DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 24-28)
A long stretch of unsettled weather gets underway today with the approach of a warm front. This front pushes through part of the region by this evening into the early hours of Saturday before heading back to the south with a push from high pressure in eastern Canada. It will then spend much of the weekend and early next week just south of New England as low pressure disturbances run along it.
TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered light snow/sleet/rain mainly midday and afternoon. Highs 38-45. Wind SE 5-15 MPH increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Temperatures steady 38-45. Wind S 10-20 MPH.
SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance of light rain. Highs 45-53 early, then cooler in the afternoon. Wind SW 5-15 MPH morning, shifting to NE from north to south during the day.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Lows 30-38. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain/mix/snow mainly afternoon. Highs 38-45. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain/mix likely. Lows 33-40. Highs 40-47.
TUESDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain possible. Lows 33-40. Highs 40-47.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 29-APRIL 2)
Unsettled weather continues episodes of rain/mix/snow possible, especially March 29 and again near the end of the period. Temperatures below normal.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 3-7)
No big changes expected here as an overall unsettled weather and below normal temperature regime continues.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK as always.

I have one thing good to say about today….It’s Friday. 😀

    1. Composite Radar (all radar elevations combined) shows it snowing over Boston, however, it is NOT reaching the ground.

0.50 Degree elevation shows snow about 20-30 miles N&W of the City.

  2. Early sun no surprise. May even see a bit before it sets today. That’s why my forecast says “mostly cloudy” versus “overcast”.

Very light snow in Reading at this time.

    1. We seem to be affected by some sort of Charlie Hole. 😀

Heading out in a few. Will let you know.

  3. This weather is why spring high school sports seasons are such a nightmare in New England. Feel badly for the coaches, as it takes forever for the grass fields to be playable. Thankfully lots of schools have turf now, so lacrosse can usually get underway on time, but most baseball fields are still grass. Our kids in all springs sports have been practicing in the gym and hallways of our high school for most of the week! 🙂

  4. A tweet so folks can just remember that this can happen.

Can it snow at 40 degrees?
    yes
Will it snow in Boston at 40 right now?
    definitely maybe

  5. My wife is on the road right now driving from Manchester NH to Worcester…said she’s in a snowstorm LOL…of course she didn’t tell me where exactly she was

  6. I think we had some wet snow flakes at the start, now its misty, raw etc ……

63 days til the official arrival of spring in New England (Start of Memorial Day weekend) and even then, I’ve recalled a chilly one or 2 of them.

  7. Snowing and raining where I am in Chinatown. Very fast-moving `spring’ flakes that dart by my window. Some rain is mixed in.

Thank you for the forecast, TK. Hope you’re feeling well.

  8. btw, when it first started, my car was showing 42 and it was snowing. 😀

By the time I got back to work it was between 36 and 37.

    1. FWIW, the highest temperature for which I have seen it snowing
was 43. Have also seen it sleet at 50 Degrees in April. 😀

      1. I don’t see the need for that John. Based on radar, no more precip in western MA, NYS, NJ or PA.

  9. Lowell area to northeastern MA had a period of very heavy snow in the last hour with nearly zero visibility in a few locations, due to a mid level instability burst and just enough cold air to pull down from above.

  10. When I drove to Westboro, it was 39 and snowing enough to VERY lightly dust the road. It was quite intense for a while but a snow shower as TK had said.

On the way home it was 37 and raining. Go figure.

Clearly, predicting (or guessing) based on temperature alone doesn’t work!

It was also snowing in Boston where my son works. Toward Museum of Science area.

  11. Warmest temp I ever observed snow at is 51 in 1981. There are a lot of people who think it has to be 32 or below at the surface to snow. Not true whatsoever. Need to look at the entire atmosphere from surface to precipitation growth area.

    1. Thank you!!!

You got me placed in a time out by not one but two graandchilden. I was talking with my daughter about Dr Stupids posts of forecasts from various stations. I’m not allowed to say Stupid.

Thank you. The rule is one minute timeout for each year of age. I get over an hour of relaxation 😉

          1. I really need to add that I’m teasing. They did put me in a TO for an hour but after about five minutes they were back to play. I do love time with my grands

  12. Some fairly dreary times ahead. Looking better in about 7 days for more seasonal temperatures and brighter skies.

  13. I sure am hoping for dry weekends again for April & may as I was just awarded my 8th job of the spring to date with more estimates lined up this weekend .And my regular customers from last season also want work done as well.

    1. The Yards here all melted now but still some good snow piles in some lots Hadi. The ground is super soft so I can do clean- ups next weekend if dry.

      1. The landscape especially as far as snow piles, you would think we had a 2+foot snowfall awhile back as opposed to a barely 6-inch one. This snow is hard to melt.

          1. There is at least one street in my neighborhood whose sidewalk is still literally impassable on the shady side. Piles everywhere.

  14. Good morning folks. On the back-up account for a while with some maintenance on going this morning, therefore the official new post will be delayed until sometime around noon, though as of now I’m not making any significant changes.

This weekend’s forecast is the same, with patches of rain (outside risk icing/mix) but largely precipitation-free. The most widespread precipitation comes as mainly rain Monday but temps will be MARGINAL so do not rule out a flip to snow in some locations if heavy enough.

Unsettled through Tuesday. Sun may make appearance Wednesday. Thursday-Friday currently look dry and cool to end March.

First 10 days of April look cool to cold and unsettled with at least 3 rain/snow threats. Until we get rid of the tendency to put large high pressure areas in Canada that sit around, this pattern doesn’t change.

We still have about 75% of the unpaved ground covered in at least 1 inch of snow around here in my area, more to the north, less to the south.

You know the rule: NEVER rule out snow through April here. If you do, you have no business forecasting the weather because you know nothing about meteorology. This rule applies to meteorologists too.

    Good day all. 🙂

    1. I’m ruling out any chance Snow has of having a comeback in April. He only had one hit with “Informer” and if he hasn’t had a hit in over twenty years since, I don’t know how you can hold out hope he will make a comeback in April. 😉

  15. Thanks TK. A very interesting pattern. Unsettled, but not particularly wet. In fact, precip totals for most of SNE in the next 7 days are likely to be near average if you believe the GFS, or below average if you believe the Euro. Definitely on the cool side.

I’ve been home in Wrentham this week on spring break, but a friend of mine who stayed up at school for skiing told me they had almost half a foot of snow in Plymouth, NH yesterday. Much more than expected. This stretch of weather is playing out a lot like I thought, with mainly wet outcomes in SNE but some snow/mix chances to the north. I think that theme continues for weeks to come. I still don’t think we get the right combination of cold and a disturbance to produce meaningful snow for SNE, but TK is certainly correct with his warning about discounting the possibility.

  16. Thanks TK for the interim post

My food shopping is complete so I’m ready for the storm ;). Any storm

I pick up my new glasses this am. They are transition lenses which I had years ago and didn’t like because they didn’t get dark in the car. They tell me these will. Unfortunately, it seems I’ll have quite a while before I can test them

    1. My latest transition lenses from December don’t get dark in the car, they told me the UV protection in the car glass now stops the activation of the transition lenses… maybe there is a different brand available that is based on a different wavelength of light….

      1. Thank you….I am a bit doubtful also but they better as I paid more for the option. Sadly, I won’t know for a bit. I guarantee I will not be happy if they do not. I discussed it at length.

  17. Good morning.

Up to 43 here. It was nice to see some melting going on all night. We are fast approaching April and I would like to see the last remains of this snow GONE!

Red Sox home opener is only 9 days away. 9 days!! I can’t believe it.

Looooong range calls for decent weather, but we know how that can change
    around here. 😀

    1. I believe Philip asked why this last snow lasted so long and I responded by
saying it was high water content, which is true and ultimately the reason.
however, there is a tad more to that.

The high water content snow means that there is LESS air between the individual snow flakes such that the snow is more compacted. When it gets above 32 and some melting takes place, since the snow is so compact, the effect of melting an individual snow flake is far less than that of powder snow. There is mostly air in the powder snow. The end result is that the high water content snow just takes longer to melt.

It seems to be taking forever this go around. 😀

        1. Yes, Thanks again JPD! Come to think of it, that fluffy ton of snow we had back in 2015 did actually melt fairly quickly once the persistent snow events stopped and the temps moderated.

          1. It must have depended on location. I have dated photos of a reindeer who got stuck under the snow. It’s tail was visible March 10 and if was pretty much completely visible by March 26 but there was still solid snow cover on the lawn. That was all SSW facing

  18. Barry has 64F for Tuesday but the coast including Boston will only be 48F…darn!

I guess my outerwear will remain the same on that day as most early springs around here (knit hat, heavy coat, and gloves). 😉

    1. I’m glad I stuck with my 40s (maybe 50s south) for today when the TV guys were going 60+. 🙂

  19. Vicki…I noticed your post about the transition lenses. I have the super-de-duper ones and I really like them. They’re all I use–driving, the beach, etc. I mean, when the sun is right smack in my eyes, it’s not wonderful but the rest of the time they’re good. The only thing is that they take a little longer to lighten up when you go inside, and that can be inconvenient because I think everything is all dark and it’s not. Anyway, I hope you like yours!

  20. Starting to accumulate on the grass, cars, and wood surfaces….was not expecting this, but a nice surprise as I can’t stand cold rain
