Sunday April 14 2024 Forecast (8:26AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 14-18)

Your mid weekend blog update is going to tell you that everything in the forecast you read yesterday is pretty much on track in the short term as we move through this holiday weekend and into the middle of the coming week. A small, fast-moving low pressure area tracks east southeastward from the Great Lakes / adjacent Canada across the Northeast today and tonight. Our sunny start to the day will transition to a mainly cloudy one with time. An initial batch of fairly light rain may accompany a warm front that pushes through the region, followed quickly by a cold front that brings rain showers and maybe even isolated thunderstorms during this evening. This system exits overnight and sets us up with a nice Patriots Day Monday. This will be favorable for early-morning battle reenactment at Lexington Green and other activities during the day, as well as the midday Red Sox game and the Boston Marathon, though it may be a bit warm for the liking of some runners. High pressure sits southwest of our region Tuesday with a fair, milder day for most areas, but another bubble of high pressure in eastern Canada will be strong enough to send a cold front down through the region during the day, which will turn the wind north and northeast by day’s end, bringing cooler air. This front will sit to our south Wednesday as low pressure heads for the Great Lakes, bringing clouds back into the region, and a wet weather threat possibly by Wednesday evening / night, and certainly during Thursday as a new wave of low pressure forms on the frontal boundary in the region.

TODAY: Mostly sunny morning. Clouds rapidly move in midday on. A brief passing period of very light to light rain possible mainly north of I-90 during the first half of the afternoon, and a better chance of rain showers west and southwest of Boston toward the end of the afternoon. Highs 57-64. Wind W to SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with rain showers likely during the evening including the slight chance of a thunderstorm. Partly cloudy overnight. Lows 48-55. Wind W to NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 61-68 except cooler Cape Cod. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 45-52. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 65-72 inland, 57-64 coast but turning cooler from north to south, especially along the coast, mid afternoon on. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to N and NE.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 43-50. Wind NE under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Increasing clouds. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT / THURSDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Temperature falling to 48-55, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 19-23)

Low pressure moves far enough away and another low in the Great Lakes is close enough to give us a push of warmer, rain-free weather for part of April 19 until a cold front swings through at night or early April 20 with showers, then a return to dry but chilly weather for much of the April 20-21 weekend. Pattern looks cool into early the following week but mainly dry.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 24-28)

Watching for unsettled weather to make a return early in the period before dry weather follows. Cooler pattern expected.

    1. Thank you JJ. I recall reading about the Minot light because it’s in the Humarock area but don’t recall the entire story. Very interesting

  1. Thanks, TK.

Despite writing not being a lucrative occupation by any stretch of the imagination, the one thing I like about it is that I learn a lot about new stuff. My latest Forbes piece is on worldwide measles outbreaks. Not only did I learn about the outbreaks themselves, I also got to be acquainted with a country I would not have known about otherwise: Kyrgyzstan. Look it up. It has absolutely spectacular landscapes.

  2. Big win for the Bruins last night. The Penguins were firing on all cylinders prior to the game, making a big push for the playoffs. By beating them, Boston hurt Pittsburgh’s chances of making it to the post-season.

Weirdly, I have more faith in the Bruins winning it all this year than I do the Celtics. This is counterintuitive, I know.

    1. Not really and you are likely correct. The Celtics have lacked something in the play offs. Killer Instinct? I don’t know, but it is something.

  3. I look forward to watching the final round of The Masters today.
This will be Verne Lundquist’s final Masters. You always associate The Masters and the 16th hole with Verne Lundquist. One of him famous calls the 1986 Masters Maybe Yes Sir when Jack Nickalus made the putt as he went on to win the Masters.

    1. I did not remember that although I’m sure Mac would. Thank you, JJ. And I am also looking forward to today.

  4. Thanks TK !

Just pulled into Bermuda, fun approach in, got to see the whole north side of the island.

Sunny, high 60s, high building in, so the winds are becoming lighter πŸ™‚

My wife and I are going to take our time and let everyone get off and then get off mid afternoon.

  5. Tom, From the image from the web cam and an image from
the Norwegian Cruise lines it sure looks like
the Norwegian Gem is one of the ships docked
at the Royal Naval Dock Yard in Bermuda.

    So, is that your ship????

    πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    ENJOY!!!!

      1. Hi Tom. Hope you are having a great time. The Pickled onion is a great spot to soak up the atmosphere in Hamilton. We have also had fun at the acquarium over the years and my daughter loved going on the rail trail a few weeks ago.

      1. Actually they don’t need more time to get home, they need the casino to open so they make more money.

  6. Unusually (for the time of year) strong gale approaching Britain and the low countries to bring lots of wind and rain. The Netherlands has already canceled flights for tomorrow. They’re expecting gusts of over 75mph at the coast.

  7. Good afternoon everyone, I know I have not been on lately but I been busy with publications and defending my thesis basically at the same time. ( I defensed this passed Friday). TK Sak what are your thoughts on hurricane season? Particularly what are your thoughts on possible steering patterns? I am honestly more concerned this year than I have since I been here on St. Thomas.

    1. I’ll be looking more closely at that soon. On the surface, heading into La Nina and with the Atlantic in the warm phase the initial idea is “active season”. But as part of the ongoing HTE we saw an odd set-up last tropical season where during El Nino the normally quiet Atlantic was active and the normally active Pacific was quiet. Will things go “opposite” again? We’ll need to weigh other factors obviously. But my initial feeling is that it will still be somewhat active in the Atlantic compared to the long term averages. As for steering, I wish we could know that in advance. Have to take that case-by-case based on the pattern with each system. But hopefully we’re in a situation where we can have some good medium range forecasts for systems that exist…

    1. Wow. What a shame. We attended often with kids. My oldest just took her kids there on a school field trip. We went for picnics many times each year when kids were younger. I don’t recall it flooding like that but then may have easily missed it.

    1. Spring blooms are about 5 to 10 days ahead of last year around here, and are looking pretty good so far.

Example: Forsythia, usually one of the first bushes to bloom, was basically a fail last year. My dad’s perfect forsythia produced TWO flowers last year – usually produces hundreds! Well, the hundreds are back and they look very good. πŸ™‚

      1. I’m seeing forsythia too. Yay.

We are well ahead of the 80s and early 90s. When we drove to Charleston during spring break, we hit NJ before seeing willows and flowering shrubs. We are also ahead of when we moved here in 2016.

  8. Love golf, like golf. Hate golf, you just cannot deny it is an amazing example of spoetsmanship. What a phenomenal match. I’m so glad I watched start to finish. And I know without a doubt there is a lot of cheering in heaven

  9. Thanks, TK.

I enjoyed looking at the sky (while not driving!) earlier today on the pike: variegated colors and textures β€” beautiful.
