Saturday Forecast

7:44AM

DAYS 1-5 (FEBRUARY 10-14)
A warm front passed by overnight, has become stationary to the north of the region, and will sink back to the south as a cold front through Sunday while a couple waves of low pressure move up along it, resulting in a rainy Saturday night and Sunday. High pressure moves in Monday into early Tuesday with dry weather. A disturbance will bring a risk of some light snow/mix Tuesday night, possibly causing slippery ground for your last minute Mardi Gras celebrations, followed by fair but milder weather for Wednesday, which is also Valentine’s Day for those who have fun with that and Ash Wednesday for those who observe Lent. But no matter what you observe, read on to observe forecast details…
TODAY: Cloudy. Isolated to scattered rain showers. Highs 45-52. Wind S under 10 MPH.
TONIGHT: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Lows 38-45. Wind S under 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain, some possibly heavy. Highs 40-47. Wind variable under 10 MPH.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain ending. Areas of fog. Lows 35-42. Wind variable to W under 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy morning. Partly cloudy afternoon. Highs 40-47. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Increasing clouds. Chance of light snow/mix at night. Lows in the 20s. Highs in the 30s.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Lows from the upper 20s to lower 30s. Highs from the middle 40s to lower 50s.

DAYS 6-10 (FEBRUARY 15-19)
Mild February 15 with late-day rain shower and night time snow shower as strong cold front arrives resulting in a windy/colder February 16. Been watching the period around the Presidents Day Weekend for a possible winter weather event but all current indications are for fair/cold start, milder and unsettled finish but no major storminess.

DAYS 11-15 (FEBRUARY 20-24)
A Southeast US ridge and cold Canada pattern will continue but for now giving more weight to the ridge more dominant with no major sustained cold here and only minor precipitation events.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

Looking over the charts this morning, I couldn’t help but notice the almost total dominance of the SE RIDGE, save for a brief cold interlude. Beginning to look very Spring-Like to me and time is slowly running out. One never knows around here, but as far as I am concerned, Spring can’t come soon enough as I am itching for the
    serenity of fishing again.

    1. Many people will not see the snow that does occur very far in advance. It will be a sudden shift that leads to it.

    1. Thanks! The climb-out has been slow, but continues. πŸ™‚ Cough still has work to do but does it ever lead to a headache, and occasionally a nerve flare-up which I am prone to on the left side. Picture a pain that comes from near your shoulder right up your neck and feels like it wraps around your eye, and really hurts when you cough. Finally starting to ease this morning. But things continue to head in the right direction. πŸ™‚

  2. If the final total snowfall for the season at Logan is going to be 29.2″ I might as well look up where this winter will rank in terms of LEAST snowiest as well as the month of February (2.2″).

Wow! I hate the thought of putting my shovel away before Valentine’s Day. πŸ™

  3. I’m watching an Olympic Women’s hockey game (Korea vs. Switzerland). Alina Muller of Switzerland scored 4 goals on 7 shots in the first and early second period. Since then 2 of her teammates have added goals for a 6-0 lead half way through the game for the Swiss.

I’m watching the Hamiltons play against China in mixed doubles curling on my other screen, this on DVR since it happened a few hours ago. I love these games. πŸ™‚

      1. Yes there is a U.S. men’s hockey team. This year no NHL players will be participating. First game is against Slovenia Wed 7:10 am next game Thurs 1010pm against Slovakia and third game is next Saturday at 7:10am against Russia.

      1. All amateur this time. The NHL did not send players. It was fun when they did but to be honest I think I like this much better.

        1. I was never a fan of using pros. Glad to hear theynhave stopped the practice. Mac and I watched always before pros and until the coverage became only about the United States. I will watch this year and hope that has changed also.

          1. Of course NBC is going to focus on the US athletes just as any country’s coverage is going to focus on theirs, but NBC does a great job at making sure you know a lot about the other athletes and I love that about them.

            1. I wasn’t sure since I hadn’t heard any controversy with NHL players having to miss games with their respective teams like in previous years. With the Bruins doing so well so far, it is just as well.

            2. I like to see equal coverage for those who win from all counties. There was a time we used to. Macs parents were quite vocal….especially his mom….since they were not used to not seeing an overall perspective. BUT it is something new for us so perhaps we got the message with past criticism.

  4. Tk I sure hope Tuesday night won’t be anything to keep me at work as it’s student acceptance night at my sons school & I would hate to miss out .

  5. While on the subject of the Olympics, will the NBA be fielding the men’s basketball team for the summer games? Is that this year as well or 2020?

  6. TK – I hope that you have been keeping in contact with your physician on your current illness. What you described above sounds awful with that cough/headache combo.

    1. I have done what I could. It’s just a matter of letting it run its course and that’s what I’ve done. I am well over the hump now. The cough continues because there is a lot of lung-clearing to do. Just the process itself is tiring and causes some pain on its own. Thankfully the nerve-flare has settled down and I’m in better shape as of late this morning of any day in the last 7.

On a bigger plus, my heart has been very quiet and well-behaved. πŸ™‚ Just a few minor flutter episodes which I always get.

      1. Good news. The hump is a nice place to be on the other side of. And clearing lungs takes a huge toll. I have one good day and the next not so much. Takes a while. Please take good care of you.

  7. Regarding the games in terms of pros vs. amateurs did the U.S. start fielding pros because the Russian hockey teams all those years in the past (including 1980) were pros while other nations amateurs?

    1980 – USA 4, USSR 3 πŸ™‚

  8. Thank you, TK. Take care. I’ve been lucky in recent years not to have had a respiratory illness.

The Dutch women’s skating team swept the 3000 meter – gold, silver, and bronze. Quite an achievement. Although I’m not a fan of speed-skating – it’s rather monotonous, especially the longer races – the skaters are great athletes. Their technique is sublime. I was fortunate to have seen first-hand the 1986 “11 cities tour” in Holland. This is a marathon race of sorts across hundreds of kilometers of canals in the Northern part of the Netherlands. The race evokes scenes depicted in 17th century Dutch art. Apparently, Holland and most of Europe experienced a mini Ice Age during part of the 17th century. Sadly, the “11 cities tour” hasn’t taken place since 1986 due to lack of sufficient ice on the canals. This winter is no exception. In fact, Holland has not had any severe frost. Just temps in the mid to upper 20s at night, and only about 10 of those nights this winter.

  9. Thanks tk. I haven’t broken out a shovel since I said it was the broom sweeping part of winter. Will I break out the shovel again? (I won’t.)

  10. I am having deck sitting withdrawal. Kids got me one of the small ventless fire things for Christmas to use on the deck at night. I was going to use it tonight but think it may be too wet.

        1. Nice. I plan to start even just short walks around the neighborhood. I’m bad at making myself do that so will enlist a grand to push me out the door

  11. Just watching the opening ceremonies. It may be the best I have seen. Moving, timely, with the clear vision of hope to echo Lennons words.

    1. I told someone, though I’ve loved all the ceremonies I’ve seen – and I’ve seen most of them since the early 1970s, I think this one, and Norway 1994 were my 2 favorite.

      1. Norway also has a special place …for many reasons. Was easily one of Macs favorites.

I think the message spoke to me this year as much as the ceremony.

  12. Good morning all! Today’s update will be posted a little late (near the end of the morning). No big changes to report anyway…

    1. No hurry. Enjoy your morning. How are you feeling? How is son and mom?

      Blackstone, how are you today?

Robbery at gunpoint at the Starbucks in the sleepy town of Sutton last night. For small towns not used to this, Sutton and surrounded towns did a great job coordinating to catch them.

  13. Good morning,

    Blah, blah, blah…

0.17 inch of rain yesterday, 0.30 inch so far today.

    Blah, blah, blah

I don’t see much if any snow on the horizon. TK indicated that when it
comes, the models won’t see it until almost there.

Btw 6Z GFS does hold out some hope, but as depicted nice snows up
North for 2/21 with nothing to sloppy mess down here. We shall see.

    1. I am beginning to wonder if the cold air will win out very late in the month into the 1st week of March.

    2. Seems that way. I know the SE ridge has been in play, but I get the idea episodes of an even more amplified SE ridge are in play the next many days, with the plunges of very cold air retrograding into the plains or intermountain west.

  14. So much cold air up in Canada, but that southeast ridge been so dominant. Im hoping that the cold air returns with snow as I want to get back out skiing in good winter conditions. Not the spring conditions. I hate region wide rain. Don’t mind it if its south of Boston, just keep it snow north and Im happy

  15. HI all! Just waiting for a quick reset from my main tech guy after he takes care of his kitty, who is on medication. Even the kitties have extra colds this season!

Once that’s done I can go to my other account and update.

To answer your question Vicki, doing ok but still that cough goes on forever. Hope everyone else ailing is feeling better soon and we can start putting this particular cold/flu season behind us.

  16. Southeast Mass and RI will probably break into the mid-upper 50s this evening as the warm front tries to make a little progress northward. Threat for rain/isolated thunder continues all day into the early overnight. Freezing line continues northward; we’re 37 and climbing here in Plymouth, NH.

  17. Sharp contrast today. Some icing in the valleys of north central MA and southwestern NH now, and may approach 60 in parts of southeastern MA this evening.

    New post!
