  1. At least it looks like late April early May, my wife is happy about this that all the trees r budded, it looks much nicer than everything bare 🙂

    1. I’m afraid after about friday, it won’t look much like late April. This freezing weather will set everything back at least 3 weeks, maybe more. A lot of perennials that are out at this point will get burned badly. In fact, things like hydrangeas may not bloom much at all. Hard to say, really. If it only got down to 30 or so, not much of an issue. But at 23 degrees, that’s a tremendously hard freeze for all vegetation that’s out. At the very least, fewer early blooming plants will actually bloom.

    1. At the baseball field watching 15 yr olds play there 1st game of season, actually not to bad out 49 degrees with mostly cloudy sky’s, enjoy everyone 🙂 I’ll b honest I’m a snow lover but I’m glad winter is in the past. Enjoy!!

    2. :(. Ah, New England and the atmosphere in general. Now…..here comes the neutral to slightly negative NAO…in late March and early April.

      1. Exactly what we had all feared Tom. I wonder how long it will stick around. All those times during the winter when the NAO was forecast to go negative and never did…looks like this time it’s for real. On the bright side, at least a better setup for widespread rain?

        1. Maybe so…..although if the trof is not set up correctly, then it will be cool and dry as opposed to cool and damp and I think, at least for now, it looks more like cool and dry.

  2. The latest radar has good snows for northern Maine, so it appears they will get a nice replenishing of snow for a few days. Why is it that the IWS model always verifies for the state of Maine but not never anywhere else in New England? 😉

I also did hear that a few ski areas in NNE will reopen again for awhile longer due to good snowmaking conditions early this week.

    1. I noticed on radar loops the snow falling in Northern Maine. Northeast corner of Maine – towns like Presque Isle, Van Buren, Fort Kent, have actually fared well this year in terms of snowfall. I believe snowfall there has been in the normal range, while temperatures have only been slightly above normal. That may be the only place in the lower 48 where this winter turned out pretty much normal.

  3. A shock to the system walking out this morning with all the summer like warmth last week. I don’t see any summer temps for a while.

    1. That is fine by me Jimmy! I am just glad that I didn’t put my winter coat away to the dry cleaners. I will probably wait until mid-April or around tax time. 🙂

      1. I put my jacket away 2 weeks ago, I get hot easy, we’ve officially r onto short sleeve and shorts, like I said I get hot easy :$

        1. I’ll step right over to Charlies line on the hot easy – I literally do not wear a coat in winter unless I’m out playing in the snow – ever – no matter how cold. I wore mine once this year and that was for a walk on the beach on that extra cold day we had in January. Mine is washed and away and won’t come out.

  4. There was a very nice long term weather discussion back-and-forth between David White and Bob over on Joe’s blog from yesterday. It was quite refreshing to see something like that over there for a change. It was especially good that no trolls interfered with it. 🙂

    David White/Bob:

If you should read this, please do not hesitate to post your thoughts over here. We would be more than happy for you to join us discussing weather. You two seem to have good weather knowledge worth sharing! 🙂

  5. Charlie I can’t buy that your a snow lover:) but I do agree that I am ready for nice weather.

In Orlando and had a cold front move through last night so temps are low 80’s but dew points in the low 50’s!! About as perfect as it can be.

    1. It probably depends on a person’s definition. To me a snow lover is a person who wants snow no matter what and no matter when. I’d take snow in the middle of the summer………….I’d actually get a huge kick out of it 🙂 But I love weather no matter what it is and this really isn’t weather. It’s just early warmth.

      1. Vicki, I am a snow lover, but only up to a point. My timeframe is late November until early/mid-April. After that, I am more than ready for spring & summer temps.

You would have loved the summer of 1816. I believe most areas had snow at some point in the season. 🙂

  6. At the taste of pembroke. For$5.00 you get to sample all of the food from pembroke resturants. Such a nice family town. Cloudy day here and chilly, no rain though.

    1. sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

John when we retire I would love a place overlooking the water – any water – however ocean is preferable. Not on the ocean – too risky but there are places where you are set up and see the ocean. Anything like that around Pembroke? Even a lake? I just love the sound of the town and as you know I am a huge fan of the area!

      1. Funny- growing up in marshfield the next town over, we never voyaged to deep into pembroke. You know pass through, a party here and there and some things not for here. We were animal house. But we are so happy here.

  7. I really dont think we see a long term pattern change. What we see right now is normal for this time of year. Also, the NAO and AO, while trending neutral to slight negative doesnt mean too much in the long term, IMO. To see a real regime/pattern change, those indices need to show a good, solid 8-10 days in a neutral to negative phase (<0.0) to actually be called a pattern change and lock us into this a longer term. And, model skill has been terrible for months, why should it change now. Both NAO and AO show neutral or slight positive out past the middle of April. Slight dips are to be expected, but long term i still dont see a change in the drier pattern, and dont see a big long trmr cool down. Remember folks, the weather predicted for the next 10-14 days in normal for this time of year.

  8. I wear my winter coat throughout an entire winter except those days that are extremely warm like we have seen. Having said that, I do hold off as long as possible before I finally get it out. I usually give in around the first week or so of December, but this particular winter I don’t believe I brought it out until nearly Christmas time.

    1. the heat is turned off on the back side of our house and will not go on again. Itll stay on a bit longer on the front side since that’s where grandsons bedroom is. Otherwise it’d be off for the year too. My husband will tell you it may not be snowing outside but it could snow in our room if we threw water into the air

      1. I had to turn the heat back on last night. I believe it or not was the one saying that It was cold. It stinks that we had summer weather come through, and now back to normal. I would have loved for it to stay. Summer is my favorite time of year.

          1. Wow that surprises me since you come down here every summer, and seem to love the water.
I hate winter and everything that comes with it. I am all summer. How is the baby.

            1. I like heat to John. Summer is my season too. We have such a short summer season here I relish every minute!

              1. I grew up on the beach and had great summers as a kid. I just love everything about it. I am a shorts and t-shirt kind of guy. It has alway’s been my time of year.

          2. I was always a mountain and lake person. My mom was the beach person so we went to hum every summer. My dad was the outdoorsman and skier so we fished and skied and hiked and swam in the lakes the rest of the year. The reason we rent the house we do is because it has water on both sides and nearly always a cooling breeze from the Water. And we rent in late August. Less chance for extreme heat. I’d rent winter before summer but I’m outvoted. Baby is great John. Thanks for asking. Several here have colds so we have not seen her – don’t want to take the chance

            1. No you don’t. I suspect more to be sick this week with the big temp drop. It’s not like last week was warm, It was summer weather. Enjoy that baby. My one and only turns eight soon, how fast it goes.

                1. I remember last year. You went to cape codder. I think coatals little girls bday is around then but that date I don’t know.

  9. What a difference this week compared to last week.
How is everyone doing with their brackets??? I got three of the four final teams correct.

    1. Yes I hate It. But the good news is we turn the corner fast. I do not follow basketball, never did. Am I odd. I like football, hockey and baseball. I don’t get into college football. But somtimes like to watch a good BC game.

  10. What’s the average April snowfall? If I’m not mistaken in Boston it’s a half inch of snow, is the right?

  11. According to Barry’s blog, March 2012 is the warmest ever on record.

    1. 2012
    2. 1946
    3. 1945

1945 and 1946 summers were cooler than average.

    1. Best news today. Someone told me that a warm winter means drier summer and then above avg snowfall the following winter. Any truth to that?

      1. Probably TK would know for sure, but from what I can tell, snowfall for the following winter is all over the place. It can go either way.

          1. My “early” gut tells me that we still get below average snowfall, but much more compared to this record warm winter.

        1. Odd though that historically when there was snow in October an uneventful winter followed. I remember asking why one would have to do with the other but do not remember if the question was answered or if so what it was. Seems the theory once again held true.
