Getting A Handle On August

7:21PM

Normally I will go out 7 days with my forecast on Sunday night in “The Week Ahead” blog. Today, I’m doing a version of that, but with an even further glance ahead to the overall pattern I expected through the middle of the month (or basically the next 2 weeks).

For my meteorologist readers: NAO going more negative at this time and staying there for the most part until around August 10, then coming back toward neutral or even slightly positive as we get to mid month, along with negative PNA.

For my non-meteorologist readers: The pattern of no major heat and occasionally unsettled weather will persist until around August 10, at which time we will become more likely to see late-summer episodes of HHH weather as the Bermuda High setup may become established for a period of time. This pattern also makes us need to watch for tropical activity in the Atlantic, as it can help storms approach the East Coast.

Boston Area Forecast

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. High 70-75 coast, 75-80 inland. Wind light SE.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Low clouds redevelop. Low 62-67. Wind light SE.

SATURDAY: Low clouds melt away but variable mid level clouds mixed with sun. A few building clouds especially N-NW of Boston in the afternoon with an isolated shower possible. More humid. High 75-80 coast, 80-85 inland. Wind SE-S up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Periods of rain mainly after midnight. Muggy. Low 65-70. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Cloudy with periods of rain early, then mostly cloudy to partly sunny. High 75-80. Wind SE-E 5-10 MPH.

MONDAY:  Variably cloudy. Chance of thunderstorms. Low 67. High 83.

TUESDAY:  Partly sunny. Chance of showers. Low 66. High 81.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 66. High 78.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of thunderstorms. Low 68. High 84.

  1. Thank you TK

There is a feel – almost a smell – to the air of end of summer and early fall. It was there last night too. The breeze starts a little warm then has a coolness. I love it.

    1. I completely agree. I love that feel and smell now, but is used to make me sad because back in the school years it would remind me that the days of summer were numbered… I will always be more a fan of the 1st half of summer versus the 2nd half, but I love all of it.

I do not think we are done, however, with the early-mid summer feel, as noted in my blog. I think at least another episode of HHH is pretty much a lock, the question is when it will happen.

      1. My mom never liked fall and I couldn’t understand why until I had kids and they had to go back to school. I loved when they were on summer vacation and we could do anything we wanted. There is a great freedom about summer that brings back great memories

        1. Vicki, I would think that fall is a parent’s dream until Thanksgiving break. Around this time, there is a tv commercial for Staples with a father dancing around the store pushing a shopping cart and putting in school supplies while his two kids (boy and girl) moping along behind him. I don’t have kids myself, but it’s a hilarious commercial IMO. 🙂

          1. Hahaha you’d think but I always loved my kids home with no homework obligations so we could just go places and see things and enjoy each other

          2. Oh and I was always more excited than they were for a snow day. Part of the problem is I forgot to grow up in some ways 🙂

  2. I am not digging the forecast!! I saw the NAO going negative to my dismay! I don’t see any washouts at least. Any thoughts on what would be the best beach day?

  3. Emily has completely dissipated as of 5:00 pm obs. according to the HPC. Should the now “depression” energize, will she be named “Emily” again, or does it go on to the “F” named storm? Even though we are just starting the month of August and that September is the peak month for hurricanes, it is going to be interesting if it will end up being an “active” season or just going through the alphabet with a bunch of tropical “duds”. Actually fine by me on the latter since I am not much of a fan of hurricanes.

Thanks TK for the evening update! I am disappointed though that HHH temps will be back soon…looking forward to October to say the least.

  4. I also like the beginning of summer better than the last half, too. Always kind of sad to see summer end – summers sometimes seem shorter than the winters around NE. ‘Though I don’t like the idea of HHH weather returning – especially if it is more for than 2 days – I know that Fall is getting closer.

Mixed emotions on any hurricanes up here – definitely don’t want to see any destruction or harm to anything or anyone, but it’s been a long time since we have had even a tropical storm. Wouldn’t mind seeing some tropical action up here. (hope no one takes offense at that!)

    1. Rainshine, I believe that we had a tropical storm on the day of Senator Ted Kennedy’s funeral back in August 2009. It produced drenching rains and some wind but no real damage.

      1. Philip – you are right. Now that you mention it, I remember that.

And maybe there have been other tropical systems in the past few yrs. that I have forgotten – I am not sure about that.

    2. I feel the same way – even last year watching for the hurricane (what was it’s name?? Earl??) was exciting. I don’t want destruction but there’s just something about a storm.

      1. I think it was Earl.

I think TK mentioned at some point that someday we might be able to post photos on this blog. I have a few photos from a few months ago of an approaching thunderstorm. I am looking forward to seeing people’s photos of the weather.

Hope everyone enjoys the wknd.! Weather-wise it looks like a 50/50 wknd.

        1. as an off topic remark – we are trying J J McKays for dinner. We’d forgotten about it until you mentioned it the other day. Thanks!

          1. Enjoy your meal! I have gotten Roast Prime Beef for dinner and a Turkey Club for lunch in the past and I was pleased with that.

On my birthday we went to the Villa and got Chicken Parmiagana which was delicious.

We were out this morning and went by the Prime Grill – that is on our list to try in the near future.

          2. My husband loves the villas chicken parm and that says a lot since he lived in Rome during his high school years. We like Stephen Anthonys too at the wayside country store

Sorry everyone for the restaurant talk :(. But I love finding new local places

  5. Fall time is the best time of year, better yet from about Aug 15th to Christmas time is my favorite time of year, I don’t see many if any major heatwaves (90+) for the remainder of the summer which is great news. Rain Sunday maybe a half inch in spots. Have a great day!! 

  6. This wonderful site and the nice people who post on it have provided a daily diversion from my mom’s failing health as a result of cancer. Though I haven’t met many of you, I am appreciative of the fun and sometimes passionate weather discussion that has given me a bit of normalcy, especially the last week or two…….. My mom passed away today, at peace, a little after noon……… I look forward to posting again soon about one my favorite interests, our earth’s weather…… Tom

    1. Tom, I would like to pass along my condolence to you and your family…hope to hear from you again soon.

    2. Tom, I am so sorry. My feelings go out to you and your family. At least she went in peace. My prayers are with you and your family and I look forward to your posts when you can.

    3. Tom my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. May God bless you all. Your mom is at peace and she was so very lucky to have you with her. I hope someday when the pain lessens just a bit you’ll see her smile when you look up to the clouds and sky.

      Fondly

      Vicki

  7. Tom,

My deepest condolences for your loss. She will be with you everytime you look up at our weather. God bless you and your family during this difficult time.

    Hadi

  8. Not to take anything away from Tom’s loss, but check out Melissa’s new photo of herself next to her morning blog! 🙂

    1. A very high school yearbook-ish picture. Actually, when I used to go hang out with Barry at the weather office at WBZ, there was a hallway there with pictures of all the news anchors that look something like that. I think many of them are black and white, unless it’s been changed since. I’ll have to ask Barry…

  9. Tom,

My family and I are very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts will be with you and your family. I echo what may have said above. We look forward to your posts again when you are ready, and in the mean time know that we are all thinking of you.

  10. To all… I am going to post a new blog in a little while with an updated forecast for the weekend and beyond. I’m still a little unclear how the timing goes on Sunday with the areas of wet weather. There may be a little gap between the next 2 updates as I will be at Hampton/Salisbury/Newburyport all day and most of the evening Saturday. As some of you may have heard Barry say on his forecasts on WBZ, there is a huge fireworks display in Newburyport, at Cashman Park at 9:15PM on Saturday. I believe Mr. Burbank will be somewhere nearby watching, and I know I will be. Who knows, I may even run into him there. Looks like wet weather will hold off for that display, which is part of the Yankee Homecoming Week. There’s also fireworks scheduled for Beverly MA on Sunday night. Not sure if Mother Nature is going to cooperate for those ones yet, but we shall see.
