  1. Luck ran out. Quite ill from the shots: Fever, chills, headache, nausea, malaise. I think it’s the 2nd Shingrix jab that’s doing a number on me.

    1. Sorry to hear that Joshua. I’ve had 3 Covids, influenza, tetanus and 2nd Shingrix with no issues.

      Get well soon.

    2. Joshua – I hope you feel better soon. I agree with you about Shingrix. My reaction to both doses were stronger than any others I’ve ever had.

      1. I was surprised my only reaction to the first was sore muscles in my arm, up into my neck and down to my shoulder blade area. It lasted a full week but was not as bad as I’ve heard others had. I can hardly wait to my second 🙁

The only other vaccine I’ve ever reacted to before covid is the old tetanus vaccine.

  2. Joshua sure hope you feel better quickly. I wasn’t sure with your comment yesterday how many you had. When I got my singles vaccine a few weeks ago, the pharmacist said it (especially second) was known as the “bad guy” until covid vaccines came along.

    1. Those indoor Halloween parties were always my concern, not so much outdoor trick-or-treating. However, the latter may have led to the JP Curley school outbreak. Just my opinion as I haven’t heard any mention from BPS officials.

      1. I think we are too lax when it comes to outside. JPD said his great niece and at least three she trick or treated with got covid. We don’t know how easily covid spreads outdoors. Deer are surely not indoors.

            1. Well, if I’m walking along a street with practically no one around, I’m certainly not going to wear a mask.

  3. Thanks for the well wishes, WHW folks.

I’m doing okay. I think last night from 1am to 5am was the peak of the `storm.’ Still achy and feverish, a bit wheezy, too (which may be from the Covid vaccine) but able to eat breakfast and sip tea.

I don’t take many sick days, but today is one.

    1. Adding that doors are kept locked so no one can walk in and do final steps by calling for CC# and bringing meds out to car. Sure would be nice if all took these steps.

  4. Hundreds of thousands are expected to celebrate the new year this December/January. Folks must show proof of vaccination at least 25 days prior. A negative PCR test 72 (I think) hours out is required for anyone who cannot be vaccinated. Apparently, Masks are only required for anyone who is unvaccinated. Children under five must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult.

  5. Turning the corner, it seems. Still somewhat unwell, but much less so than in the wee hours of the morning.

Israel has really shown a possible path forward in the Covid-19 battle. Case numbers are dwindling. No death was reported yesterday, the second day this week. How has Israel done it? A combination of the world’s most advanced and comprehensive booster program and continued strong mitigation measures.

Czech Republic and the Netherlands will be pursuing a very similar policy to Austria’s lockdown of the unvaccinated. I’m very uneasy about this. Stigmatizing and marginalizing the unvaccinated will stir up unrest, and may not solve much given that a lot of transmission is taking place among the vaccinated. My advice to these governments is to do what Israel is doing: Open up boosters to all adults and start mass vaccinating, and maintain, and strengthen where necessary, mitigation measures for all: Crowd and capacity limits are very important, perhaps more than masking. I wish we would do more mitigation here. Walking through Harvard Square on Saturday I noticed absolutely packed basement restaurants (low ceilings and poor ventilation), with lots of older folks crammed together. Especially given that there is no green pass system here, super spreader events are inevitable.

U.S. numbers look bad, in an ever increasing number of states. By the end of this week or the middle of next week we could have days with 2,500 deaths. I’m not going out on a limb to say that I believe Massachusetts will deteriorate in the next few weeks, leading to hospital capacity issues.

    1. Glad you are improving, Joshua.

I agree re targeting a certain group. Vaccinated can also be contagious.

I feel the same about just unvaccinated wearing masks in school. Talk about putting a target on their back.

  6. We already knew that lockdowns in Europe were VERY different from what we called lockdowns here (they really weren’t lockdowns in the U.S.), in that they were robustly enforced in Europe. This includes stay-at-home orders and quarantining for those who test positive. Well, the Austrians are taking this to the next level with the lockdown of the unvaccinated. I must say this is dystopian. I would NOT like it if police roamed stores checking people’s vaccine papers/smartphone QR codes, set up roadblocks and checkpoints on highways and secondary roads to do the same. I am sure this would be considered unconstitutional in the U.S. https://twitter.com/WeAreTheNewz/status/1460328559982129156

  7. Joshua (or anyone), do you know whether a saliva-based PCR test is accepted for international travel? Within 72 hours, of course.
Or does it depend on which lab processes it?
    Thanks.

    1. I don’t know. I do know that for the UK a rapid antigen test (not saliva based) is acceptable within 72 hours of travel. So, you do not have to get the gold standard PCR test. Also, for a return to the U.S. from overseas a rapid antigen test within 3 days suffices.

      1. Thanks. It’s for South Africa. How does one look up what they require?

(I’ll be getting the PCR “spit test” for work within 72 hours of departure, so I’m hoping it might do double duty.)

        1. Both of those help — thanks!!
I also went to state.gov, which almost agrees with what you posted! 😉
Either way, it looks promising for using my test from work.
          Thanks again.

          1. Best of luck. I know my son spoke directly to Hawaii when they went on their honeymoon. But that is a US state so I’m sure a bit easier. I’m smiling as I have a painting of a South Africa beach on the couch behind where I’m sitting. As you know, Mac and family lived there for several years when he was around 10
