Thursday August 12 2021 Forecast (7:30AM)

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 12-16)

The Bermuda High will do its thing for 2 more days, through Friday, with heat and humidity being the rule and thunderstorms being the exception. Only a few may wander into the area later this evening that had formed to the west, and as a cold front begins an approach to the region, the same may happen later Friday night, but there is only the slight chance that any isolated storms can pop up during the afternoon heat as, despite the heat and humidity, we don’t have much in the way of any triggers for them. Reminder #1: If you are outside, try to stay out of direct sun and do as much activity as possible before and after the highest sun angles of the day. Reminder #2: Perseid Meteor Shower continues at peak, but some limited visibility due to haze / smoke / and patchy clouds. Still, the best time to try viewing them high in the northeast sky to overhead is midnight to first light Friday morning. The aforementioned cold front will be making its charge across our area during Saturday morning and midday with our best chance of showers and thunderstorms occurring then. Whether any given location sees that activity or not, the heat and humidity will break that day and by Saturday night, Sunday, and on into Monday, much more comfortable air will be here with a high pressure area building into the region from Canada.

TODAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms possible. Highs 91-98, cooler in some coastal areas especially the South Coast. Dew point lower to middle 70s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy ground fog. Chance of a shower or thunderstorm mainly west and northwest of Boston late evening. Lows 72-79, warmest in urban centers. Dew point lower to middle 70s. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Highs 90-97, possibly cooler coastal areas. Dew point lower 70s. Wind SW up to 10 MPH with light coastal sea breezes possible.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A shower or thunderstorm possible overnight. Lows 70-77. Dew point upper 60s to lower 70s. Wind WSW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially morning and midday. Highs 82-89. Dew point lower to middle 70s falling into 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to NW.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 62-69. Dew point falling to upper 50s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Sunny. Highs 78-85, coolest coast. Dew point upper 50s. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Patchy ground fog lower elevations. Lows 55-62. Dew point lower to middle 50s. Wind variable to N under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 76-83, coolest coast. Dew point middle to upper 50s. Wind N to E up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 17-21)

High pressure should keep the region dry with low to moderate humidity through the middle of the period before humidity starts to increase and the shower threat starts to appear later in the period, pending the movement of moisture to the south and southwest of New England.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 22-26)

High pressure off the US East Coast with a south to southwest flow of more humid air and we’ll have to watch some tropical moisture and a couple disturbances for shower threats.

  1. Temperatures are on the rise today, but so far dps are holding in the lower 70s. BAD, but better than the mid 70s.

  2. The next two days look to be the toughest of this hot stretch. Hopefully this will be the last big time heat and humidity we will see this summer.

    1. I sure hope so.

We did not install the AC in the living room where the TV is because we would have had to move too much furniture around and the room would look awful.

Last night it was brutally hot in there, so I move my computer into the kitchen where it was/is nice and cool and we watched stuff on Hulu on my computer. I am still set up in the kitchen right now. 🙂

  3. The next two days keep cool however you can. This is the first excessive heat warning that has been issued this year and I would not be surprised if one is issued for tomorrow.

  4. Thanks, TK!

So glad to hear about Mom!!!!! 🙂

Dave, I always think of Mrs. OS on days like this. I hope she is comfortable.

    Fog has burned off.

Sox have a 4 o’clock game today! Brutal!

  5. I am please with the very slow rise in temperature today.
Even if it does manage to get to predicted highs, the temperature will NOT be above 90 for as longs as it could be. Doesn’t sound like much, but it truly helps.

On the most Brutal days, Logan would be approaching or surpassing 90 by 10-10:30 AM. NOT in the cards for today
and that is a good thing. Not saying it won’t eventually get to 96 or 97, but the longer it takes, the better.

Still at 82 here in JP.

  6. Per Norton NWS, Boston´s average dewpoint from July 7th thru August 23rd is 60F or slightly higher. It ¨maxes¨ at an average of 61F for a few weeks in the middle of this time range.

Didn´t we have a summer recently with a lot of oppressive days (dp > 70F)

This summer, I don´t think we´ve had a ton of oppressive days, but it feels like the dewpoint has been 60F or greater most of the time. A lot of mid 60s dewpoints day too.

    1. It was a couple of years ago where we had the most days of
      70+ dew points ever.

As far as this year, it seems virtually every day has been above 60 and most 65+ I do not know the exact number, but I HATE IT!!!

I think I should move to some place like Calgary, Alberta Canada!!! OR Flagstaff, Arizona (But even here during the summer the dew points can be up there on occasion, but not quite like here)

      1. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think it was July 20-25, a few days in there, where we got low 50s dewpoints, cause we were camping and I remember the comfortable nights.

Other than that, its been pretty humid since a day or 2 after July 4th.

  7. A few consistent runs in a row with the GFS, just beyond 10 days out, of a tropical system off the SE US Coast.

I don´t know if this is the disturbed weather out in the central tropical Atlantic or something developing closer to home.

Projected steering currents around it are not strong. Something to be mindful of perhaps, down the road.

    1. No no no no no. That does not sound conducive to holding a wedding on a mountain summit in western ma around that time frame

      1. Sorry Vicki. Nothing to worry about, I´m sure. Lets hope for …..

84F and sunny with comfortable humidity for the wedding.

        Then a thunderstorm for you that night. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  8. Thanks, TK. Didn’t know about your mother – hope she feels better soon.

According to NWS there is a Thunderstorm watch for parts of MA – including Boston area . . .

    1. Sorry. It’s not a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. It’s a Heat Warning. Misread. But there is a severe thunderstorm in northwestern MA right now.

  9. 91 now, down two ticks from our high of 93.

Doing some dewpoint research this afternoon.

    These numbers are through 2014.

For the Boston area: All-time dewpoint max: 79º on July 27, 1940 and August 10, 2001.

For the Hartford area: 82º on August 18, 2002

For the Providence area: 81º on July 16 and 21, 1977.

On August 1, 1975, the max temp in Providence (Green) was 95 with a dewpoint of 80 for a heat index of 115.

On the infamous August 2, 1975, the max temp in PVD was 104 with a dewpoint of 77 and that heat index was 122!!!!!

  10. Oh how sounds travels!

Line of storms following the MA/NH border and headed this way about 50-60 miles west of Pepperell. It’s sunny and I don’t see much in the way of storm clouds yet out west. Yet, listen carefully and you can hear distance rumbles of
deep thunder occasionally. If you weren’t looking at the radar you would think there would be explosions or blasting somewhere in the distance. Love it!

    1. I was wondering if there would be a delay. My house is literally between two cells. But lightning is vivid

        1. Radar looks as if worst will go south of foxboro if I’m reading correctly. But I suspect lightning may well be within 30 miles

  11. Thanks everyone. I’m blessed to have been able to have a wonderful visit with my daughter. It was grand, as they say. We will never forget the deluge on Monday, and my getting completely drenched by the lorry (love that word) that caused a `tidal’ wave of sorts. Nostalgic me wishes it was Monday. But that only means the visit was good. One is nostalgic for things that make one content or happy. One of my fondest memories was meeting my daughter early this morning near the Highgate station. As I stood on the street corner, I could see her walking down the hill towards me, looking English (she feels so at home there) almost, but also very clearly my daughter. She waved from a distance. It’s hard to say goodbye. You kind of want certain moments not to end. But, life isn’t that way of course.
