the R under 1. In the U.S. the new variants haven’t yet become dominant, but may be displacing the older variant and once dominant we’ll soon see an increase in cases again. I don’t know. Time will tell.
