Update on Extreme Cold & Storm Threat

1045pm

Hi everyone! Just a couple quick updates.

First, the most recent 3 runs of the NAM (short range model) are supporting my idea of a storm track further offshore and less of a chance of a major impact. I still feel that it will be close enough to bring some threat of snow/mix to part of southeastern New England, but we’ll fine tune that as soon as possible.

More importantly, an extremely cold night is underway and will lead to a very cold Monday. The NWS Boston has issued wind chill warnings & advisories for the area. Bottom line is, if you plan on spending any time outside through Monday evening, bundle up, because the risk of frostbite is real, and can occur in as little as 10 minutes if you are not properly protected! So be safe out there!

  1. So in other words, an easy-to-read forecast for the week ahead. Understanding, this would be for eastern MA mainly Metro Boston where the majority of readers are at the moment. But I know you’re from that area anyway!

    1. We get 2 shots through midweek. Up to 1 inch early Tuesday, and then whatever falls with the bigger storm Wednesday night into Thursday. I still don’t see that as big as some of the other met’s do. Want to call for 4 to 7 right now.

  2. What are your thoughts on the latest EURO? As of 2pm, it seems to be pushing a bit westward indicating quite a bit of snow north and west of Boston and likely mixing on the Cape and South Shore.

I could well be wrong; I’m really new to this! Just learning what I can to satisfy my curiosity and fulfill a hobby.

    1. Christie… Sorry it too so long to get back to you. As much as I love the Euro, I think this time it may be too far north and too wet with this setup. I’ve been drawn to the idea of the NAM over the past several runs, for reasons stated in my recent blog. I’ve found it very difficult to come off this idea, based on seeing this setup in the past, including a few times last winter.

Time will tell of course, but I can’t buy into the big amounts being advertised on the Boston stations at this point. I know it’s risky doing this, because I have underestimated both of the big storms we’ve had. But I have to go with what I feel…

Have you ever taken any classes in meteorology or is it strictly a hobby?

      1. I took one class over at UMASS Amherst a couple years back, but I didn’t learn anything about forecasting. So really it’s just a hobby and I’m picking up what I can as I go along. Thanks for responding!

        1. You’re welcome. Always love to see when people have it as a hobby. I hope you remain a frequent reader and contributor of this blog!
