Thunderstorm Threat Sunday, Nice 4th!

8:08PM

We all know how tough it is to get 3 days in a row with no shower or storm threat in the summer. Not going to happen this weekend either. But still, despite the threat of storms Sunday, we are not looking at a washout of a day, and Independence Day itself on Monday looks as if it will be rain-free in most locations.

The fairly “normal” July pattern continues into next week, with no major heat in sight.

Boston Area Forecast Details…

TONIGHT: Mostly clear to partly cloudy. Areas of fog inland valley and wetland locations. Becoming humid. Low 62 to 67. Wind light S.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy and hazy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 10AM. Scattered showers and thunderstorms from 2PM on with a couple of organized storm lines possible. Any storms may produce gusty winds, small hail, and frequent lightning. Isolated severe storms are possible. Anybody with outside plans should be very alert to the sky and look for approaching storms from the west at any time. Warm and muggy. High 81 to 86.  Wind SW to S 5 to 15 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms early. Becoming partly cloudy but areas of fog late. Mild and muggy. Low 64 to 69. Wind light W.

MONDAY – INDEPENDENCE DAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers or thunderstorms are possible mainly along and south of the Mass Pike first thing in the morning and again during the afternoon and early evening. Most locations will be rain-free. Warm and humid. High 82 to 87. Wind S 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 65. High 85.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 66. High 86.

THURSDAY: Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low 68. High 84.

  1. No change in the thunderstorm index which remains at 2 which is MODERATE Level Activity meaning isolated severe weather but not widespread. This will not be an all day washout but keep an eye to the sky and if it looks threatening head indoors.
Monday thunderstorm index at 1 which is MINOR since I don’t think there will be severe storms and just like Sunday this will not be a washout so don’t cancel plans.
Whatever your plans are I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend!

  2. Some trolls over on the WBZ blog are complaining about today’s weather. Here in Boston there was a fair amount of sunshine with some cloudiness at times, but overall it was a great day. Too bad today wasn’t July 4th. Unfortunately tomorrow July 3rd looks potentially scary especially during the afternoon and evening. Hopefully no “severe” storms occur if at all.

Jimmy, keeping my fingers crossed that your thunderstorm scale will not be needed at all come Monday….I will be BBQing that day. Keep us posted as always! 🙂

Also, as for the WBZ trolls’ complaints to Barry and Todd on today’s weather….was it THAT horrible across parts of SNE today? Did I miss something? If in fact I did, I must be very lucky. Definitely a top 10 day considering the moderate humidity.

  3. Philip I was wondering the same thing. I thought it was a good day.
I am hoping the thunderstorm index will not be needed on Monday but there is a chance so I had to mention it. I will be at the annual family 4th of July picnic that day but the good news is it will not be an all day washout so I am worried. Either will be eating outside or inside which we have done plenty of times over the years.
It looks like the Farmers’ Almanac will get partial credit if there are thunderstorms tomorrow but not the violent thunderstorms they predicted. In fact they are predicting quite a few thunderstorm chances for us this month.

  4. Jimmy, if the current pattern continues with warm but not quite “hot” temps in the 80’s with cold fronts approaching every few days, then the Farmer’s Almanac might be somewhat on target. After all, even a broken clock is correct twice a day. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Jfyi…the FA forecast for Feb. 5-8, 1978 was “sunny & mild”, lol (no joke). 🙂

  5. Will see how it plays out. As I said the other day I don’t buy the 80% accuracy they claim. I think its more in the 20%-25% range. June 1st-3rd they predicted fair conditions and we know what happened unfortunatley.
The almanac is a fun read but take their predictions with a huge grain of salt.

  6. The life of a parent with 2 young kids 🙂 ……..I had a chance last evening to look at some Atlantic Ocean Sea Temp Anomoly maps, and while the whole ocean seems to be running a bit above normal, the bullseye for well above normal temps is the area of the Mid-Atlantic and up into the coastline of New England. My theory is that the warm water is being driven in by the overall pattern, which has featured a lot of light wind flow or onshore flow near the coast. I think the Boston Harbor Buoy temp has been to 68F or 69F this season and the warmest I can ever remember seeing is 72F. The 80F water temp currently is at the southern tip of NJ at Cape May and low to mid 70s are common just south of New England. This will be interesting to watch as the summer progresses.

    1. Tom – when we were in Hull yesterday, we didn’t go in the water, but I did put my hand in the water – although it was the bay, not the ocean – and it did feel surprisingly warmer than I thought it would be. I know there has to be a lot of ingredients for a hurricane to hit around here – but the higher temps. of the water in general around here has me a little concerned re: hurricanes.

Enjoy the rest of the wknd.!

  7. Vicki – thanks for your posts yesterday. We had quite a busy day yesterday so by the time we got home we were too tired to do anything but sit back and relax. Our day yesterday was busy but fun. We did go to Hull – to the bay area and had a quick picnic in the car (we took a paper bag to throw away anything – keeping the environment clean) and then we took a quick walk along the bay. The wind was coming from the east so we couldn’t smell any salt air where we were as the bay faces west – but the view of Boston in the distance was fantastic – and making it more beautiful was the fantastic sky. The clouds were spectacular – big puffs of white against a dark blue. We didn’t spend too long there as it is a residential area and we didn’t get to Pemberton Point where the high school is because we had other plans. We will go back another time. It wasn’t 100% sunny in Hull but as we drove north and west later, there was less sun. After being in Hull we went to a friend’s home in Millis for a barbecue which was fun and the weather was perfect. Not totally sunny or too hot or humid.

Today we are just going to take it easy – just as well as there could be some active weather – hope it doesn’t get severe. Tomorrow we are going to another barbecue – this time in our neighborhood.

Vicki – are you going to Humarock this wknd.? If you do and whatever you do – enjoy. Hope your son enjoys riding on his bike in NH this wknd., too.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the holiday weekend – and as usual, I will be keeping my eyes to the sky!

    1. Hi Rainshine – what a wonderful day you had and the weather was perfect. I knew you’d love the clouds. As you know I love nostalgic trips!!!

Son ended up taking my car. He absolutely has to be at work tomorrow or he loses his job (that’s the state:) since it’s a holiday. He said he would have worried all weekend if he took the bike. I don’t mind since I don’t like the bike 🙂 Turns out even with the small chance of storms tomorrow he made the right decision.

We won’t head to the beach. We have various events planned with the kids today and tomorrow which will be tons of fun.

      Enjoy the day!!!!
