C-19 Chat Post – October 31 through November 6 2022

This is the new version of the separate post for discussing the Covid 19 pandemic and related issues. For now, probably until it’s no longer needed (declared end of pandemic or shortly after), I will set up one of these per week to cover the Monday through Sunday time period. Previously, comments on any blog post would automatically close after 3 days. I have adjusted the settings on WordPress to keep them open through 7 days, so you will be able to come back to this post through the week to add comments. Just a reminder to keep your conversations civil even if a strong difference of opinion exists. We can all agree to disagree while still expressing our views. While I don’t allow political discussion on the weather page, I realize a little bit of politics can easily enter the Covid discussion. Just remember to keep that civil as well. Let me know if you have any questions about this new format for the Covid post. I’ll try to check in at least once a day.

    1. I still believe that masks should be optional. When my bus or subway car gets real crowded, I do put my mask on. Once we get deeper into the holiday season, I’ll probably start putting a mask on again in the stores.

My take is, it’s all about ventilation. Once late fall and winter set in, there will be less and less of it.

  1. My youngest son is a junior at UMass Lowell. He’s very good at making connections with people. His discussions with professors and administrators paint a grim overall picture of the effects of the pandemic on students now starting college.

The school is slashing the number of freshmen calculus and physics classes and adding two levels of pre-calculus and a pre-physics. The same may be needed for chemistry. These remedial classes teach the material that the incoming students should have learned in the classes that they “passed” in high-school. My son’s roommate is a very sad and extreme example of these problems.

    1. I took pre-calculus many years ago at MBCC. I never heard of “pre-physics”. Physics in high school was just “physics”.

      1. It is a sad situation. I am sure that there are many different causes. Certainly, not all students were affected so negatively.

I tried to post something here and nothing happened. If I try again, I get a message saying that I already posted it.

  3. TK,
Tomorrow this post will no longer appear under Recent Posts. Of course, it will still be available under Archives. But for ease of use, is it possible to expand the Recent Posts list to cover the week during which a Covid-19 post is now active?

    1. Good idea. I thought maybe a tab at top but then it would get really long. Unless maybe newest comments are on top. But I think your suggestion may be easier, SClarke

  4. Just got my COVID booster (right arm) and flu shot (left arm).

    Equal opportunity arm sticks! 😀
