  1. Thank you TK. Enjoy the day. I know it is bittersweet but then maybe your dad had a lot to do with your being able to copy the blog and give you a special day for you

  2. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads here. I hope your day is perfect. Hugs to all whose dads are in heaven. I hope your day is full of wonderful memories.

  3. Happy Father’s Day to the dads out there.

In the western Great Lakes and plains last night, temps in the big cities had a low right around 80F, while the rest of the region had lows in the mid-upper 70s. Accompanying this were dewpoints of 70F to 75F.

  4. Old salty. May I ask a couple of questions. PLEASE answer as time permits. There is absolutely no hurry.

I seem to recall the weather system will adjust temp for sun. Mine will have sun all day. It is impossible for it not to here unless I put it up against the house. Which wouldn’t work.

Also the unit seems to turn. My son thought it should be stationary and facing south (I think he said south but may be wrong). He could not figure how to secure it on the mount to keep it from turning.

Thank you and again…it is a special day for you and I won’t do any more with the station today so no hurry.

    1. God morning,

Happy to answer question based on my experience.

      1. I presume yours is an AcuRite unit? If so, it has a built in fan to ensure
accurate temperature readings even in sunshine. The reason mine reads higher
in bright sunshine without a ton of wind is because it is mounted on a deck post and the flooring is atop of an asphalt roof. So even with fan, it is recording
actual heat, Outside in the open it should be fine.

      2. The unit should not move. The only thing moving should be the wind vane.
Mine does not budge, even in the strongest of winds. I suggest carefully going over the install instructions. It sounds like a step was missed or misfollowed.
If I recall, I almost made securing it to the deck post. It’s been 2 years, but
IF I remember correctly, the unit pops off the base and then the base should be secured and then the unit pops back on. I am a little fuzzy on this, but I remember something. Perhaps that is where you went wrong.

      Hope this helps.

      1. Thank you OS. It is an AccuRight. You helped me with selection 🙂 but a year ago. I’ll see if one of the guys can climb back onto the swing set and resecure it. They’ll be here next weekend for another party. Downside of it being mounted where it is….I cannot get to it. But I still have wind speed if not direction. I’ve always wanted an anemometer and am very impressed at how sensitive this unit is…even to very slight breezes

  5. Interesting discrepancies across models for high temperatures tomorrow.

Euro still near 100, GFS 95, regular NAM, low 90s, 3KM NAM upper 80s.

        1. According to Dave Epstein, a WSW wind brings the most heat to Boston. I had no idea it was that trivial.

          1. WSW can bring more heat than SW, but W and WNW are better under the right circumstances.

SW winds have a marine component from the waters South of Long Island, NY. True, modified
greatly by the time it reaches here, but yet
still enough to knock a few or more degrees
off the temperature. Tomorrow, could make the difference between 97-100 vs 88-93. We shall
            see how it plays out.

  6. I heard again on the tv news this morning that Lowell Public Schools will make a final decision on cancellation for tomorrow via robo-calls to parents later this evening.

I may have heard wrong but I now have the impression that it is actually the parents putting the pressure on school officials to close due to the heat expected. It will be interesting if Lowell does close, will other districts do the same.

  7. As of 10AM, Logan still holding onto a land breeze, West at 6MPH.
That is not likely to hold and sea breeze should commence within an hour or 2 tops.

    1. as of 10:15 Logan has a light SE sea breeze and temp has dropped to 79. No Sea Breeze here in JP, yet anyway. I do expect one later, but it will limit our temps
to mid 80s instead of 90, but not the 70s Logan will see all PM.

  8. So far on this Father’s Day I did the usual Sunday AM stuff with my mother but that included visiting 2 cemeteries and all relatives that were (and in many ways still are) dads, including my own father. I’ll make a FB post about that later.

    Wonderful weather.

Also, music is also a big part of most of my days so today I’m doing a mixture of stuff, celebrating some bdays in music with Barry Manilow & Eric Stefani (who was in No Doubt through “Tragic Kingdom”). Big fan of both. Also on the play list today, Spyro Gyra, Wham!, George Michael, John Mayer, Jellyfish, Thomas Dolby, Bruce Hornsby, Don Harriss, Zero7, and The Sundays. 🙂

I’ll probably start writing Monday’s blog tonight to go into some depth about the storm potential, or maybe lack thereof? I’m not convinced yet. I’m concerned, but not convinced, that parts of the region see a few big boomers. There are factors both for and against and we will need to see how it will all come out after the mixing bowl turns off.

    1. NWS discussion regarding tomorrow night

      Monday night…

Anomalous moist airmass across southern New England with PWATs
greater than 2 inches. These values are +3 standard deviations above
climo! Given surface dew pts are around 70 deg, this results in 500-
1000j/kg of MUcape overnight. Thus ample moisture and instability
for convection. 850-500 mb Qvector convergence suggest modest
synoptic scale forcing associated with approaching short wave. All
of these attributes supports scattered showers and T-storms with
heavy downpours possible. However with poor mid level lapse rates
unable to support strong/vigorous updrafts, severe weather is
unlikely. However sufficient instability to enhance updrafts and
coupled with anomalous deep layer moisture, main concern with any
storms will be risk for locally heavy rainfall.

  9. Thanks, TK. Happy Father’s Day to you and all the dads out there! It is a beautiful day. We will be going out in a bit to enjoy it. May stop at DQ. Usually get an Oreo blizzard but might try a sundae for a change. Our kitty says she might treat her daddy and me to a pizza tonight. 🙂

    1. We hit DQ last night.

I get a blizzard that is not even listed as available.
It’s a Caramel & Marshmallow Blizzard and it is out of this world!!!
I dare anyone to try it.

  10. Quick look at latest SREF model still highlighting Worcester area west for possible tornado potential and now parts of northern CT are in that area.

    1. If this doesn’t illustrate both the fluidity of the atmosphere and the local nature of some weather then nothing ever will. 🙂

    1. Glad also and agree. They not only put others at risk but they put those who need to rescue them at risk.

      1. Precisely, Vicki. When I worked atop Mt. Washington I got to know some of the rescue team. They’re dedicated and underpaid people. They’re also frustrated about unnecessary rescue operations.

    2. Climbed Mt. Washington twice. GUILTY as charged. We climbed it with ZERO GEAR other than some water and that was it. Never once even thought about it.
I guess when you’re 19 or 20 years old, you just don’t think. Fortunately, we required no rescue.

        1. I am not disagreeing with you. Just trying to explain, that sometimes people just don’t think. It doesn’t make them bad people.

Thinking back, we EASILY could have gotten in trouble, most especially the last time we climbed when the top 2,000 feet of the mountain was enveloped in fog (clouds). We couldn’t see 20 feet in front of us. How we made it to the summit amazes me to this day.

          1. Not totally certain but I believe that New Hampshire is a state that does fine or charge those who have to be rescued, no matter how prepared you and your party may be on your excursion. Or is it on a case-by-case basis?

  11. Impressive sea breeze today- near 20 degree difference between the coast and a few miles inland.

Looking at potential storms tomorrow… I very much agree with the SPC outlook right now. I think everyone runs the risk at a storm, but the further north and west you go, the better the chance for the storms to be a little more feisty, with a couple possibly turning severe. Little more moisture and better forcing to the north. Wind fields are nothing special, and the poor mid-level lapse rates are an important limiting factor (no remnant EML this go around!) Really we’re just working with a very hot and fairly humid air mass and modest non-diurnal forcing. I think the 12z runs of the RGEM and 3km NAM are pretty reasonable with how they depict the convection. Biggest threats will likely be locally heavy rain (could see areas of training t-storms especially west), brief strong winds, and frequent lightning.

      1. Locally, perhaps, if you get under a good storm. But it’ll be classic “hit or miss” activity, and a 20-30 minute downpour only does so much good; there’ll be plenty of runoff after the way we’ve dried out the past couple days. Anything helps though, especially given no signs of any appreciable rain beyond tomorrow for the next 7 days at least.

    1. Now there is an older but goodie. Paul Petersen from the Donna Reed Show which aired from 1958 to 1966.

      1. I loved the show. Had a crush on Jeff as did most girls. I have a couple of the season DVDs but there was some problem getting permission to release them.

        Happy Father’s Day Old Salty

  12. Sea breeze is finally impacting my area. Temp down to 83.
Only 70 at Logan, while it is 91 at Norwood.

  13. NH, is on a case by case basis, I know because a friend of mine was rescued on a trip he took up in the Whites. He fell and twisted his ankle, Not his fault when the trail went from under him.

I hiked alot of MTNs up in the Whites, Required stuff on many trips when i went. one person if they know how to hike if not 2 or more other people. 3 tarps, String, Water purifier, Bungies. pot and pan. gotta have a game or two. Cards.Fire starter, flares, sleeping bag, Noaa weather radio, my pocket knife and a few other knifes. Sunscreen, bug spray. Long pants, shorts, rain gear, hiking boots, water shoes. compus, map of the area trailmix with dried cranberries and cronola. First aid kit. One of thing of juice. Also swimsuit, never know when you will hit a nice water hole. :P. My girlfriend at the time and myself got stuck up in the whites north of where those hikers got caught. It was towards the middle of september, it got foggy, and much cooler, luckily we had our jackets and sweat pants type of stuff. It took us 4 days to do what should of been 2. as there was a very cold rain on one of the days and the following day it was so muddy and very wet, so we just hung out in the middle of the MTN, We were surprised that we got cell phone connection lol. Most people do not prepare as well as we did lol. Despite all the preparation you do, you can still end up in trouble Luckily I was a boy scout and she was an adventure scout, so we knew what to do, Many people do not. Also my dad made sure we had everything lol, PS, the rain was not predicted to occur during that time, it was suppose to happen the wednesday after we got back.

    1. Thanks Matt! Too bad you two broke up. It appeared you two had a lot in common…in terms of proper preparation for trips if nothing else. 🙂

      1. it wasn’t because we wanted to, it was because her family moved to Oregon. Had alot of common interests, skiing, loves the ocean loves the mountains. Always seemed to happen that the girls families decided to move to a far location lol. Never really broken up because of disagreements or bad things happening. Besides for one. Disagreements always seemed to work their self out. I am still in touch with many of them. Strange but true lol.

    2. Great read Matt. My son did the app trail south for a few weeks after college graduation and before finding a job. He did it on his own. I was a bit nervous about the idea of his being alone but he had been hiking and camping for years. And he did tremendous research to prepare. The only problem was the boots LL Bean fit him with and that he broke in before caused nasty blisters on one foot. He let us know. I contacted LL Bean who still had his information. They arranged for replacement footwear that would not irritate the blisters to be waiting at his next trail House (I forget the actual, term) and they never charged.

      1. LL. Bean is amazing. hiking that trail requires at least a buddy if not more. you never know.

  14. Just went outside for a minute before traveling to Hopkinton.

STIFF ENE TO NE breeze blowing here. Still comfortably warm at 83, but the
coolness from the ocean can be felt. I suspect we’ll drop into the 70s fairly soon.

    1. Have a fun time in Hopkinton

Temp dropped two degrees to 87 here. The system must be fine in the sun as I am now a degree below nearest wunder station. Breeze is light …between 3 and 8. And the direction seems ok too which is odd.

I’m planning to get on the phone with Acu Rite tomorrow to set everything up to my computer and figure how to set a wunder station.

    1. i rather that while I work outside than the 90s and humidity. The only times I like the 90s are when I am at the beach or not needing to work.

      1. its 86 here in Billerica luckily the humidity is at 30% so not that bad. Tomorrow is gonna be bad.

    2. I just checked the Humarock wunder station and it is 72 there. My oldest and family are heading to Rockport area for a beach picnic dinner. Hope they brought light Jackets. Mac and I did that with the kids often in summer. The tradition continues 🙂

      1. We are here at the end of Hull. The sun is blazing, but the sea breeze feels wonderful !!!!!!

        1. Nice Tom. I have to say this is one of my favorite kinds of beach days. Although, I think I say that quite often

          Enjoy your special day.

        1. Relax JPD. Here in Dorchester no coat necessary in spite of the stiff east wind. All is still good! 😀

It is no longer April or May. 😉

  15. I love it when the NWS uses the term “warmer” for a day in the mid 90s: “Monday
Mostly sunny. Warmer. More humid with highs in the mid 90s. Southwest winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.”

Ok I lied. I don’t love it at all. I hate it. 😛

    1. I like Old Saltys description way better. I crack up every time I see that “stinker”.

    2. Back in the day, the NWS used the term “hot” when temps reached 90+. Times have certainly changed…for the WORST! And THAT goes for society in general.

    1. WHW did forecast sea breezes today. 🙂 This definitely would result in cooling beyond the earlier high temps.

  16. I just purchased a ski home at the base of Attitash / Bear Peak. It’s steps to the lifts and 30 minutes away from 5 ski resorts. North Conway and Story land only minutes away.
Discounts offered for July and August to any Woodshill Weather Fans.

        1. I practically grew up there.

We do have a red fox and coyote in residence and turkey babies here, but know I’d love the fishing in the Ellis just above Jackson.

But I have Humarock booked. Sorry

  17. Today the June sea breeze made temperatures change from neighborhood to neighborhood in Boston. I was out and about and within a mile radius of my apartment felt noticeable changes in temperature, almost like the Bay Area. I’d say that Kneeland Street felt at least 5 degrees cooler than the Public Garden.

A meteor streaked across the Dutch skies tonight as the Foo Fighters were performing at a rock festival. This article is in Dutch, but if you click on the 20 second video you’ll see the meteor. Then below you’ll see a photograph of the streaking meteor. the photo was taken by a German scientist. Notice, the moon in the left hand side of the picture. The video below that is of a meteor that damaged someone’s shed in Holland n September of last year. A passenger in a car took a video of the meteor from the highway.

  18. Just read Lowell Public schools closed tomorrow due to heat. First time I ever heard school called off due to heat. I have heard of school dismissing early due to heat.

    1. I heard parents were putting on pressure. I think Philip did too. I would not want to be a super.

      1. And please know that what I heard may be 100% rumor. Either way. I still would not want to be a super

  19. As the temp drops the humidity goes up. I have not figured how to set DP on new system al her humidity. Was in 80s with 30%ish humidity all day. Now 72 and 61 DP.

  20. I always looks at the overnight lows to see what kind of day were going to have humidity wise. Lows in the 50s dry air mass in place. Lows in the lows 60s tolerable mid 60s humid upper 60s very humid and lows 70 or higher oppressive.

  21. 68 with dp 54 here.
All windows wide open. At least the house will be cool to start tomorrow.
    We’ll see how it goes.
