Sunday Forecast

8:24AM

DAYS 1-5 (MARCH 24-28)
Quick update this morning. High pressure southwest of the region delivers milder air today. A cold front drops through from north to south early Monday returning cold air to the region early in the week, with a slow recovery in temperatures beginning during midweek as high pressure from Canada sinks slowly southward through the period and keeps it dry. Forecast details…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 48-55 Cape Cod and immediate South Coast, 55-62 elsewhere. Wind W 5-15 MPH with gusts 20-30 MPH.
TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows 37-44. Wind W 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy start with a slight risk of brief light rain. Clearing north to south mid morning on. Sunny afternoon. Highs 45-52 early then falling back through the 40s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.
MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 38-45. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32. Wind light N.
WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 45-50 coast, 50-55 interior. Wind light E.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 27-34. Wind light SE.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 48-55 except 55-62 interior valleys. Wind light S.

DAYS 6-10 (MARCH 29-APRIL 2)
High pressure southeast of the region will result in above to much above normal temperatures March 29-31 based on current expecting timing of the next front from the west. Ocean-influenced areas will obviously have modified temperatures. It should turn much cooler and somewhat unsettled in the first couple days of April with a front moving through and low pressure moving in. Too early for details on that.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 3-7)
Cooler weather for the early days of April with a couple periods of unsettled weather likely.

  1. Thanks TK. Looking forward to the warmth next weekend but today is going to feel nice out there as well!

      1. I love looking At this near or at the end of the season.
Pretty interesting and shows what an inexact science the
longer range forecasts are, most especially for snowfall.

        Thank you for keeping this.

  2. Thanks all.

You know, I don’t think it is all a snow disparity. I think some of it is due to
the timing of the Logan measurements where snow had melted/compacted in some instances prior to the “official” Logan measurement. In some cases it was genuinely more snow here than at the airport, but I think the overall disparity should have
been something like 7-9 inches and not 13+. Logan’s real total is probably something like 32 inches or so.

Just my thoughts for what’s it’s worth.

And what a Beautiful morning it is!! 🙂

  3. Thank you TK. Awesome day for a long overdue 10th birthday party. Looks as if my week mostly work free will be great also.

  4. Thanks TK!

In terms of the Logan/JP snow disparity (and btw, I’ve really enjoyed following that!), most of the disparity can be traced to two events. All the others are just nickles and dimes that all seem pretty reasonable given Logan’s seaside location. But the Logan measurement on the November 15 event is a joke, and the 1/19-1/20 event seems very fishy also. I strongly suspect there was a major review in procedures for the observer(s) at Logan following that 1/19-1/20 event which has led to better numbers since. But it’s unfortunate that we won’t have accurate measurements for those two storms. Combined, we’re probably missing a good 5″ worth of snow. It may be worth the NWS actually adjusting those two events to be more representative.

  5. Today is exactly the kind of day I talk about this time of year where, in areas without snow on the ground, temperatures should exceed the forecasts.

We are stair-stepping our way into the very warm spring that we’re going to have. We’ll step down again the next couple days. But late week and next weekend, get the pools open and the beach chairs out 🙂

    1. Only to maybe pull out the winter coats one or 2 days in April when we get one sneaky cold air mass and a wave of low pressure with the final mix/snow of the season? 😉

      1. I would be curious as to the odds of snow in any given April around here. I would assume well under a 50% chance?

            1. I recall getting snow in most all of the Aprils. may not have been much, but snow in there almost all of them.

  6. Barry has laryngitis. I assume that was why he was off air for awhile? I hope he’ll be ok.

Barry always seem so…healthy, and then some. 🙂

    1. Barry is a very healthy guy, and in incredibly good shape! But he did get nailed pretty good by a bug recently. He’ll be fine. 🙂

  7. It would have been interesting to have measured the difference in snowfall between Logan and the neighborhoods back in 2015. I would think that there was little or maybe no variance at all? Even Logan’s suspicious measurements couldn’t have overcome all that amount of snowfall (110.6”), I don’t believe. I don’t recall any mix events even there.

    1. Going left to right, top to bottomL

      Bill Hovey, Bob Copleland
      Dick Albert, Mark Rosenthal
      Barry Burbank, Don Kent

GREAT SHOT and thanks for sharing!!!

      1. I wouldn’t have recognized Bill Hovey. I seem to remember him as a teeny bit older gentleman. The others no problem.

Were YOU the photographer TK? 😉

      1. My brother and I are explores. Most people stayed on north peak even when Barker peak opened. These trails came off of a green trail called 3 mile, so while the rest of the crowd went straight on blues and blacks and most of the beginners stayed on North peak, we went on 3 mile (green trail) and connected to very nice nearly untouched blues for most of the day once we found them. we even got some nice ski skiing in in one of the glades which was nearly untouched as well. It was a hard packed groomers so we were zipping.

  8. Tropical Storm Iba has formed in the South Atlantic. As you know, because of the make-up of the basin and the most common weather patterns there, tropical cyclones are rare in the South Atlantic. This is the first one since 2010. Most guidance did a fair to good job predicting this system’s formation.

  9. 12z GFS says “I’ll tease you with spring then it’s back to winter for a while!” 😉

    1. So sorry to see such a great talent retire but….He made a wise decision. We knew it was coming and it makes me so very happy he ended his career as he began….as one of the greats

  10. By the way, Vicki…

Things have been so busy lately, I haven’t had time to tell you that I used your question from last week about the first number to be spelled with an “A” as one of my bonus questions on one of my quizzes.

Most got it correct!!! I did have the following answers, too:

    “A hundred”; “A half”… 🙂
I had to gently remind my students that “Ah” is NOT a number!!! 🙂

      1. Is the word negative part of the number name …..or is positive? And seriously….it’s way too late to think 😉

Id like your address….Just in case my grand comes back with this !

    1. Only made it to about 52F here today with a fair amount of cloud cover. Made it though today with a decent amount of snow still left on the ground, especially in shaded and wooded areas

      1. We were up to 58 but unless you were in the sun it didn’t feel 58. Not complaining as it was an awesome day. Just shows how relative temperatures are

  11. I think it was Mark (I am apologize if it was another poster) who shared some retro TWC videos recently. Thanks for that! TK posted a great photo of “old-tyme” Boston mets which made me remember this 1985 video of Hurricane Gloria coverage (audio and video out of synch) with Paul Cousins, Jack and Liz, Harvey Leonard and, if you go all the way to the end (31:25), a quick snippet of TWC hurricane expert, John Hope.

  12. Captain. Just txtd my 10 year old grand the question. She wanted to know if she could use safari….now that she can’t, she is thinking. If I keep her awake all night ill be in doghouse with her mom

    1. That’s awesome. I have hiked Greylock before but never skiied it. I’ll need to add that to my bucket list!

    2. I honestly did not know they allowed back country skiing there!! I have done some back country in upstate NY but not in Mass, honestly thought it was illegal in mass.
