  1. Thanks TK.

The FDA recommends that the J&J vaccine be used only for those 18+ or for those who are unable to locate any of the other vaccines in their area (Pfizer or Moderna). The J&J vaccine can cause thrombosis (blood clots) in some people attributing in 9 deaths so far.

  2. I’m not going to bother with figuring the daily average. As I watch these number very predictably increase after masks were removed, it makes me sick. When did we stop caring about our youngest citizens…the ones who should be able to count on us…and those who teach those children.

I will say that it seems overall MA numbers started to increase after school numbers went up ….perhaps that is coincidence or perhaps school numbers are a sort of bellweather

    1. Public transit (MBTA) and the major chain grocery stores the vast majority of riders/operators/customers/employees continue to wear masks, at least in Boston and the immediate areas even though those institutions have lifted mask mandates.

As for mask mandates, I now have my doubts if there is any real correlation with the numbers either way. Even when mask mandates were in place throughout, there were still increases in cases and hospitalizations from time to time.

      1. Vicki – I’m not Joshua, but my bet is that even if mask mandates remained in schools, the numbers would be just about the same.

        Joshua, your thoughts?

  3. Today’s numbers in Massachusetts also not good. The rise in hospitalizations, ICU usage, and deaths is concerning. https://www.wwlp.com/news/health/coronavirus-local-impact/massachusetts-covid-19-daily-report-17-new-deaths-3836-new-cases/?

Masks aren’t a panacea, but they should be mandated in schools, pharmacies, clinics, nursing homes, federal and state buildings, etc … I understand the concern of imposing mandates on private companies. But, it’s relatively easy for the state and city to impose the kinds of mandates I referred to above. Even if it saves a few lives, it’s worth it. We run the risk of normalizing what is not normal. 17 deaths today; 47 in ICU (8 more than yesterday); 24 more hospitalizations. All of these figures aren’t normal. We can live with the virus. That’s fine. But when the cases are elevated, as they definitely are, we must apply precautionary principles.

    1. Agree.

I spoke to a couple of school admins today. Both seemed to feel the escalation of cases has a lot to do with school numbers. They pointed out that flu, stomach bugs, colds, etc all spread when school numbers are high
