Friday April 21 2023 Forecast (7:02AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 21-25)

An upper level ridge nudges into our region today, and the arrival of warmer air aloft is being heralded by a fair amount of cloudiness early today, even a small batch of showers which moved through Metro Boston around sunrise and will exit the region via the MA South Shore & outer Cape Cod by mid morning, with sun increasing from west to east by midday. But while we warm up aloft, this will only translate to a warmer day today over interior locations, and not the coast. A bubble of high pressure in the Gulf of Maine will feed us an onshore wind, keeping coastal areas cooler. Still though, not a bad spring day in the broad picture. Things go downhill in the hours to follow as a trough of low pressure approaches from the west and moves into the region this weekend, first bringing lots of clouds back by Saturday, then periods of wet weather Sunday as a cold front extending from surface low pressure to our northwest will move in and slow down. Upper level low pressure will then move slowly southeastward from the Great Lakes into New England early next week, triggering an additional low pressure area on the frontal boundary still hanging around. This will keep us unsettled with cloudy conditions and lingering wet weather as well, along with cool conditions.

TODAY: Lots of clouds through mid morning including brief showers MA South Shore to Outer Cape Cod, then becoming mostly sunny midday on. Highs ranging from 53-60 coast to 60-67 just inland to 67-74 further inland. Wind variable becoming E 5-15 MPH, strongest coast.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partial sun morning. Cloudy afternoon. Highs 55-62 South Coast / Cape Cod, 63-70 elsewhere. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers arriving overnight. Lows 50-57. Wind SE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Showers likely. Slight chance of a thunderstorm. Highs 57-64. Wind SE 10-20 MPH, higher gusts..

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog and drizzle. Chance of showers. Lows 48-55. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Cloudy. Periods of light rain and drizzle. Areas of fog. Temperatures steady 48-55. Wind E-NE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Periods of light rain and drizzle. Areas of fog. Lows 42-49. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Lingering periods of rain and drizzle. Highs 48-55. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 26-30)

Drying trend middle of next week. Uncertainty remains for later in the week. Have to watch another potential low pressure area that may get close to the region from the south to thwart the drying trend, but additional drier weather should be around for the final weekend of the month (April 29-30). Temperatures below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 1-5)

Overall pattern is expected to be cool and somewhat unsettled for the early days of May with a general trough of low pressure dominating the Northeast.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

Sure looks like typical Spring weather ahead for our area. Nothing unusual and quite expected. We’ll get through it all as we always do. 🙂

    1. We made it to 64 here yesterday, but it until nearly 5PM to do so.
It was a very slow warm up.

I am thinking perhaps 65 here today, but could be cooler if
that sea breeze is stronger. We shall see. Currently 45.

  2. Thanks TK.

    Go Bruins/Celtics!

I would say the B’s need their “game 3” much more than the C’s.

    1. Agree with you in this one. Hawkes are terrible, whereas Florida isn’t. Hate it even more if we lose to a FL team right now with what’s going on down there. Lol

  3. Thanks TK. Looks like a lovely NE Spring week. I know my new grass would love a good soaking. It’s been very dry.

  4. Thanks TK
My NY Rangers looking good up 2-0 with the next two at home. Mark good luck to your Islanders tonight in a must win game three.

  5. Thank you, TK. I like the three area temp forecast. If all goes well, we head to Mt Auburn Cemetery this am and then will take a drive full of memories through Belmont which I think is your middle temp area

  6. I mentioned quite a while ago that our oldest was struggling with something that had been causing extreme vertigo. After six months, a new pcp and acupuncture, she was able to ride again for the first time yesterday. It makes me so happy to see her doing what she loves best so would like to share the news here

  7. It’s ONLY 48 here.

At Logan, the wind is East at 14 mph. That “Might” be OK to allow a decent temperature rise here. However, should that windfreshen and thus penetrate stronger in my area, then temps could be held back. Will be watching closely.

According to TK, I am in the 60-67 area and I was thinking
65 here today. Not liking the slow temp rise so far today.
Perhaps my 65 is a bit optimistic. Maybe 62 is more realistic.

We shall see. Fun to watch it regardless. 🙂

    1. Agreed. Watching some low clouds move by. Transitions from chilly shade to warm sun from moment to moment. The breeze is somewhat steady.

      1. The 1 thing in our favor today is a much milder airmass overhead. It’s 37F atop Mt Washington which is about 16F warmer than at this time yesterday.

        1. Yes, indeed. I’ll take what I got yesterday which was 64. 🙂
          We shall see. I don’t imagine you’ll see 60.

          1. Probably not 🙂

We are down at the north end of buzzards bay, camping. I don’t think marshfield or here will see 60F.

It was great yesterday, full sun and probably the 50s. The sun and a continuous camp fire made it feel great !!

  8. It’s almost 10 and we have only crept up to 49. Not liking that trend. We shall see as the sun angle increases.

  9. Any thoughts if this spring coolness will lead to a nice cool summer? Hopefully the “D” word will not return this summer either.

  10. It’s Iggy Pop’s birthday. In this photo from 1965 he looks so innocent: https://twitter.com/MichaelWarbur17/status/1649402196541206528

Here, he’s not so innocent as he performs “The Passenger” in Manchester, England, in 1977: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZth4CNaEBA&t=24s

It’s also Robert Smith’s (of The Cure) birthday. Here’s a live performance of A Forest from 43 years ago in a rather cramped Underground (a club in Allston that only lasted 16 months – Feb 1980 to June 1981 – but hosted some rather famous then avant-garde acts): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWXi2aAOVso

  11. ONLY up to 50 here. I am beginning to think we won’t even
    make 60!!!!

Logan is 48 with East wind at 14 mph.

  12. Inland areas are well into the 60’s while Logan is stuck
    at 48!! BRRRRR

And it dropped back to 49 here.

Now I honestly expected a bit more in the temperature department today. Unfortunately, where the bubble of HIGH pressure is situated, it has created a situation that is MORE
than a simple sea breeze! This is an East and NE wind with a long fetch over COLD water. CAN’T win near the coast today!

    REFRIGERATOR DAY!!!!!

  13. Vicki, it is so nice to see your oldest better! And riding a horse. Love the picture. So happy for you and your oldest! Don’t know how to make a heart emoji so I will send lots of love your way.

    1. Awwww. You are so sweet. Thank you very much.

      Thank you also Joshua.

Rainshine I just use the heart emoji on my iPad keyboard and for some reason it works.

    1. Going fishing in the AM and it looks like I will be dealing with
temps in the 40s! Ahhh SPRING in New England, the season I
DETEST!!!! I am OK with the other 3. 🙂

      1. If I was fishing tomorrow morning in Labrador City, I’d be doing this under cloudy skies and 43F. So yes, pretty close to what we’ll have here in Boston.

I’m also not a big fan of spring. But we had a string of really nice days last week.

    1. By the way, that was a nasty pitch. Good break on it, nothing the batter could do but to make contact and hit a 30 foot dribbler for an infield single.

  14. 72 in S Sutton. I’d forgotten how fun rush hour traffic is. No wonder I never mind getting behind a tractor in Sutton.

Awesome time though. Mt Auburn is such a lovely cemetery.

    1. 51.8F here in Back Bay. That’s pretty much been the high temp today, though it did briefly `spike’ to 53.6F, according to my thermometer (for about 30 minutes).

      1. Logan managed to get to 50, but not the 53 I predicted. Off by 3! And this is not likely a day they’ll have a 6 o’clock jump (even a modest one).

  15. Knowing clear sky and east wind across the entirety of MA, the temp of 49 @ Beverly and 76 @ North Adams is a dead giveaway that this is spring, if you had nothing else to go by. 🙂

  16. Absolutely BONE CHILlNG here in Dorchester. I imagine Joshua’s neighborhood is as well.

I can’t recall any one day with a straight land breeze from sunup to sundown here in Boston.

    1. You only have to go back 2 days for your land breeze from sunup to sundown. West to northwest 8-16 MPH the entire day, gusts around 20-23 MPH. All day Wednesday. And the day before that they also had a land breeze the entire day, from the southwest. 🙂

They also had a land breeze for the first half of the day YESTERDAY. Wind flipped to E in the afternoon.

  17. I don’t think we’ll have a solid overcast until sometime tomorrow afternoon, so we may end up seeing the smoke from the NC wildfire. The HRRR forecasts the plume to make it up to SNE during the morning-midday hours tomorrow, heaviest concentration to the southwest of the Boston area at least initially. So even if it’s partly sunny, there will also be smoke filtering for at least a portion of the region.

    1. I do hate wildfires from long distances ruining our skies in NE, especially if they would be beautiful blue otherwise. Even on cloudy days are sort of “ruined” as well.

92% of wildfires are caused by humans. That’s a fact by U.S. Forest Service if I’m not mistaken. 🙁

  18. I’ll repost this tomorrow. But please May I ask for prayers and positive thoughts for my brother. He was sent home from hospital, several days before Easter. He had a fall on Easter that we suspect was a TIA so was readmitted last Monday he had another TIA. Hospital didn’t have any concrete answers so he was sent to a rehab today. He arrived at the rehab and almost Immediately had a more severe incident and is now in a different hospital ER.

    Thank you all ❤️

  19. Useless fact of the day:
The Red Sox are undefeated on weekends (Saturday & Sunday games) and have yet to win a game played on a Monday or Wednesday.

  20. Vicki, I am very sorry to hear about your brother. My thoughts are with him, you, and your family.

  21. Thank you all. I can’t tell you how much you all mean to me. I was able to speak with him a bit ago and am told that CMC in Manchester is the best place to be in the area for anything cardiac related.

  22. Vicki – I just read your post about your brother. I am very sorry and hope for a positive outcome. I am keeping all involved in my thoughts.

  23. Bruins up 4-0 over the Panthers, Sox winning 4-3 against the Brewers. Only blemish this evening thus far is the Celtics’ loss to the Hawks.

    1. I keep forgetting about the NBA playoffs… 😉
Well, sort of… maybe on purpose. HAHA..
I mean go Celtics but ya know…
Go Bruins is much more important. 😉

          1. Well, technically the Bruins don’t NEED to, but you obviously make it easier heading to game 5 up 3-1 instead of with a best of 3 series.

Even the Celtics don’t “need” to, but it behooves them to do the same for the same reason.
