Independence Day Weekend Forecast!

5:26PM

Well, it is upon us. The 2nd holiday weekend of the summer, or the big 4th of July weekend. Even when July 4th is in the middle of the week, we find a way to make a weekend out of it. But this year, it’s a Monday, connected to a weekend, so we don’t face such a major problem now, do we… In fact, since July 1st is a Friday and touches a weekend, we may as well just make it a 4-day weekend! Or even further, if you’re lucky enough to have vacation time, like myself, your weekend is going to be longer than 4 days, perhaps 10? Mine is. 🙂

Anyway, on to the weather. A pool of chilly air aloft has promoted the development of some clouds today, but other than a few sprinkles in the hills well northwest of Boston, it’s been a dry day. As this cool pool exits very slowly Friday, it will still be close enough to allow some clouds to pop up again during the day, with a slight chance of a few showers. High pressure will build along the East Coast over the weekend, allowing warmer and more humid air to flow into New England. But a cold front approaching from the west may set off a few showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. For the holiday itself, Monday, high pressure will dominate with dry and warm weather! A fairly normal July pattern is expected for the balance of next week.

Boston area forecast…

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy early. Mostly clear late. Low ranging from the lower 50s over inland valley locations to the lower 60s in the urban centers. Wind W 5 to 15 mph.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. High in the middle 80s. Wind W to SW 5 to 15 mph.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low in the upper 60s. Wind SW 5 to 10 mph.

  1. Good evening everyone! Can anyone sort of predict the weather between here and Winnepesaukee (sp?) for Sat morning and Monday morning. My son is heading up there and wants to ride his motorcycle but he has to be back by noon Monday to go to work at 3:00. There’s no give on that. He is trying to decide if it’s better to just use my car to be safe.

    Thanks a lot!

  2. Thunderstorm Index at 1 tomorrow since I don’t think there will be severe weather and I am going to go with a 1 for Sunday right now. I am happy the Farmers’ Almanac will be wrong from July 1st-3rd since we will not have violent thunderstorms like they predicted but if there are thunderstorms I will have to give them some credit.

    1. Yes Jimmy, the Farmers Almanac has its issues to say the least but I guess they did have the right idea since “thunderstorms” are in Sunday’s forecast. A cold front with humid air ahead of it…who knows, things might change and you might have to “up” your scale a notch. There might be that “one” town that receives an isolated severe storm. Hope it doesn’t happen, of course.

The FA always brags about their 80% accuracy rate…probably more “luck” than any serious forecasting tools.

  3. I don’t buy the 80% accuraccy. I think its more in the 20%-25% range. On June 1st when tornadoes struck they were calling for fair and warm from June 1st-3rd.

  4. Happy Canada Day…..Good beach day yesterday, a nice mix of sunshine and shade providing cumulus clouds. Its been interesting to watch the ocean temps, which have been reporting mid to upper 60s last few days. That must be lurking just offshore, because I’m guessing it was more like 55F to maybe 60F yesterday. Maybe more beach time Saturday, errands abound today and I’m understanding more clouds and maybe popup showers today. Have a good day everyone, good luck to anyone who has to travel later today.

  5. It looks like we will be heading to the South Shore this wknd. – namely, Hull. My husband comes from Hull, so we like to drive by where he used to live (along the bay area – if the visibility is good, great view of Boston in the distance). My family originally came from South Shore, too – so I have many fond memories of Nantasket Beach and the bay. Also, we like to go by his old high school and walk along the beach area there. We haven’t been there in about 2 years – I hope we can still walk around the boat dock there. Nice views all around there. We will probably go on Sat. but will try to leave early to get ahead of some crowds.

Going to enjoy the refreshing day today as it looks like the heat and humidity will be around for awhile – as it should be in summer!

Have a Happy July 4th everyone!

    1. rainshine – what a great trip. I also like Hull and have wonderful memories of Nantasket Beach. My friends and I would drive down several nights a week when I was a teenager to go to Paragon Park. Sounds as if you will have a perfect weekend for your trip!

  6. Storm Prediction Center has us in the general risk area for thunderstorms on Sunday. The GFS has us unstable so will see what happens and if it looks like a severe weather threat will happen the thunderstorm index from yesterday might have to go up to a 2. This is by no means a washout so don’t cancel plans but if the skies look threatening head indoors. Saturday and Monday of the 3 day holiday weekend look great!

    1. I have 10 free days starting today, with lots of fun things planned. This morning was a nice morning to mow the lawn, so that’s done and takes care of the outside work. I put today as errand day, tomorrow I’m having a water fight & cookout and going to fireworks in Acton in the evening – weather looks great! Sunday, fireworks in Danvers which would be Tuesday if they got postponed. So I don’t mind the weather being “iffy”. I’m free to chase any storms. 🙂 Monday, I’ll be in Boston on the banks of the Charles from just after sunrise to when the party is over, except for a few hours heading into the North End for pizza mid afternoon! I love that day, been doing it since 1990! Weather looks decent too, just have to watch for a possible isolated shower or storm in lingering instability, but I’m not that worried about it.
