Saturday Forecast

10:14AM

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 16-20)
Trying to fine-tune things regarding the heat and any thunderstorm chance timing for Monday and will continue to work on that. Latest thoughts on that are the MCS threat stays mainly in Maine early Monday but that may set up a boundary or pre-frontal trough that could kick of a line of storms pushing from north northwest to south southeast late Monday afternoon to Monday evening. High heat is a certainty, along with humidity, for Monday itself, but still the temperature details will again come down to the amount of cloudiness in the sky during the hours of maximum heating. Before all of this, we have a great weekend, though don’t expect 100% clear sky the entire time. We will see episodic high level cloudiness, the remains of thunderstorms way upstream in southern Canada and the upper Plains and Midwest. Again, as stated before, this is a typical pattern for this time of year. Still thinking that a little humidity and a shower risk hangs on at least part of Tuesday before dry air returns into midweek. Forecast details…
TODAY: Sunshine with intervals of high clouds. Highs 73-79 South Coast, 79-86 elsewhere. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly clear to partly cloudy. Lows 52-58 except 58-65 urban centers. Wind W under 10 MPH.
SUNDAY: Sunshine with a few high clouds at times. Highs 72-78 all coastal areas, 78-85 interior except 85-90 interior valleys. Wind light variable with sea breezes.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Increasingly humid. Lows 58-67. Wind W up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Late-day or evening thunderstorms possible especially southern NH and northern MA progressing southward but probably weakening later evening into night. Humid. Highs 82-90 South Coast, 90-97 elsewhere. Wind W 10-20 MPH. Winds near any storms may be variable, strong, and gusty.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy with possible showers morning. Clearing afternoon. Humid, then drying. Lows from the middle 60s to lower 70s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows from the middle 50s to lower 60s. Highs from the upper 70s to middle 80s.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 21-25)
This looks like a mainly dry period with one interruption possible around June 24 with the potential for some wet weather. Temperatures near to above normal.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 26-30)
A brief shower threat around June 26-27 otherwise more of the same with mainly dry weather and temperatures near to above normal.

  1. Thanks TK!

I heard on the tv news this morning that Lowell Public Schools is considering cancelling school on Monday due to the heat. Announcement will be made to parents via robo-calls.

    1. In this case I don’t think it’s necessary. What is forgotten is if we haven’t had a lot of heat/humidity leading to the one hot day, the buildings are actually not that hot, and the heating would be underway and peaking during the latter part of the school day, so it would be sufficient to release early rather than cancel the entire day.

One day heat spikes when we haven’t been all that hot are much less impactful than longer stretches of heat.

      1. I would be curious if schools in the Deep South ever cancel due to excessive heat or if they are all A/C’d.

        1. Schools and commercial buildings have A/C. That would be like New England buildings not having heat for the winter.
And even most older houses have central A/C. You see some window units, but central air is the norm.
And schools are already out in most of the southern states. They start later in August and are done by Memorial Day.

          1. I never understood that starting early August. Even in the south, August is hotter than June

      2. Agree re early release. Although, maybe Tom and captain can weigh in. Oldest said teachers often bring their own ACs to school in Uxbridge

The hotter and more humid the better for her

        1. I’d love to hear their thoughts. 🙂

I am in an old former school building for several hours 5 days a week and what I do know about that building is they don’t turn on the central air until sometime in mid or late June and if we have any early heat it won’t have an initial impact, but a warm stretch with hotter spikes will have a much larger impact.

          1. It seems to me it would be difficult to heat up a classroom until afternoon. I’m thinking a room full of bodies in addition to heat would make it uncomfortable much after noon. They can be out around noon to have it count as a full day.

However, to me, each school super knows his school as well as the demographics. Whatever he decides works for me

            1. Ha hahahahahaha.

Not very. My kids take one to the beach each year for their bedroom. I just take a fan.

              1. Hahahahahaha. I’m sitting outside reading and checked here. If they ever had a doubt, My neighbors are now certain I’m certifiable. You two have me laughing out loud.

    1. They can cancel after school activities without losing a school day. It’s not a case of all or nothing.

    2. Interesting…does early release mean no after school activities. Although they sure can cancel them anyway. I’d think they would do that at least

      1. no early releases do not mean after school acitivites are cancelled at least when it came to my school. Marching band happened period. If the school closed for some reason we typically as a group decide if it was safe or not and went to the field despite. Its part of the reason why we won 3 years straight.

          1. Belmont always has a very good band when I was in school. I had the pleasure of hearing Sutton high school at the Memorial Day parade and again at the ceremonies that followed. They are excellent. They also played echo taps which I had not heard in a long while and which always gives me goosebumps

  2. Beautiful morning for fishing.

    Stopped at a few places.

Here is the Charles River snug tight to Clay Brook Road in Dover.

Caught plenty of smaller fish, but this was the catch of the day, a really nice
large mouth Bass about 19 inches or so and about 4 pounds. This was caught in Dedham at the Needham line.

Next best catch. Another nice bass, a little smaller than the first one.
    This one is 17 or 18 inches and 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. I didn’t measure as I left
most gear back at the car. This was caught in Newton on the Needham line,
actually under the Kendrick Street bridge. 😀

Because I expected to catch a bunch of smaller fish, I used my very light gear,
a light weight rod, light weight spinning reel and only 6 pound test line.
Those 2 bass and most especially the 1st one were a challenge on that gear.
I have another medium weight rig with 10 pound line that I generally
    use for Bass.

Because I was trying to avoid ticks, there were several spots that I purposely
didn’t even try. NO TICKS!!! Yeah!!!

And did I say the weather was/is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks TK for ordering it up.

        1. Nice. We usually caught and reeleased. With rare exception ted Williams did also. Although I’d usually take a few rainbow trout home. My mom cooked exceptional trout.

You didn’t mention the weather. What a perfect day you had. 😉 😉 😉

          1. Ought OH. Please tell me the GFS is WRONG.
It shows a 6-7 day HEAT WAVE starting A WEEK from today.

  3. Really? No school?
Think about “legit” no school days. Dangerous driving…no power…blocked streets, etc.

I think that if we provide the kids with plenty of water, shade, quiet time, we all should be fine. On days like Monday, the principal turns the AC on in the auditorium and classes are allowed to come down and sit and work. I still have a project and a final exam due this week with my students.

No school because it’s hot? I am definitely not in that camp.

    1. Hahaha. My daughter said the same. The last few weeks are productive for your classes I see. The younger grades are enjoying more fun than work I think

  4. Oh, by the way, museum-quality photo, TK!
And I am so glad your fishing adventures this morning were so successful, JPD.
These are the days I dream of shovelling out the driveway!

  5. Nice pics JPDave.
12z NAM just like yesterday aggressive with the severe parameters for Monday. 12z GFS not impressive for Monday.

  6. This was misplaced…

Ought OH. Please tell me the GFS is WRONG.
It shows a 6-7 day HEAT WAVE starting A WEEK from today.

  7. Monday temperature projections are ticking downwards. Not sure it’s a cloud issue also. I think it’s more to do with the strength of the WSW flow, and a trend for closer to SW than WSW. This should keep the South Coast quite cool relative to the rest of the region, and should cap places south of the Pike to mid 90s (94-95) at best, cooler the further south you go. Best chance for any upper 90s looks to be northern MA/southern NH. And that’s assuming no cloud issues. It’ll be a hot day, but it looks like some of the 100+ projections from recent days were… overcooked 😉

However, as JPDave alluded to with the GFS, it looks like we are settling in to an extended stretch of generally above normal temperatures. Summer switch firmly in the “on” position.

    1. WxWatcher, I was noticing surface winds now looking to be more straight
SW and at this time of year, I totally agree that highs will be capped and won’t make it to 100 and not even upper 90s in Boston.

Record in Boston is 94. If it’s going to be hot, at least break the record.

      We shall see.

      1. Since Logan’s thermometer continues to run 1 to 2 degrees above what it really is due to bad calibration, they should unofficially officially break the record. 😉

        1. FTR the same 4 stations continue to do very bizarre or steadily off things, BOS, LWM, BVY, GHG (Marshfield)

        1. I thought so also. I wished I’d thought to take pictures of my son and son in law sitting up there to screw it is

And as we all agonized over where to put it, my 9 year old weather geek granddaughter said…”why not the swing set”

    1. Yes, but that photo is the Cap Cod Canal and Mass Maritime is in Bourne.
Unless I have lost my marbles, You said SIL was in Boston.
DID I?, I bet I did, Read Bourne as Boston? OH Boy and we thought you were confused. Sorry about that. wow!

      1. Hahaha. He told me Boston. How silly

Nope. You didn’t read it incorrectly. He owns it 🙂

        1. Btw. Rule of thumb. If you are trying to decide if you do I are confused….always go with me 🙂

    1. Love it! Is she on FB? My friend’s photo page members would love to see her photos!

  8. TK. I’ll send you her name on FB. She said to have your friend send her a friend request. Also maybe have her friend April Eaton brown. She is my very favorite photographer in this area

  9. The gfs is showing temperatures in the 90s, With several areas seeing highs near 100 degrees in Eastern Canada. 25+ degrees above normal for most of these areas. People will say oh its just one event, but look, these events are increasing in occurrence.
