Independence Day Weekend Forecast – Friday Midday Update

11:38AM

The cold air aloft and associated disturbance has wheeled its way southward rather rapidly during the morning and lots of clouds have already popped up across the forecast area. Also adjusting Monday slightly to add a slight chance of a shower or storm in southern MA, but I do not expect major problems and urge you not to cancel any plans. The balance of the Boston area forecast remains as is…

TONIGHT: Clearing. Low in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Wind light W.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. High in the middle 80s. Wind W to SW 5 to 15 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low in the upper 60s. Wind SW 5 to 10 mph.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially from 4PM to sunset. High in the middle to upper 80s. Wind SW 10 to 15 mph with higher gusts.

  1. That cold air aloft is making the sky appear a very clear dark blue, with a bunch of puffy clouds. I don’t see any rain on the radar at the moment.

    1. This reminds me a little of July 1 1988. A bit cool, unstable, not a bad day, but some areas saw scattered storms with small hail due to the cold air aloft (but no severe weather). Irony: Same day of the week. Aftermath: Summer 1988 was blistering hot from about July 4 to August 15, almost every day with a few very short breaks. Don’t think we’ll see a repeat of that summer, or last summer, this time around. However, I do like the upcoming pattern.

      1. I personally really am enjoying this day, not too hot, not too cool.

Not sure how the -NAO is effecting the pattern, but it seems to be keeping a consistent trough over New England, which has been preventing any extreme heat from coming our way. Nevertheless, the NAO doesn’t seem to want to come to positive anytime soon.

The less heat the better in my opinion.

  2. Thanks TK. Been extremely busy and haven’t had the chance to stop by.
I usually check in, even if I don’t post. Keep up the great work!!!

Storms moving south very rapidly in Maine. Will they make it here?

    Time will tell.

    1. Finally had a few showers roll through eastern MA after 9PM. Most areas saw nothing, or sprinkles. A few very isolated spots saw a brief heavier shower.

  3. Thanks again TK for the update! Today’s CPC 14-day outlook is for well above normal temps and just “normal” rainfall. It looks like we should end up with a great summer and any talk of summer 2009 can now be put to bed for good. I was concerned about a 2009 repeat briefly early on this spring, but I figured that the pattern would change eventually and it clearly has. As bad as the flooding was last spring, this spring was quite lousy overall and the devastating tornadoes made it even worse.

Have a Happy Independence Day (July 4th) everyone! 🙂

    1. Those CPC outlooks have been inconsistent. I’d go with near to above for the temps. Certainly no 2009 rerun, that’s for sure. Enjoy the holiday!

  4. Its looking like a nice day today to kick off the holiday weekend.
Tomorrow a bit unsettled with some thunderstorms in the afternoon. This does not look like a widespread severe weather outbreak but there could be some isolated severe storms which is why I am going to give a 2 right now for tomorrow. This will not be a washout but keep an eye to that sky later in the day and if the skies look threatening head indoors.

  5. Thanks for the storm index for tomorrow JimmyJames. I have been up for over an hour just sitting on the deck with a cup of tea and enjoying the beautiful morning. It’s cool and crisp for July 2 and feels great! Rainshine, is today the day you travel to Hull?? Have fun! I hope everyone else has fun plans from BBQs to a quiet time on the deck listening to patriotic music!!!!

  6. Hi TK- Its been some time since I posted I hope all is good, no surprise to see ryder gone. TK I am having a pool party here in pembroke tommorow july 3rd, the forcast has me nervous. Do you think we have a shot at a mostly dry day. And also for the fireworks around 9pm. Thank’s Tk. Happy 4th.

    1. John, you have a shot at lucking out, of stuff holding off at least through the main daylight. Not sure about the 9PM just yet. It’s going to depend on development and movement of any line(s) and how solid they are. We just kind of need to watch that one as it goes.

    2. Hi John – nice to see you here!!! I’m guessing and hoping work has been very busy for you. Happy fourth and enjoy your party!!!

      1. Hi Vicki, thank’s for the kind words. And yes work is busy. I will not be posting as much in the summer as I do in the winter. I just hope It does not rain during the day here as I have about 25 people coming over for the pool party. It is really cloudy here in Pembroke now, I do not like that. Just hoping tomorrow the rain stays away. Have a great 4th Vicki to you and your family.

        1. Thank you John. 25 wet people indoors is no fun. I’ll hope for any storms to miss you

  7. From reading this morning’s NWS Discussion, they are definitely hinting at strong to severe thunderstorms with very heavy rain and flooding possible in most areas at some point during the afternoon and evening. No mention of winds or hail however.

Anyone who will be out of doors BBQing or at the beach, etc. tomorrow afternoon should make plans to head indoors or at least safe shelter quickly.

  8. Neat sky today……clear at the ocean’s edge as the seabreeze melts away any cumulus clouds that try to approach and looking just inland, towering cumulus floating by from north to south. That seabreeze helped to push the milder water into the beach today, the water was comfortable and lots of people were in the ocean.

    1. Latest Boston Buoy obs. water temp = 68F! 🙂

Speaking of water temps I was watching the CBS Saturday Early Show this morning and their met Lonnie Quinn mentioned that in Texas the air temp is expected to be 98F with a water temp of…88F!

That Gulf of Mexico is hot stuff….lol (ouch)!

      1. My son in law said the Humarock water was unusually warm yesterday. 88 is too warm for me. Feels like dirty bath water 🙂

Tom I’ve been watching the clouds all day. They really are towering and multidimensional if that makes sense. Rainshine had a great day to head to Hull. I know she likes the clouds too

        1. I found growing up in Marshfield the ocean seemed to be the warmest in August. So cold in July and warm in August, If that makes any sense. 88 is warm for that water I would think. All the kids in my neighborhood have been swiming in my cool pool water, can’t imagine
what they would think if the the water was that warm.
