Monday Evening Update

7:25PM

A frontal system will continue to oscillate back and forth over New England during the next couple days. This setup makes for a tricky forecast since there is a very warm air mass just south of the front, and it is much cooler to the north of it. And we also can’t forget the chilly ocean sitting next to us. Instead of launching into why I think the Boston area will be stuck in the cooler air Tuesday and finally bust into the warmer air Wednesday, and then why I think some areas may reach 80 Thursday because a final cold front from the west will be delayed in arriving (until that night sometime), let’s just go ahead and look at the details of what I expect for Metro Boston (and areas not too far away) for the next several days, including a peek at the coming weekend. My apologies for the run-on sentence. 🙂

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy along and south of the Mass Pike early, mostly cloudy to the north. Generally cloudy all areas later at night. Showers and thunderstorms traveling west to east across southern NH and extreme northern MA later at night (most should stay out of the city of Boston though there is a risk of a few brief showers there). Areas of fog, some locally dense. Low 45 to 55, coolest over eastern NH, mildest in the southwest suburbs of Boston. Wind variable up to 10 mph.

TUESDAY: Areas of fog, some dense, mainly before 8:00AM, otherwise cloudy. Isolated showers possible. Chance of drizzle in coastal areas from Boston northward. High 50 to 60, coolest along coastal areas north of Boston, mildest in Boston’s southwestern suburbs. Wind NE 5 to 15 mph.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 45 to 55 from northeast to southwest across the region. Wind variable up to 10 mph becoming S to SW 10 to 15 mph toward dawn.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers possible. High 65 to 70. Wind S 10 to 20 mph.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Low 50 to 55. Wind SSW 10 to 20 mph.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. High 75 to 80. Wind SW 15 to 25 mph. Showers/thunderstorms at night.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 51. High 64.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 44. High 61.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 42. High 63.

  1. It’s so pretty out there will everything blossoming and green, I’ll be in Hyannis for vacation for a week next weekend, expecting 60’s for highs 🙂

  2. TK, thanks for the update! You were “right on” with your forecast last night re: storms. I was up around 1:30 a.m. and saw the radar. There was a lot of rain out in East. NY and it looked like it would head towards the Boston area. But it all stayed mostly to the west and north – just some showers around – maybe some heavier stuff along the NH border.

I hope everyone enjoyed the wknd. It’s a grey and dismal day today and birds are singing like crazy – makes one think of typical English weather. But I think it’s sunny in London today, after seeing the WBZ report from England.

  3. Good Morning everyone! While our weather is calm other parts of the country the weather is anything but between torandoes and flooding. Lets keep a good thought for those folks. For us will watch that cold front makes its approach on Thursday. The CPC has most of SNE in the general risk category for thunderstorms and I was thinking that yesterday. I am going with a 1 on the 1-4 thunderstorm index meaning thunderstorms should they form will be MINOR. I am thinking the severe weather threat Thursday is going to be Mid Altantic states south but as always things could change so stay tuned!

  4. The sun has broken through on the south shore, though I notice that Marshfield has an ENE light breeze which will probably hold temps in check. It looks summery outside….has that hazy look to the sky.

  5. Can we say summer!! On the deck by the pool enjoying this 76 degree weather, pool water is up to 58 degrees, I think the pool water is the warmest it’s been for April since it was built in 04, usually it’s around 54-55 degrees at this time and usually the water is it’s warmest around the end of Aug when it’s around 73-74 degrees, it’s not even May yet 🙂

    1. My 2 neighbors r opening there pool this weekend, I even saw in today’s paper that the town pool instead of opening so late in June, they will be opening the pool Sat Memorial day weekend now, 1st year to do this, there r way to many nice warm days in late April and on to have a pool closed, have a great day, and go swimming 🙂

  6. I sure may have hit the storms overnight, but I sure missed the sky cover this afternoon! Enjoy the bonus sunshine if you can!

      1. Charlie, I’ve made more than my share over the years..trust me. But I accept this. Every day is a new forecasting challenge! I just try to hit more than I miss. 🙂

  7. Speaking of storms the severe weather looks to be staying west of us with thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning in upstate NY. It looks like that activity will remain to the west of SNE today. Our day for any thunderstorm activity will be Thursday and I am thinking right now the activity will be on the MINOR side when the cold front gets here but of course that could change and will keeping an eye on that situation..

  8. No tstorms tonight, but even thu there not a high chance of severe weather here inside 495, I’m thinking some garden variety tstorms for this area, south and west sure, but I or u don’t live there, hope everyone has a great day 🙂

  9. It has been quite chilly in Boston most of the day. Temps have fallen into the upper 40’s. It was actually milder this morning then felt colder when the sun briefly came out earlier this afternoon, but it has been mostly cloudy and foggy ever since.

Any chance for Boston’s famous “six o’clock” jump?

    1. It’s been beautiful here since 10am, the water always hurts in April and May, while everyone else is in summer mode

  10. The CPC still consistently showing well below normal temps and above normal precip for the first 10 days of May. It should warm up “permanently” by Memorial Day Weekend…it always does.

    1. Ditto for Dorchester as well. In fact, Todd said that the sea breeze has now penetrated further inland. I guess no “six o’clock” jump?…….lol.

  11. Amazing temperature difference across SNE today where you go from some 80s to highs struggling to reach 50. While our weather will remain quiet tonight and tomorrow other parts of the country will not be so lucky so please keep a good thought for those folks dealing with tornadoes and flooding.

  12. The cool ocean waters to me stink in the spring because its provides that chill with the wind coming off the cool ocean waters but its great in the summer because it provides some relief from the heat and humidity.

  13. I hate to keep posting but it’s amazing. We are at hopkinton high school and it’s 55. I called daughter in uxbridge. It’s still 75 there A 20 degree change in about 15 miles

  14. Vicki its okay to keep posting because I will be doing the same when thunderstorms and snowstorms threaten. These temperature differences interest me and it is amazing as you pointed out what a difference in temperature there is from one location to another.

  15. You all can post as much as you want. At least it’s valuable or interesting info for most people reading. 🙂

  16. It was neat watching the low clouds first have trouble getting all the way across the sky here (spent alot of time with partial clearing hanging on in the western part of the sky while to the east, especially SE toward Boston the stratus was more solid). Finally saw the orangy clearing line vanish over the WSW horizon during the last 30 minutes at Woburn.

  17. Thanks everyone. I’m on the deck just because even though it’s 50 in Framingham. Jimmyjames I’ll b doing the same for T storms. I love them

I don’t know if anyone watches the eagle cam in Norfolk VA. The pair had been together 9 years and is raising three eaglets born mid march. The female was struck by a plane and killed today. The dad came back for the first time just now to feed them. I’m heartsick. I’ve watched them every day

    1. Vicki, sorry to hear that about the mother. Hopefully the father will continue to feed the chicks until they are able to be on their own. 🙁

    1. Charlie, how about opening your pool on Memorial Day? I always have my first BBQ on that day to “kick off” the summer season. 🙂

  18. Got to love April / May – 77 in North Adams 46 in Beverly at 8pm.

Sorry to have been gone so long. Work has been very busy….

  19. Let’s talk bruins!! Awful power play, just downright ugly. Three in a row, come on for crying out loud at least get a decent shot off!!!!!!!!

Nothing to report weather wise except it’s still nasty out:)

  20. How about the weather own south!! Wow some nasty looking storms, tornado warning all over the place.

    1. Its not a good situation down south tonight and tomorrow with EXTREME Level activity using the 1-4 thunderstorm index. looks like another day for tornadoes across parts of the south. That cold front thankfully when it gets here should weaken but I would not rule out some places especially west of the CT River Valley to see some strong storms on Thursday.

  21. Let us hope the Bruins can break their “Game 7” jinx tomorrow night. Otherwise, say good-bye to Claude Julien for sure.

  22. With all due respect to the south tonight, there are also some pretty bad t-storms in NYS and PA as well. Are these for us come Thursday?

  23. Philip I agree with you if the Bruins don’t win tomorrow night Claude Julien might very well be coaching his final game.
With the Celtics to me its going to be a great series with the Heat of course you should never assume anything since they still have not advanced but I would be shocked if they blow a 3-0 series lead against the Sixers.

  24. Philip there is still severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning in upstate NY where the severe thunderstorm watch expired at 9pm. In fact those areas getting hit tonight are in the slight risk area for severe weather again tomorrow as the cold front pushes eastward. Our day for thunderstorms will be Thursday and hopefully the front will weaken some but as I said earlier don’t be surprised if strong storms pop up in SNE and I am favoring CT River Valley west at the moment.
