  1. May 29, 2021 is going to be an historical day in Boston sports, especially for the Red Sox! 😀

  2. Vicki, thanks for sharing the information on sharing of vaccines at the Canadian border.

  3. Oddly, I’m reading from DESE that they had no advance warning of Bakers plan to lift mask mandate. I may not always agree with Baker but have always thought he had a working strategic plan in place. I’d think that notifying schools would be a key part of the necessary steps before implementing lifting the mask mandate

    1. My hope is that all school districts mandate vaccinations for all students for the upcoming fall. I know that Needham already has. Boston has yet to make a decision. If nothing else, it may also encourage non-vaccinated parents to get a shot at the same time, getting us one more step closer to herd immunity.

      1. I don’t believe needham has but did say they will once vaccine received full approval me to hear state guidance.. I said the other day that they best continue full remote if they plan to mandate. It doesn’t give parents a lot of time to see how the vaccine works in kids…especially the very young children.

Several pressers ago, Baker did say he won’t require for state workers. I do not know if he has changed his stance in that. Do you?

        1. As far as I know, Baker has not. I get the impression that he’s not into mandating vaccinations for anyone, let alone state workers.

  4. Thanks Joshua. Now then, what happens once the state of emergency is lifted? Can we all go back to 2019 conditions?

    1. More or less. But I’m not an expert on what a state of emergency entails. I only know what a “snow emergency” means, and that is that I can’t park on Beacon Street! But that’s clearly not relevant.

    1. In no way did I mean to suggest that Chinese products in general are inferior. I reread my post and realize that it could be interpreted this way. I apologize if I offended anyone. I said “It’s Chinese. This suggests …” I meant to simply say the Chinese vaccine is apparently not working very well.

      1. It is nice of you to verify; but, Joshua, we know you well enough to understand you have no prejudice. I think most folks who live in many different areas of the world just see all as one. If that makes sense.

  5. Evidently the U.S. is on the so-called “amber list,” one of several dozen countries which Brits are advised not to travel to. There’s a separate red list of several dozen countries that are essentially banned from travel altogether. Then there are the green list countries which are places Brit may visit. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-57158372?

  6. Because America is now on the amber list it really complicates visits to the UK.

I think Amy or somebody else on WHW is traveling to the UK soon. It’s important to know the following (note, I do NOT know for sure whether these rules also apply to fully vaccinated folks; but apparently it does, which I find odd). I’ve put comments next to the various bullet points:

For countries listed as “amber,” before you travel to the UK you must:

Complete a passenger locator form – okay; understood
    Take a COVID-19 test – okay; understood
Book and pay for Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 travel tests – why??? this apparently also applies to fully vaccinated people!!

Noticed this note on the UK government site:
Vaccine passport scheme will not launch until mid June, so for the moment even fully vaccinated people will still need to comply with testing rules.

[Of course, the US has no vaccine passport, so how will the UK treat US citizens?]

Then, on arrival in England you must:

Quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days – again, why?? if you’re vaccinated AND submitted a Covid test prior to entry that should be sufficient
Take a COVID-19 test on or before Day 2 and on or after Day 8 – see comments above

This pretty much kills the idea once again of me visiting my daughter. She and her boyfriend don’t even have space for me to stay in their apartment for longer than a day or two. And obviously I can’t stay in a hotel, because I can’t see my daughter when quarantining. What’s the point then of traveling at all? Depressing.

    1. I’m sorry to hear this, Joshua.

We are still hoping that it might become possible for us to travel to South Africa in October, but we’re not counting on it. Meanwhile I’m incredibly grateful for WhatsApp!

      1. I don’t recall and knowing me may well have forgotten that you plan to travel to South Africa. I have a painting over my couch of a beach in South Africa from the time Mac and family lived there.

I will keep your trip and Joshua’s in my prayers.

        1. Adding that I am keeping my NYC friend in my prayers. She hopes to visit family in Sweden this summer. Her parents and Mac’s became life long friends when Macs family lived in Sweden in the early 1950s. She lost both parents during during all of this …not to covid….but wants to get home to visit her sisters.

Althiugh I understand why as covid losses overshadow all, there is So much heartache that goes unnoticed.

        2. Thank you, Vicki.
We haven’t been over since 2017 and haven’t seen that part of the family since they were here in 2019. We sure miss them!

          1. I truly cannot imagine but have tears as I type. Hugs and hope that you WILL be with your family this fall
