Tuesday August 1 2023 Forecast (7:24AM)

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 1-5)

High pressure builds into the region today through Wednesday then offshore on Thursday. Each day will feature fair weather but with slightly different personalities due to slight detail differences. Cyclonic flow aloft allows some diurnal clouds to develop today, while Wednesday is sunnier. While both of these days are cooler than normal with low humidity, Thursday will be slightly warmer with slightly higher but hard-to-detect humidity. Friday’s our next unsettled day as a trough and frontal system approach from the west with a more humid southerly air flow. Not quite sure yet if thunderstorms become the main player or just a secondary aspect of an unsettled day, and will fine-tune this as we get closer to it. Saturday may start unsettled but look for improvement as the trough pushes to the east and its associated frontal system pulls offshore.

TODAY: Sunny start, then a sun/cloud mix. Highs 75-82. Dew point below 55. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows 56-63. Dew point below 55. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 77-84. Dew point below 60. Wind W up to 10 MPH but local coastal sea breezes possible.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Ground fog patches possible in lower elevations. Lows 57-64. Dew point below 60. Wind calm.

THURSDAY: Sunny in the morning. Partly cloudy in the afternoon. Highs 78-85. Dew point around 60. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Lows 61-68. Dew point 60+. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms. Highs 75-82. Dew point 65+. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with showers and possible thunderstorms. Areas of fog. Lows 63-70. Dew point 60+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers early, then partly sunny. Highs 76-83. Dew point 60+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to W.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 6-10)

After fair weather to round out the first weekend of August, early next week shows a turn back to unsettled and more humid conditions, but temporarily, with fair and drier weather toward the end of the forecast period. Temperatures near to below normal – no major heat indicated.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 11-15)

Look for a weak zonal flow with a slight tendency for trough over ridge, keeping significant heat out and limiting but not eliminating shower chances, but mostly rain-free weather during this time.

  1. There was mention of monarch butterflies yesterday. I can’t even remember the last time I saw one. many years for sure.

  2. Thanks TK.

There are two “Supermoons” this month. I missed the first one. Too much cloudiness. Next one will be end of the month,

    Once in a “blue” moon?

  3. Thanks, TK.

The Monarch butterfly is still around, though population had diminished in size. JPD, in the city your best bet to see them is at a community garden. The large garden fairly close to me – in the South End – has a wide variety of butterflies, including Monarchs.

    1. It is. And has diminished by about 80 percent. When we moved to Sutton seven years ago, we had many by this time. So far we have had one.

      I posted a link above

    2. I would think I might see a couple while out fishing, but sad to say I Have not seen any. I can’t remember the last time I saw one in JP. Perhaps 20 years ago or something like that. I used to see them in the yard all of the time. Not any more.

  4. We were married on the day of a special blue moon. In 1999, there were two full moons in January, on the 1st and 31st. There was no full moon in February. There were two full moons in March, on the 2nd and 31st.

We were married on March 31, the date of the second blue moon of the year, also known as April Fools Eve. 🙂

  5. Vicki, thanks for sharing the information on Monarchs. I should have read that before responding to JPD.

  6. It is chilly here. I am sitting next to open window with
short sleeve jersey on and I feel COLD!!!!

    Temperature is 72
    Dew point is 50

I’d rather it be a tad warmer, like 80 or so. 🙂

    I don’t want much, do I?

  7. JPD, not sure I’d you ever got into Suits. I just started season 9…final season…and have really enjoyed it. Even the few times I thought I was starting to lose a bit of interest, it sucked me back in.

    1. We’ve been watching it. I really enjoy it. My wife, not so much, but she is willing to watch. 🙂

      1. That is special. I’m hoping it will grow on Mrs OS. My youngest felt the same but keeps going back. I almost stopped during season 4. 5 for me back to the point I had trouble stopping for the day.

  8. Thanks Tom! I actually kept looking out my window after sunset hoping the clouds would break. Just as well since it should be completely clear this time. 🙂

  9. Dog days of August are upon us. Saw many dogs out in the park frolicking. They were not acting like these were the dog days of summer. It’s a very pleasant day for outdoor activities. But it is definitely mid-summer in terms of the light and strength of the sun.

Big question is will the Red Sox still be in the wildcard driver’s seat at the end of August as we turn the page towards fall? I’m fearful they won’t. This is an interesting team, but an extraordinarily inconsistent one. I don’t think they have the horses to be well above .500 when all is said and done (perhaps 84 or 85 wins, yet that won’t cut it), but I’d love to be wrong.

  10. Full moon is indeed tonight so nobody missed it.
August 30 will be the second full moon this month.

  11. On my walk today through Downtown Crossing I noticed some positives and negatives. The positives are seeing how well restored the 19th century Brewer Fountain is (what a gem, as nice as any fountain of its kind in Europe), some of the new restaurants and coffee shops, especially as you go down Washington Street towards Chinatown. The negatives include blight on Winter Street, between Tremont and Washington (75% of businesses are closed), and an increasing number of mostly opioid-addled young folks (not your homeless folks of yesteryear).

I did enjoy going to the old Jewelry Building at 333 Washington Street to purchase a watch battery and new band. Still the same businesses there, including some old-fashioned ones like the watch repair shop (my kind of place). When I walk into a building like that I imagine it’s 1971, I’m 6 and I’m walking with my mother who’s getting her antique clock fixed. It’s a nice memory. I wish I could tell my mother that I still go back to the same places she went to. My other siblings aren’t sentimental or old-fashioned. I am. I know it’s kind of weird, but hey we’re all different.

    1. Special memories. I love the way you bring us into your story. You have me smiling and a little teary. Thank you for sharing.

I also remember the jewelers building. And memories of going to the tea room with my mom after a day of shopping. We’d have tea and then have our tree leaves read.

Thank you Joshua. I truly believe your mom knows ❤️

  12. Thanks Joshua for sharing that 1860s Winter St. photo. I had no idea film was so good back then. It could have easily passed for the 1888 storm.

I hope at least the main Tremont and Washington Sts. were plowed that day. 😉

  13. Philip, looking at the photo again it could very well be 1888. It’s just that it was referenced as the 1860s. Regardless, it was a long time ago.

  14. Vicki, that’s a nice memory you shared of you and your mother going to the tea room.

I remember that as a treat my Mom took me and my sister to one of the Bailey’s ice cream parlors. I think there was at least one downtown which we frequented. This was in the 1971 to 1974 period.
