Thursday Forecast

7:25AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 17-21)
High pressure controls today’s weather and results in a “top 10” day with sunshine and low humidity and a nice diurnal warm-up after a cool start. A warm front will approach the region Friday with waves of showers arriving during the day and lasting into the nighttime hours, with a humid air mass arriving at night and into Saturday. A cold front will slog across New England during Saturday morning and early afternoon but it looks like conditions will not be all that favorable for anything more than a few isolated showers. High pressure moves back into the region Sunday-Monday with fabulous summer weather, with the early outlook being favorable for sky conditions for the solar eclipse on Monday afternoon, which will be a partial in southern New England with 60-65% of the sun covered. More on this in upcoming posts.
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 75-80 coast, 80-85 interior. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 55-60 interior, 60-65 coast. Wind light variable.

  1. When do you head back to the classroom, Tom?

We have three professional days August 29-31 with the kids arriving on Tuesday, September 5. Soccer starts for my son a week from today.

    1. Hi Captain.

Teachers return Monday August 28th for meetings, then we have 3 school days on Tuesday thru Thursday, the 29th thru 31st. I like this because it usually helps the school year end around June 15 to 20, even with a few snow days.

I’ll be in school next week setting up my room. 🙂 🙂

      1. Tom do you have another in service day on Friday September 1st and that is why the kids are only there Tues through Thurs that week.

        1. No 🙂

There’s no school on the Friday before Labor Day, so it is a 4 day weekend.

It sets the students up to have a 3 day school week, then a 4 day school week, then a 5 day week. A nice ramp up for all.

    1. Are you on FB? There is a phenomenal photographer in sutton that I have become friends with. I have a lot of her photos. I can put you in touch or would be happy to ask her for you.

    2. You need to use a solar filter, you should never look into the solar eclipse even within a camera so you should use a tri-pod as well.

  2. Thanks TK.
I wish all schools would start the day after Labor Day. I am not a fan of going a couple days then having a long weekend and having to start back up again.

  3. Tom I have never heard that before with a school system but the way you explained it I think its something more school systems should consider.

    1. While I much prefer Captain’s traditional beginning of the new school year, I do agree somewhat on Tom’s district schedule given the stupid 180-day rule and snow days. Those 180 days should not be so hard-and-set and should be waived depending on weather or other circumstances during the school year.

      1. Even though I am no educator, IMHO a kid who goes to school 177 days for example is no more at risk than one who had the complete 180 days. My bet is that there would be no difference in test scores.

        1. Not a teacher but one of the best school systems in the world has far fewer learning hours and days. Also, limited if any standardized tests, far more free time, and teacher empowerment…not to mention greater pay.

  4. The last couple days of school I remember when I was a student we did fun activities as the grades closed for the final marking period a week before school was over.

  5. Has anyone noticed anything odd about some maple trees in the area? Mine has browning drying up leaves and dropping like its mid autumn. I’ve noticed this with many other maples too. Can’t be drought so must be a disease or fungus of some sort?

    1. Mine looks ok to me…leaves perfectly normal for this time of year. Of course I am hardly an expert on trees.

    2. We had it in Framingham before we moved. If it is the same, it is tar spot disease.

We don’t have a lot of maples here. We are a new neighborhood so most established trees are surrounding…enough that we don’t have to rake 🙂

The gypsy moths did a ton of damage to those. Keith actually noticed it in a photo I’d posted on FB and it took that for me to actually notice since it happened so gradually.

          1. Thanks for the info Vicki on the tar spot disease. It appears my maple has this plus the leaves are dark brown on the edges and wilting and dropping which is a sign of drought damage. I must have bad or compacted soil in the back and the tree isn’t getting enough water from the ground. The tree hasnt been the same since it was completed defoliated 3 years ago by the green worms. It’s the only tree in my yard and I fear it won’t last much longer

            1. We had two young maples in framingham that sound similar to yours. They struggled after the winter worms. I don’t know if they recovered with the drought on top of that. I suspect they did not.

              Good luck.

  6. Here is what I would like to see for a school calendar.
School starts the day after Labor Day
Two full days of school Thanksgiving week. Five day weekend for Thanksgiving so you give the families all day Wednesday who have to go a distance for the holiday. Here in CT a lot of the schools do half day the day before Thanksgiving. In addition school will let out on December 22nd or 21st if the 22nd falls on Saturday so again you give the families a full day to travel the day before Christmas Eve.
February just make it a long weekend for Presidents Day and not a whole week off
March we have SBAC and CMT testing in CT. I wish it would go back to the old way where all the testing took place in a two week period when scantrons were given to take the tests. After the two week period or when the testing is over depending on if any snow days happen there will be a five day break from school which I think both adult and student deserve. This break will replace April vacation.

    1. I agree with a ton of that JJ. The only problem is Framingham did do away with Feb and Apr and replaced with March years ago. Teachers were against it because they said Feb breaks illness pattern where a lot of students were out. They turned out to be right and, after a study, they went back to two vacations. Sutton has only presidents day and that tuesday. I cannot judge how that works because last year the flu vaccine didn’t work so illness was out of control in all schools.

  7. We used to have a whole week of in February then the winter of 95-96 happened with over 100 inches of snow and school was called off so many times we went to June 30th and still had to have two days taken away from April vacation. It was decided to just give a long weekend to avoid a situation like that happening again. Now after the 9th snow day days are taken away from April vacation although in 2012-2013 school year there were 10 times school off between Sandy and snow days and a lot of the teachers made vacation plans and there would not be enough coverage so they decided to not take away that Friday of April vacation and add the day in June.

  8. Hope you are enjoying a great day today!

I’m enjoying it to the best of my ability. I’ve been getting through the week the best I can without the use of either of the 2 cars I have.

The first I quit using because I’m not investing any more into fixing it and the transmission is essentially gone and of course now the battery is dead, so that can go byebyes soon.

The second one has a transmission on its last legs. It’s my mom’s car so now the decision to replace the trans or replace the car with something smaller is next. My car will be replaced within days so that much is good!

Both of these cars came to my use for very little $ and I didn’t choose them, but I’m grateful for having spent so little on getting them, but I would never have chosen these if it were up to me.

I’m going with Honda next. 😀

I’ll be looking over new info and making some comments on weather soon!

  9. Cars, for us, are transportation. We have two teenage drivers. There are four cars in the fleet, 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2003. They keep running and running. The bodies on the car will rot before the engines die!

As far as school year calendars, I have no control over them, so I don’t concern myself with worrying about them. I go when they tell me to go.
If I had my druthers, I’d rather start in late August with kids and get out earlier in June. I am tired in June and need a break. June is my favorite month of the 12 and I don’t want to be in a hot classroom with students who’d rather be elsewhere. I am ready to start teaching again now, so, bring it on!
I teach high school and 60% of our students are back next week anyway practicing sports.
At our high school and we end the year with final exams, so we don’t have field days, etc. If I teach sophomores in the second semester, I do lose my 10th graders for at least five days for the MCAS. I teach Spanish, so I am not an MCAS subject.
The state will not waive the 180-school day regulation, no matter how bad the weather is. TK keeps writing “watch the tropics” for the end of the month. Let’s not the school year with days to make up because of a tropical system!
That happened with Hurricane Irene in 2011.
Those are my thoughts on the subject. This will be my 35th year as a teacher. I love what I do. I love my students and love the challenges!!!

  10. Cars: In terms of buying them, I’ve always been a believer that buying used all the time is the way to go. The sweet spot is right in the middle, where you aren’t shelling out the kind of big time money needed to buy a new car, but you also aren’t paying so little that the car is likely complete junk. You can probably find a good starter car that will last a few years for 2k, but it will have been made sometime around the turn of the century. A bit higher, like 8-12k, should be enough to get a used car on the newer side that would last even longer and be more comfortable. Having two is always a good bet in case of repairs, but sometimes you get unlucky.

  11. I keep mentioning watching the tropics because the pattern is very close at times to idea to bring one up the East Coast. But that doesn’t mean we’re immediately threatened. We’d need a storm in the right place and still have to get the pattern to line up. It’s just in a zone where that can happen with not a whole lot of “effort”.

  12. Going to Fenway tonight–don’t mind a few showers (my seats are under cover) but loathe rain delays. Thoughts on getting the game in without delays?
