Saturday April 22 2023 Forecast (7:30AM)

Happy Earth Day! Take care of our world. It’s the only one we have!

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 22-26)

The mainly fair weather of the last few days becomes much less fair and increasingly foul this weekend in response to an approaching low pressure trough. The evolution of this feature over the coming days will scream “springtime!” and not meaning the kind of weather where you are thinking sunshine, warm air, and flowers. As low pressure both surface and aloft move into the Great Lakes region during the course of this weekend, first we just see lots of cloudiness but no precipitation during the day today. As an occluded front approaches the region and slows down tonight through Sunday, our rain chances go up, in the form of isolated to scattered showers tonight, then a more general ribbon of showery rain with even the potential for some embedded thunderstorms on Sunday. With still some slow eastward movement of the feature, the more widespread and heaviest activity will occur along a fairly narrow axis that will shift to allow a tapering off of the activity slowly from west to east during the afternoon and early evening. But for all intents and purposes, Sunday can be considered a “wash-out”, as the term goes. A weak low pressure area will form on the boundary as it is crossing the region, and winds that are blowing out of the east on Sunday with some moderate gusts along the coast will become lighter and more variable and it is during Sunday night when we may see some foggy weather across the region. During the first few days of the coming week, cut off upper level low pressure will drift eastward from the Great Lakes through the Northeast while surface low pressure migrates toward the Gulf of Maine then redevelops further east and north with time. This weather pattern is unsettled and cool, with a daily chance of showers – greatest chance Monday then gradually decreasing each day after.

TODAY: Mainly cloudy – a brief break of sun is possible in a few locations. Highs 53-60 coastal plain, 60-67 well inland. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers during the evening. Scattered to numerous showers arriving from west to east later at night. Lows 45-52. Wind SE-E 5-15 MPH, higher gusts along the coast by dawn.

SUNDAY: Overcast. Widespread showers and a slight chance of thunder, gradually tapering off from west to east during the course of the afternoon. Highs 48-55. Wind E 5-15 MPH, gusts 20-25 MPH in coastal areas.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog/drizzle. Chance of showers. Lows 45-52. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Highs 50-57. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Lows 43-50. Wind N-NW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Highs 51-58. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of a shower. Lows 42-49. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of a shower. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 27 – MAY 1)

Upper level low pressure’s influence remains evident with cool weather and still some occasional cloud cover and a remote shower chance April 27, then generally dry weather, cool April 28, warmer April 29 as upper level low pressure moves away and a flat ridge of high pressure aloft moves in. We’ll then see the next low pressure trough approach later in the period with the threat of a return to unsettled and cooler weather once again – timing uncertain this far in advance.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 2-6)

The weather pattern looks like it will remain trough-dominated with occasional unsettled weather and temperatures generally below normal.

    1. I’ve been hearing at least 1”+ from Boston west from the tv mets with slightly less to the south.

    2. A general 0.50-1.00 inch across the WHW forecast area.
Exceptions: Under 0.50 inch may occur over far southeastern MA including Cape Cod. Greater than 1.00 inch may occur in some of the hilly terrain from southwestern NH through central MA to northeastern CT.

This will knock down the fire threat and help reduce the ongoing dryness.

  1. Thanks TK.

Good win for the Bruins last night but no “D” by the Celtics. Both teams would be wise to win their respective game #4s tomorrow. You don’t want any potential grueling game #7s in the first round with clearly inferior opponents. Save those for future rounds.

  2. takk fyrir, TK. Icelandic; it‘s not an official EU language, but I‘m including it, as well as the following: Það lítur út fyrir að tilrauna-GFS líkanið spái snjóstormi um 6.800 klukkustundir. Slydda við ströndina, en snjór inn til landsins, meðal annars hjá Vicki, Mark, JJ, SouthCentral, og Sclarke.

  3. The smoke from that NC fire has made it up into our area. The core of it passes just to our west. Some thinned version is moving into our region now. However, we won’t see it, as it’s above the cloud deck. But it’s up there. Will be moving out tonight / early tomorrow, again unseen from here.

  4. Thank you, TK

How is your bother doing now that he is in rehab?

    JPD, how is Mrs OS?

    Ssk, how is Mrs SSK?

        1. Thank you Joshua and TK. He apparently has a UTI. I asked other hospital days ago to do a culture as he was in the bathroom every 20-50 minutes. A UTI can wreak havoc in us older folks. He takes Coumadin for blood clots and his INR is always stable. I’m think the UTI may me why his INR is off. And hence his confusion and TIAs. I know that isn’t simple but it may be simplest explanation of all.

This hospital has done more tests in less than 24 hours than the other one did in two weeks.

    1. Rehab is going pretty well.
There has been an increase in movement on his right side this week and the speech while very slow continues to improve to the point where it is much more easy to understand what he’s saying then have to strain to figure it out. He’s just a few pronunciations shy of being almost back to normal.

Next step is figuring out long-term.

  5. There was a time not long ago that the entire MBTA system (bus, subway, CR, ferry) was free for the entire Earth Day in order to encourage public transportation.

    1. Sadly, they don’t have management competent enough to even think of that, and a system that can’t even afford it at this point, with the overhaul they’re facing.

I’m a combo of a realist with a dash of optimist, but our public transportation system is currently a disgrace. While acknowledging that the city of Boston has an old system and was not the easiest place to lay out an efficient system (which was actually done fairly well considering), it didn’t have to get this bad. It could have been prevented with the right leadership to start with. Now it will take a real, real long time to get it to where it should have been…

  6. 12z ECMWF with a sleet-fest for interior SNE April 30. 😉

For the record, the previous run had high pressure and fair weather with a low to the south and a weaker system approaching from the west to arrive the next day.

Also, for the record, the ECMWF was the last global model to catch onto the block that would slow this coming system down – so it’s not doing a stellar job at the moment.

  7. Went fishing this morning in Natick, Dover and Needham.
The Charles River is pretty low for this time of year. Not sure i have ever seen it this low on this date. Sure it’s been MUCH lower in the Summer, but it is usually considerably higher this
    time of year.

  8. JPD. I am loving night agent. My youngest said she and her husband did also. I have been trying to limit what I watch to make it last. 10 episodes is just not enough. Thank you for recommending it

      1. The first of many weekends (and continued weekdays) I’m afraid. I don’t care what today’s date is! 😉

The Revs won again tonight. The other “summer” team left to root for. 🙂

  9. Torrential rain here now and a rumble of thunder as I type this, long conveyor belt of water moving south to north, with not much east ward progression. It looks like we will get quite a bit of rain in the next few hours, so far I’ve picked up 1.41” with more to come.
