  1. Thanks TK for the update! Don’t beat yourself up over the timing of the rain. I don’t believe any of the other mets predicted rain this early, especially for eastern sections of SNE. AFAIC the sooner the rain leaves, the more likely my rotten tree will be able to come down tomorrow. I don’t want to have to reschedule.

    1. Good luck! I think we’ll be mostly done by dawn with rain, not to say there cannot be a leftover shower in the morning and a shower or storm in the evening. Much of tomorrow will be rain-free.

  2. ThanksTK

Did not turn out too bad of a week!! You kept me optimistic the other day. I also was keeping an eye on the models and was happy to see the rain tonight, I bet it will end even being decent tomorrow.

Need some advice from everyone, since the baby have not really hit any beaches so wondering what you recommend within an hour drive south of town that would be nice?
    Thanks

    1. Hadi, go to Nelson Park in Plymouth. My wife took our kids there this weekend and had a blast. There is a lot to do for the kids there. Google it and find out more info.

    2. Sounds like you got a nice recommendation for a beach. Also, a portion of tomorrow may turn out to be quite a nice summer day (partly sunny, 80+, albeit a bit humid).

    3. Hadi,

If your willing to add on another 30 to 45 minutes to your drive, there’s also the Bay Side Beaches on Cape Cod. They are good for the little ones because there aren’t any steep slopes to the water, no bug waves to worry about, the water tends to be warm and the tide goes in and out real far, so you get time to swim and time to have a huge beach.

There are many beaches like Corporation beach in Dennis, Skaket beach in Orleans and First Encounter in Eastham…….It does cost about 15 dollars to park, but the area is beautiful. Good luck wherever you end up and I hope you get a good beach day.

  3. Thanks TK for your response regarding Bob Ryan. It’s amazing that he stayed at one station for 30 years like our Barry (33) especially since most tv bigwigs want “youth and glitz” rather than gray-haired experience.

TK, has Barry hinted to you one way or the other regarding “retirement”? It is a day I personally dread, but I guess has to happen sooner or later…and I imagine those WBZ blog trolls don’t help either. I have also noticed that Harvey hasn’t been around as much this summer. Not totally sure but it seems he has been taking like every other day off? I could very well be mistaken on that.

Anyway, I would love to see Barry on air for another 2-4 years at least! 🙂

    1. I can’t speak for Barry regarding his career path, but if I were to guess, I think we’ll see Barry for some time to come. 🙂

Who knows, he may even drop by this blog soon!

And I’m sure Harvey Leonard has loads of vaca time to take. He’s enjoying it I’m sure!

  4. TK,

We are thrilled having you!! Given that, it would be way cool to have Barry stop by.
I truly believe that he is the best in the business.

And thank you again for this awesome forum.

Any thoughts on possible convection for today? Looks like there are some parameters that could possibly impede it.

    1. I think it may be too stable in eastern MA. I’d be surprised if anything survives inside 495 other than a very brief window of time after sunset when the wind has gone west and we have just enough lift around with the frontal boundary.

  5. The tree removal service was able to come on time this morning as scheduled. Thankfully the heavy rain moved along nicely before sunrise. I am very glad that I had my tree cut down because it was very rotten at the bottom and it could very well have been a disaster either to my house or to the general public along my street. I became concerned about the tree even last year mostly because of it leaning over so much…now I understand “why” it was leaning. Another upside is that come fall I won’t have as many leaves to rake. 🙂

As for this morning’s storms, I was somewhat surprised. I thought those downpours late last evening were going to be the last. I was awoken a little before 4:00 am. It was mostly downpours, but there would be an occasional loud thunder clap. About a couple minutes after the rain completely stopped, there was one final blast…scared the heck out of me. I just thought it odd with no more rain falling.

  6. My daughter said we had tremendous downpours at about 11:00 last evening – I apparently slept through them. But I was awakened at about 1:30 by some thunder and a fair amount of lightning but heavy rain and what sounded like some hail.

TK – please do not feel obligated in any way and I truly mean that. My son has been impressed by the weather forecasts I’ve been relaying to him from you. He uses them for his camping and for his motorcycle trips (or to borrow my car when he can’t use the bike:)

Is there a way he could have a link to the blog. I’m not sure he’d post anything but do believe he’d check the forecasts and you might prefer to have anyone who belongs also post which I also totally understand.

      1. Thanks so much, TK. His name is Scott – since we have a Scott I’ll ask him to use either another name if he does post or ScottB – something different.

  7. As for having Barry drop by on the blog….absolutely! It would also be nice if the other members of the WBZ Wx Team (including Terry) would contribute on occasion as well.

There are some good posters currently on the WBZ blog and it would be nice if they could post over here as well, especially for the upcoming winter…not all are trolls. 🙂

  8. Sever Storms Center current thinking is for low chance of severe storms, but is still
    looking for some storms:

    Latest outlook:

    …NORTHEAST…
A SURFACE COLD FRONT CONTINUES TO MOVE EASTWARD ACROSS NY…AND WILL
AFFECT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND LATER THIS AFTERNOON. DEWPOINTS IN THE
60S AND COOL TEMPERATURES ALOFT MAY PROVIDE SUFFICIENT INSTABILITY
FOR SCATTERED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. POCKETS OF STRONGER HEATING
MAY ALSO HELP TO STEEPEN LAPSE RATES AND LEAD TO LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS
AND HAIL IN THE STRONGER STORMS. HOWEVER…WEAK CONVERGENCE ALONG
THE FRONT AND LACK OF STRONG INSTABILITY ALL SUGGEST THAT THE
OVERALL COVERAGE OF SEVERE STORMS WILL BE LOW. THEREFORE WILL
MAINTAIN ONLY LOW PROBABILITIES OF SEVERE TODAY.

    1. Hi Old Salty,

Small storm near/east of Albany, NY. Will be interesting to see if others pop. The visible satellite sure shows a lot of building cumulus just west of New England.

  9. Interesting that since a little after meteorological summer began, the NAO has been either close to neutral or negative. It is quite negative now, but is forecast to sharply trend towards neutral over the next week and then become positive in a week and a half or two. Wonder is this is also why there seems to be signals of heat returning to the northeast in about two weeks.

      1. Hi Vicki.

I hope so ! I’ll be trying to get to the beach a couple more times during that week, then school starts back on Monday, August 29th (for the teachers), then the students have school Tuesday-Thursday. I like how we have those 3 school days prior to Labor Day, it helps us get out in mid June even when we get 4 or 5 snow days, which we seem to average down here by the ocean.

        1. I can’t believe school begins in only a few weeks. I didn’t realize you are a teacher. My youngest’s husband is planning to teach English. He just went through the first rounds of MTel (sp?)

          1. I hope the MTEL went well. That is a pretty long, exhaustive test, which I was fortunate to get through. I then passed the middle school math test, which got me a preliminary teaching license and with more schooling and now a Master’s in Education, have earned a Professional License. I wish your son-in-law well !!

  10. Tom,

Thanks. I see it. I was just outside. Really soupy out there.
IF we don’t get that East wind, I’d wager we’ll have some activity later.
IF we get the East wind, activity will certainly die before reaching coast.

    I’ll be watching.

    Have a good one.

    1. It is soupy, I think this is the 2nd day in the last 3 or 4 where its been very humid and the wind has been N or NW, strange. Interesting winds though, the Maine Coast and northeast Mass have light NE winds, coastal Mass from Boston to the south shore has North, northwest winds and interior Mass has westerly winds. Maybe at some point today, these varied surface winds will add to further convergence.

  11. Tom,
Interesting thought. I don’t think it will add anything.
It will be the lapse rates and the lift from the approaching front and
of course the soupy air will help as well.

    We shall see.

A new storm just popped way South of Albany.

  12. Does anyone else feel Pete B. is being a little over dramatic about Sunday in his most recent blog post?

    1. IMO, too dramatic. But, it is a blog, in which one should be more free to express what’s on the mind. 🙂

  13. DS,

I agree. He is a bit over the top shall we say.
    A biggie, biggie, biggie????????

I checked the GFS….so what? It might rain. big deal.

  14. Took the words right out of my mouth, OS.

I hate to have a one track mind right now, but my head won’t let me think about anything else — Anyone have any insight into the end of next week (19-20)? It’s my wedding week and I’m on pins and needles. At this point I’m hoping for a “between storms” scenario.

  15. As a contrast, here is what the NWS had to say:

A COLD FRONT WILL SLIDE THROUGH THE REGION THIS EVENING. SCATTERED
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ALONG AND AHEAD OF THIS
FRONT. HIGH PRESSURE WILL THEN BRING DRY AND PLEASANT WEATHER
THURSDAY INTO SATURDAY…BEFORE THE NEXT SYSTEM LIKELY BRINGS HEAVY
    SHOWERS BY SUNDAY.

  16. DS,

If you trust the GFS long range (LOL!), then
that weekend looks to be WET. However, I wouldn’t
place much stock in it at this time.

  17. It is bright and sunny right now in Sudbury with a picturesque sky – lots of clouds in various shades of gray – darker to the south. And we just had a brief shower while the sun was out! Thus – my “name” – rainshine! 🙂

Vicki – I am looking forward to seeing a post from your son on this blog.

And – I am looking forward to hearing from Barry on this blog! 🙂

    1. Hi rain shine. We will see I know my boy and he has trouble answering phone messages and txts. I’m not sure if blogging is in his vocabulary but I know he’s appreciated TKs forecasts. :).

  18. We are sitting on our deck and as I look west, I can see the cirrus being blown off the thunderstorm to our west, with the western horizon looking fairly dark. We think we can hear the distant rumble of thunder every once in a while. It is fairly cool here, with a strong seabreeze here. The high clouds are moving in one direction and the low clouds are flowing in from the ocean in the other direction.

    1. Yes, us too Hadi. About ten minutes ago, we were thinking we were hearing thunder, but now, its unquestionable. Individual towering cumulus clouds to our northwest and the western horizon is very dark with some flashes of lightning and yet, still a cool ocean breeze.

  19. The storm for Sunday-Monday is capable of producing 1-3″ of rain in a widespread area. Certainty is fairly high, just nailing down which areas (Northern or Southern New England) will get the highest amounts.
Enjoy the next few days, going to be very comfortable.

  20. With sunset and encroaching darkness, lightning is not getting closer, it is moving right to left, yet is is growing more noticeable in the increasing darkness.

  21. OK, now its raining, with big convective raindrops. The southern sky is occasionally lit up with flashes of lightning, followed by a 15 second count of thunder. As enthusiastic as I am about the weather, I’ve never cared for lightning. It was a neat sunset thought, with the northern sky full of illuminated cumulus clouds…..It is August 10th and my grass is still growing, which in the ten years I have been in Marshfield, is a record.

    1. Ii have lived through tornados, blizzards and even lost my home to the Northridge Earthquake. But of all the events, hurricanes give me the CREEPS!

      1. I have not lived through an earthquake, but I was in SW Florida in 2004 for a hurricane and my guess I would take that any day over an earthquake:) the tropics will be bust over the next 8 weeks or so.

  22. Interestingly enough, today’s NWS Climatological Data for Logan does not record “thunder”. Well at my house in Dorchester I was sure awaken by fairly big time claps. Perhaps the final data tomorrow morning will show “thunder”. I have seen sometimes major changes between data recordings. We will see.

Given the severity of the thunder claps, I have a hard time believing that Dorchester and other Boston sections had it and Logan went unscathed.

  23. Thanks, Old Salty, those links are great.

What a spectacular day. I’m looking forward to the pre-season game tonight. My son-in-law took my 4 year old grandson to practice yesterday and it turned out to be in the stadium which was a thrill. I can’t believe football is starting already.

  24. Today is probably going to be a “Top-10” day. Finally the dewpoints in Boston and much of SNE are in the 50’s! 🙂

    1. Agreed Philip ! This may be the best weather day of the summer for me. 80ish, low humidity, light breeze, deep blue sky, a few little cumulus skies here and there.

  25. Vicki,

You are welcome. Happy you liked them. I don’t want to post links that no one
    cares about.

Agree about a spectacular day! I wish the whole summer could be like this.

Let’s hope ALL hurricanes this season, if any, do NOT hit the US.

  26. Have to agree top 10 day today. Sitting at wingersheek beach and it’s a perfect day. only if summer could be like today everyday!!

  27. Excuse the lack of update please. My Mom was in for minor surgery and had to make sure my Dad was all set. Mom is well and coming home today. 🙂

  28. Dallas, TX is 87F, but its dewpoint is 73F. There are lots of cumulus clouds already just to their south and a big complex of storms to their north in Oklahoma. I wonder if the higher humidity, cumulus clouds and potential outflow boundaries coming from the north may stop their 100F streak today………..Speaking of 100F, could we experience intense heat again towards the end of the month ? Things may start to move again at higher latitudes in a week or two allowing the now suppressed heat ridge to expand northward and maybe eastward.

    1. As long as there is an ocean breeze sounds ok to me. Never fun at the beach if the sand is too hot to even step on but it is what it is and vacations are fun period!
